I don't think a 2nd baseman needs to be super athletic to survive in the big leagues. As long as his contact is there and his defense is passable I don't think that people here would complain.

Yep. He just needs to make the plays that are hit at him and make good contact. That's the expectation. He doesn't need to be a superstar nor does anyone expect that.
