Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 Why don't you play TL? Also, this is minor but that unnecessary capital "D" in the thread title is really bothering me.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 Up to 12 confirmed. Who's who?

I wish I could get in on one of the board leagues, but I get sidetracked and distracted often, so I can't honestly commit to joining a league and actually participating in it consistently. If I know I can make that commitment then I'll try to join whatever league has space in it, but right now I'm really not sure if I'll be available and don't wanna flop out mid-season. Right now I'm considering taking a college semester in the summer, and I know if I do that, I'll end up forgetting about the league.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 following up on what TwistedLogic said above re time commitment ... are there any fantasy leagues where you just pretty much live or die with what you do on draft/auction day? ... assemble your team (with perhaps a few reserves) and then (other than say the possibility of trades) sink or swim with what ya got?

Yeah, draft and hold leagues exist, they are just incredibly boring. There's one gentlemen only league run by a couple of the board's legendary old farts but idk if anyone really bothers with it anymore.

I just run some ESPN mock drafts to get my fantasy league fix every spring. ESPN might have s*** fantasy, but their draft interface is by far the best. I can waste away hours running auction mocks in there. I've been wondering if people might be interested in running a board mock draft on a random afternoon just to fool around, and maybe put up the rosters in a thread for bragging rights on who put together the best roster.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 Hell, maybe we can run a contest based entirely on a one-time mock draft. Run an auction draft in the spring, post the final rosters in a contest thread, and come October, whoever drafted the roster that put together the most collective WAR in 2015 wins the contest. Would anyone be interested in that?

Never done a draft and hold before, so Im unfamiliar with that concept. If it's essentially the same thing, then yeah that sounds easier. Just curious if people would up for something like that.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 ^^^If you can't get in through that link, just join in Yahoo, it's now public, the league is called Texas Hold 'em League
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Looks like it's time to recruit new members.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2015 Author Posted February 9, 2015 Well, we have 13 signed up. Don't know if North of JFaS are gonna join us. Anyways, I've set up a poll. Please be as flexible as possible. We'll wait to see what works for the 13 that have signed up, and then if we agree on a date, we'll have a fixed date, for when we open up the invitations. https://doodle.com/9whmfqqhapm6cgta Please go to the site, fill out the dates that can work for you, and leave a name to identify you, with your Yahoo login.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 Friday, Sat and Sun nights are best for me an Orgfiller. Since there were no Fri or Sat nights in the poll...any Sunday night would be ideal for us.
vanbjfan Verified Member Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 I (ryan Watson, Ball busters) will not be available on the weekdays, because I'm on the west coast and I will not be home from work at 7:00/4:00. So anytime sundays would be good for me. 9:00 et would work wednesdays/thursdays.
King Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 Is this a 20 team auction? Probably would be best to do it on a Sunday afternoon, that's going to take a long time.

Chappy Community Moderator Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 Who here has experience with auction drafts? I did one a few years ago and it took like 5 hours and I don't think it even had 20 teams. Does anyone here play auctions often? Just want to get an idea of how long this will take?

I play auctions often. It's going to take forever. If you've got 25-man rosters, that's 500 nominations. You'll be lucky to get it done in 5 hours.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 Maybe instead of 7pm Sunday night we can move it back to 5ishpm.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2015 Author Posted February 9, 2015 Based on our current voters, looks like a Sunday night works best for everyone. Once we get up to ten votes, we'll solidify a date. Based on what I've seen, I think we can estimate about 20 minutes per roster spot. That's just one minute per player. So with a roster of 20 players, we're looking at about 6 hours, 40 minutes. If we want a full roster of 25, we're looking at 8 hours, 30 minutes. I think with this many people, a nice compromise, would be to auction the first 14 rounds, and then snake draft the rest, with priority based on who has the most money left over. At 14 rounds, it should take us about 4 hours 40 minutes. Another alternative would be to pause the draft, and resume it at a future date, but that involves lining up two dates that work for everybody. Anyway, we can have a vote on it, once we solidify our participants. I know people want to auction the whole thing, but I think it is going to be hard to get 20 people to commit for 8 to 9 hours, and I would like to offer some bench depth as well.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 Sunday 5pm to 11.45ish sounds do able.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 Should we just snake draft instead? I'm not sure I like the idea of splitting the draft auction/snake, and nearly 6 hours is just too long to do a draft on a Sunday night for me.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 It doesn't take one minute per player, Greenwood. Our 12-team auction last year took around three hours IIRC and the added time isn't linear by roster spot. Sunday nights work for me.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 Sunday night it is. lol. I feel kinda bad that Orgfiller and i are going to take all your guys money. But whatever.
