KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 I think Izturis has potential to not completely suck. That's it in a nutshell. No one would advocate signing Izturis to anything more than a MiLB deal if he were a free agent but that's neither here nor there. He is signed and he might not completely suck. There's not need to write him off but there's reason to be very grateful that Travis was brought in to be another (potentially much better) option.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 I'm sure Izturis got hazed for it all last season. ball players would never let something like that "slide" you could put in a ramp at his locker so he doesn't hurt himself again. I highly doubt he got hazed or bugged about a season ending injury by anyone. Those guys know exactly how much work they put into getting ready for each season, and would probably have varying degrees of sympathy for him. Only a guy like Pierzynski would use a season ending injury as a platform to make fun of someone.

Gibby laughed because it's still funny. falling up the stairs is funny and if you can't understand that you wont understand why he would get hazed. try EBAY for a sense of humor.

Maybe they thought it was hilarious at first but losing him for the whole season after a surpisingly decent start was pretty s***** for both him and the team.

If it had been a sprained ankle he might have caught some s*** for it. But when it's a season ending injury, guys feel for you.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 I guess I just don't find the humor in injuries. Just because Izturis is s***, doesn't mean he should be publicly laughed at for something out of his control. If Jose Bautista had done the same thing, Gibby would not have laughed hysterically about it in front of season ticket holders. I love Gibby, but that seemed unnecessary.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 I am almost rooting for ARod to do just this The only way I'd be rooting for this is if he sucks s*** with the Yankees, gets released then comes here to play for the Jays for league minimum. Imagine if that did happen and he could hit anywhere near his career norm...the infield defense would be suspect but holy s*** that lineup would be stacked.

JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 I'm sure he gets a look (maybe a little longer than someone in his position would) because of his guaranteed contract, but I think (hope) they go with the best candidate for the starting job whomever it might be. He might not be bad for a back up role, and might wind up there due to the fact they're paying him $3M, but there's a chance they could always cut him lose or try sending him to some team desperate for depth. He could put up an OK (and by OK that means marginally better than what he's done for this team since signing which isn't hard to top since he missed a year) year or winds up released if they opt to go with someone else. Personally, after his season two years ago, missing a year with a serious knee injury, and not knowing what, if anything, can be expected from him, he's on the outside looking in. But this team seems to have a habit of taking players out of options or who are owed money over better players so we'll see. Maybe they'll give him a month to see what he can do either as the starter or a back up before letting him go, or shoving him to the bench if Travis is ready. If he can field adequately and hit at least for a few weeks in ST and the season he might stick long enough until the back and forth begins again.

If Izturis is the backup then you'd better have a starting 2B than can slide to SS. If we're talking about Izturis backing up a 2B only player like Travis then I'd rather just kick him to the curb and run with someone like Goins or Ramon Santiago as the backup. Izturis just doesn't have the defensive versatility that he had back in his Angels days and he doesn't have a strong enough platoon split to make him an attractive pinch hitting option either. He's not a good hitter, he's not a defensive specialist. At his best, he can be not entirely terrible on both sides of the ball and provide just enough value to keep a job as essentially Travis' placeholder.

Especially coming off his knee injury, an odd one, we have no idea what to expect. Someone has to back up SS if not for the sole reason of having a back up (we know Reyes will need a day off or extra innings or some reason) so who knows if he can even play 2nd and if he can't hold his own there no point in trying him at SS. Might as well run me out there. It's one reason why Goins, despite the lack of a bat, seems alluring since he can play both spots. If his range is an issue might as well cut him lose before the end of ST and just move on.

I'm not in the least bit concerned about being made fun of. I'm assuming this is where you expect someone more witty than yourself to step in? Sorry that I don't buy that Iztruis' teammates were making fun of him after suffering a freaky season ending injury. I'm sure Jose Fernandez couldn't contain his laughter when Stanton got drilled.

The fact that you're of the belief that Izturis' injury was any more freak than Stanton's is considerably more concerning. Both injuries were out of said player's control. One gets mocked, one doesn't. One is a superstar, one is a bench player. See the correlation?

See the correlation? yes, you were bullied as a child and still haven't gotten over it. Stanton was hit by a ball thrown by someone else, Izturis fell up the stairs.... do I really have to show you hours of Chaplin or 3 Stooges footage to show why you're ridiculous. I already wrote that it wouldn't have been made fun of if it was life threatening. Stanton was a superstar before and after, Izturis was a utility fringe player and was never going to be a superstar.... A man with a broken arm asks his doctor how long until he can play the piano. the doctor replies that he should be able to play in a few weeks. The man smiles and says, GREAT... I've always wanted to play the piano. at this point you are either going out of your way to be argumentative or you're a simpleton with a complete lack of humor. I'd laugh at myself if I fell up the f***ing stairs. You take yourself and this conversation way too seriously. Either way the discussion is over.

There is no team that I have ever been on that wouldn't eventually tease a guy for injuring himself this way. There is a difference between laughing at somebody immediately when it happens, and teasing a guy later. This is sports and there is no way Izturis would be butthurt if the guys on the team poked a bit of fun at the situation after the fact. Obviously you''d wait a bit, but come on. Your teammate can still tell you don't want them to be injured and wish they were playing even if you tease them.

I'd bet that Izturis has laughed about it himself. of course no one is laughing at the accident or the injury. they are laughing at the situation.

jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 I don't really have an opinion on this. Like...if someone at my work fell down the stairs and missed time because they broke their arm or whatever i don't think i would be cracking jokes when they got back. At the same time i'm sure as athletes a few guys may crack jokes after the fact once he's healthy and playing. I guess it depends on the relationship they have with Izzy. This is their profession and livelihood so it's not really something to make fun of but at the same time their are a million different personalities who play ball. So who the f*** knows. Really who gives a s*** though. I hope Izzy is somewhat productive and can be passable for a few months until Travis comes up.

I remember an article where a couple players had bet a clubhouse attendant teenager that he couldn't drink a whole gallon of milk without throwing up.
