Is there a convincing argument that Leake is better than Estrada? I don't see one.

He's 4 years younger?? I dunno

Leake throws it harder, gets more ground balls, throws more innings. and projection systems have him as being better. Leake is 28yo and Estrada is 32yo.

I think Leake might be only slightly better and younger but for the price it does not make any sense.

In the last 3 years, which pitcher has provided more WAR and is younger?

That's exactly it. People forget that you don't get paid in FA for what you are going to do you get paid for what you've already accomplished. And Leake has been better despite being younger.

I just don't get it. He is not going to more then a 2 WAR player and he is getting 5/80.....

No wonder Boras is looking for 5 years for Chen

He's probably gonna get it in this market

Smart front offices like the Cardinals usually avoid doing this though

Bad ones like the Phillies did it all the time

I don't really see Leake's age as a positive over Estrada. If Estrada being older is the difference between a 2-year deal and a 5-year deal, I'll take the older guy. You don't want to be locked into a back end starter for 5 years.

Smart org make dumb choices here and there. Let find out their reasoning before we kill them for it. They deserve that.

It's just the way FA works but I'd agree that good FO's avoid bad deals especially long ones. I don't mind the AAV; $8M per win (and have a team friendly option at the end) seems about right but 5yrs is a too much for a mid-rotation pitcher.

Agreed, they should put up similar numbers and flexibility in a couple years > then a few extra innings.

Same org that traded a top 10 CF for BP junk!

leake had discussions with teams about doing 3 yr-deal at $20M per w/opt-outs after each year before agreeing to 80/5

It's perplexing that a team would be willing to commit 20 mil to a pitcher who hasn't been worth that amount a single time in his entire 6 year career and had his worst full season K and BB rates in 2015.

Not everyone hates it

Seriously though

I'd rather sign Cueto for that AAV and more years

Would you take Leake over Estrada/Happ/Dickey?

Contracts considered? No. Ignoring contracts I'd take him over Dickey.

Not without giving it some serious thought. I can see an argument either way and I'd bet at least one of them is better in 2016.

I wouldn't. The floors are similar but the ceilings and value lie with our 3. Leake over Dickey without contracts in the reasoning though.

And, um, won the World Series that year

(NB - I know you were being sarcastic)

Wonder if this means Buehrle is going to retire. I thought he would sign with the Cardinals for like 1/10 leaving both sides very happy.

I thought he'd already decided he was retiring for sure
