King Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Cards flame thrower prospect Alex Reyes suspended 50 games for weed Top Cardinals prospect Alex Reyes has been given a 50-game suspension after testing positive for marijuana, according to a team release (h/t to MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez, via Twitter). Reyes, who had been pitching in the Arizona Fall League, expressed regret at his own “inappropriate behavior.” Reyes, a 6’3 righty, has streaked up prospect boards and now rates as a consensus top-20 youngster league-wide. His AFL stint is now over, but because he was a member of that league he’ll be able to accumulate some time served in the offseason. From a developmental perspective, the suspension is not likely to cause much of an interruption. The 21-year-old had ascended to Double-A last year, but likely was set to spend more time in the minors both to finish his polishing and to build up innings on his arm (which, presumably, is why he was working in the AFL). And whatever one thinks about marijuana use, or the merits of the league testing/suspending players for its use, the drug is obviously less harmful and concerning than other banned substances. Still, the suspension is obviously not preferable for Reyes or the St. Louis organization. He has shown enough pure stuff — with a big fastball and plus curve — that he could conceivably factor into the club’s plans this year (more likely at the end than the start). With a need to refine his third pitch (a changeup) and hone his command, perMLB.com, the lost opportunity to play early in the season probably could have an impact on his timeline.

What a stupid rule.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 They treat weed like steroids or cocaine in the minor leagues, but nobody on the MLB 40 man roster can be suspended for pot. The hypocrisy is amazing.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 What a stupid rule. I think the stupidity is pretty evenly split between the player and the rule.
King Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Because he was suspended while on an AFL team - the rest of the AFL season will count towards his suspension. So he only has to serve ~40 games next season.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 How many MLB players smoke weed like 10-15%? I don't get how you can suspend minor leaguers for it yet not guys on the 40 man roster.

Nafro Verified Member Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 At least he's in the AFL, so 10 games will count this year. Pretty sad that Chris Davis can get Adderall prescribed to "focus". Yet smoking weed ends up costing someone 50 games. It is his second positive I guess. Eventually hopefully pro sports and America/Canada in general re-assess their modern day prohibition.

I just s*** on him for passing O's fan whom I can call hypocrites/piss off. For sure Davis' reasons are legit and I think its a little redonk the leage rejected adderall for him the year before.
Nafro Verified Member Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 What is it that you think Adderall "does" exactly? Its a stimulant used to treat ADD and ADHD. Its an amphetamine. I think it is used basically as legal speed. I think it would help you turn on a fastball. I think it would improve your hand eye coordination ever so slightly. (The difference between missing a pitch by a fraction of an inch: deep fly balls become home runs) I think if you had trouble paying attention in class they would feed it to you to help you "pay attention" and quit being a distraction. I think the year you didn't get your exemption to take it you would have an ISO of 0.209,and than take it anyway because you saw the difference it made, so you got suspended. I think the year before that and the year after that when you took it your ISO would be 50 percent more (>0.3). I think there is no such thing as legit ADHD. I think every intelligent person could be diagnosed with ADHD.
