Governator Community Moderator Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Payroll is still comfortably under last year's. I wonder if the media takes Beeston to task if that remains the case. Probably not. Is it really though in a Canadian market? I could be wrong in my thinking here but: $137 MM exchange rate January 2014 translates to $152.74 MM CDN payroll. $137 MM exchange rate January 2015 translates to $170.60 MM CDN payroll. Is the sinking dollar alone costing Rogers an additional $20MM this season?

CHRIS Verified Member Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 1 year @ $5 million is high, but reasonable IMO.

jays76 Verified Member Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Janssen built an awesome career here, yeah his velocity was waning and he was bad post all star break but it'll be interesting to see what he does next season (and how much of his downfall was really attributed to the DR virus). $5mil if he's a total bust isn't the worst gamble in the world for them, if he contributes then it's $3.5 for the season with no $1.5mil buyout and and they re-sign him again for $3.5-5mil (depending how good his year was). So maybe $7-9mil for 2yrs of him as Tyler Clippard's replacement and insurance if Storen flames out. Might be a really good signing for them and a big loss for us, hopefully not though..

From what I understand (and I'm hardly an expert), it's a pretty standard business practice. They shouldn't feel the impact for a little while just like when the dollar goes up, they don't benefit right away either.

Jonzo Verified Member Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Was listening to PTS today, Stephen Brunt made the comment that the Jays didn't sign Jansen, not because they didn't like his pitching but because they didn't like "the person". Anyone know what he's referring to? If he's talking about his comments last trade deadline, well that wouldn't make sense because Jose was just as vocal.

Seems to be the theme of the offseason including JD. Jose has carried this team the last few years, I think you give him a bit more leash and even expect him to be pissed. You don't tolerate s*** from minor role players.

Minimally He sucks as a bench player, slow, s***** D, can't hit lefties He's borderline replacement level DH or 1B Smoak out of Safeco is better

Lind's comments cost him a spot.

I hope you're right. Lind/Mayberry would be much better...the money is obviously different.

Smoak is a replacement player who does nothing well. Linds only downside was his cost and that another roster spot had to be spent on a platoon partner. A Lind/Valencia platoon would have been one of the best DH spots in baseball.

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Lind/Lawrie/Happ/Cabrera vs Smoak/Donaldson/Estrada/Saunders and arguably some $ left over.
Gorlak Verified Member Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Lind's contract was cheap for his production? Mayberry as a platoon is very cheap, he talked his way out of here. His contract was fair, I think it was that and they didn't like his low effort style. My argument would have been "Who cares, he hit .350 against righties".
Gorlak Verified Member Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Lind/Lawrie/Happ/Cabrera vs Smoak/Donaldson/Estrada/Saunders and arguably some $ left over. Good offseason, Just would have preferred Lawrie/Happ/Cabrera vs Donaldson/Saunders.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Lind/Lawrie/Happ/Cabrera vs Smoak/Donaldson/Estrada/Saunders and arguably some $ left over. This is absurd.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Bautista will end up on the Blue Jays Level of Excellence (plus he chooses his words carefully) which separates him from Janssen.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 This is absurd. That's what they did though. You are all hung up on losing Lind and while his bat was pretty good, you have to accept that AA had decided to either get what he could in return or decline his option. Here's how things went down: Oct 28th: Blue Jays claim Justin Smoak off waivers from Mariners. Nov 1st: Blue Jays trade Adam Lind to Brewers for P Marco Estrada. That's the Smoak/Lind connection. Here's what AA said about the trade: “The more we looked at the areas we needed to address on the team and where we were going to deploy our resources, we ultimately decided we weren’t going to move forward with both Adam and (Edwin) Encarnacion at the first base-DH spot,”
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 This is absurd. Lawrie was traded as part of the package to get Donaldson. Blue Jays likely view Estrada as replacing Happ, at a lower cost and without whining if moved to the BP. Saunders will replace Cabrera in LF. And they did save money over all with these moves. I think they also got better, but hey, that's secondary.

Rusty_Savage Verified Member Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 This is absurd. How is it absurd? Do you think the Jays would be better of with Lind et al over Donaldson et al?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 How is it absurd? Are you claiming that the Jays would be better of with the latter over the former? Not at all, we were discussing 2nd base, and he suggested that move had impact.
