I know we talk about salary restraint for payroll, but let's look at our books going forward (coming off):

2015 - Buehrle: $19M, Dickey: $12M (assuming they don't pick up his option), Navarro: $5M, Romero: $8.1M, Thole: $1.75, Izturis: $4M,

2016 - Batista: $14M, Encarnation: $14M (we probably pickup both options though)

2018 - Reyes: $23M

Look how much bleeping money is coming off after this year!! Then we have guys on arb cases going forward (Donaldson), guys on rookie contracts (Stroman), other guys we probably just roll another 1 year deal on... Plus we have a decent farm system so really - if you want to leave even more flexibility for guys to come up from the farm and fill out this roster then a contract like a Rickie Weeks or a John Axford on a 1 year won't kill us! Protect your depth! It makes too much sense not to even increase the payroll heaven forbid for 1 year to $145 - $150 million in 2015 because you know you're going to have so much room going forward, and at the same time - short term gain of making a serious run at contention! And not just hoping for health or guys stepping up.

Zero chance the Jays spend $150 mil on salary, I'd love for the Jays to get Axford and Evereth Cabrera who would both be reasonable but even that seems like it would take a miracle at this point.

I threw out $150 but our payroll is still sitting below what we spent 2014. We can creep up to 140-145 and not collapse Rogers.

We're less than 120mil right now but apparently there's only 6mil left to spend, actually Sportsnet & AA will now be claiming 3mil after factoring Bellisario & Santiago possibly making the team out of spring training.

We were around 123-125M (depending on what happens with Donaldson and Valencia) before the Belisario signing.

I think it's a bit lower but for arguments sake let's say it is 125M, how does it still boil down to having 6M left?

It's not lower. You're not counting the 5M or so that they'll have to spend on league-min guys (like Stroman).

And it boils down to 6M because that's just how much ownership wants to spend. It kinda f***ing sucks, but you can't do anything about it.

Hopefully there's a little wiggle room if something pops up that makes a lot of sense to them.

Exactly! I understand it maybe not making sense to add Papelbon and Shields (even though if they wanted to go balls out they easily could without the sky falling). It's the ridiculous self imposed budget restrictions of 6M, etc that are frustrating when it would take 12-15M to adequately plug a few of our holes to be seriously competitive. They just seem to pull these restrictions out of their ass and it's maddening..

Estrada can start. Redmond can start. Sanchez could be stretched out. Albers and Francis can spot start. If any team loses 3 starters for an extended period of time in a season they're likely done. I think Sanchez will be the 5th starter anyways.

I can start too.......problem is if they are starting the loses will start to pile up.

2013: 41 SG by crappy starters:

Esmil Rogers - 20

Todd Redmond - 14

Chien-Ming Wang - 6

Ramon Ortiz - 4

Chad Jenkins - 3

Ricky Romero - 2

Aaron Laffey - 1

Nolin - 1
