KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 imagine a MIF of Reyes and Weeks... oh my Goins would be practically essential as a late inning guy in that scenario. You'd also want to have one of Weeks, Reyes or Encarnacion on the bench or in the DH slot nearly all the time especially against righties when some of the offensive gain gets cancelled out.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 If the Jays want to attempt to get a lightning in a bottle, High K, big power Juan Francisco type...that if hot right away could put up (over a small sample size) could put up huge numbers they should try and get Zach Walters from Cleveland. I liked his D from what I saw in the minors, he's an athletic guy that can play shortstop and corner OF positions too. He is going to swing and miss a lot but if you don't let him see many lefties (he's a switch hitter) I think he can be a very effective guy for a small sample size. Of course if the Jays are going with an unknown option at 2B they may as well go with Travis.

How do you go about betting on small sample size success? Do you just assume he'll start hot? I guess if his D is solid he should be at least usable when cold which helps.
jays76 Verified Member Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Seriously the answer is Zobrist. The guy takes care of 2nd but can also play practically anywhere if the need arises in a depth situation. He's a lefty too which is huge and only has a year left on his contract so he's the perfect stop gap until Travis is ready. Why don't we flip Navarro & Izturis along with a prospect to get him, the A's need a C and Izzy replaces Zorilla at 2B for them. Everybody's on a 1yr contract and it matches up perfect financially (Zobrist is $7.5M, Navarro is $5M and Izturis is $3M). Maybe even give Billy 2 mid tier prospects if that's what it takes to ice it. Now you still have $10M to work with (Ichiro & 2 Relievers). Tell me we wouldn't be a solid team with depth and ready to contend. All the while without breaking the bank which of course is priority one for Rogers..

He is the kind of guy that smart teams can put into spots where he can succeed (fastball situations, RHP's who throw majority fastballs). What I mean by this is that he's not a full season option as the K's will eventually catch up to him. He has an option so if he's chasing too much in Spring...you send him down. If he's swinging well you start with him. He's more of an insurance policy that fits for this team, than a 2B option.

Those are all appealing traits.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Derek Dietrich is my guy. His power would play much better at Rogers Centre. I'm a fan of his. Have you heard anything to the effect that he might be on the trading block?

Have you heard anything to the effect that he might be on the trading block? Marlins have him at like number 4 on the depth chart. Even if Dee Gordon got hurt they might move Prado over to 2B and bring up Zach Cox. I'd have to think he can be had for pretty cheap.

Steamer Projection is pretty similar to Travis (more power, less OBP, same wOBA) and that's before park adjustments. You would also think Dietrich would have the safer floor.

He smiled and said, "These are things that I can not handle". He suffered an injury that day.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Are you Dominican? No, but I've been there on vacation. Would love to go again now that I'm older and check out the DWL. I vividly remember some white rum as well, but I can't remember what it was called.

Zaun of the Dead Verified Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 to be honest I am completely fine with having Goins play 2nd and batting 9th. His defense is worth it. I am intrigued by Devon Travis though. I am stoked to see what he's capable of, I mean he's gotta be better than Gose right?
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 FWIW, one of my past coaches told me that the FSU Strength and Conditioning coach told him that Travis is the best player he's seen in real life.

If Goins was the 25th man or in Buffalo as depth, that's cool.
