The bigger ballpark will take number on his offensive numbers, he squeaked many HR's and ground rule doubles in Rogers Centre last year and in Chicago those are outs or maybe just singles off the wall because of his speed. Add in the much bigger negative impact playing in a larger LF will have and he will probably regress back to just a 1ish WAR player.

Chicago has a pretty big hitter's park. His numbers won't go down much...

@ShiDavidi: CLARIFICATION: #BlueJays get comp pick after 1st rd for #WhiteSox's $42/3 deal w Melky Cabrera. #Yankees get next pick for David Robertson

If Melky had come down to 3/45 sooner, he might have signed with the Jays but if he really didn't want to play on the turf than there was really no reason for him not to ask for the moon. He got virtually the same deal and he's on grass so I suppose he's happy and if the Jays run with Norris/Saunders they probably won't miss Melky/Happ anyways. Everyone's better off.

Looks like the Jays were right on the market and his agents were not. The Jays struck early and moved on . I'm still hopeing the Jays can sign a 5th starter. Estrada has some value just not in the AL East,s small parks. SD seems a fit. I would do a deal with them for one of their starters.

my sense was AA would've kept Happ if the right deal didn't come along but preferred a trade since, imo, he had no intentions of paying Happ what he'll get paid & the # of years assuming he has a decent season again

The Jays have still had the best off season and its not close

I disagree... Redsox have done better IMO. They added Castillo, Sandoval, Hanley, Miley, Masterson, and Porcello. Thats alot of great players.

Castillo wasn't an offseason signing, Sandoval contract was awful, Hanley in LF was weird, Miley is good, Masterson is bleh, and Porcello came at the expense of Cespedes. Good offseason but not great and Jays has been better

Silvergun get on this:

You could do a lot worse with $95MM than signing a 28-year-old 3.5 win player. That contract may not be a bargain but it will turn out fine.

RedSox might have added a few great players, but the Jays have added two of what maybe top ten players in all of baseball in terms of value. Masterson was not too great last year, and I have never thought much of Porcello. Miley will get a reality check once he gets into the AL. As for there two big free agents signing both above average players, but neither overwhelming

2 Great players >>>>>>>> 10 above average players.

Jays have added two game changing top ten talents

I don't see a problem at all with the Sandoval contract.

Well for one thing, Headley is probably going to get like half that money.

Just because you don't see something doesn't mean its not there. I don't too many fat disgusting out of shape baseball players that don't spend the majority of their 30s out of the disability list.

Ya no team has really come close to the Red Sox. And they are still looking for another top end starter not a bottom rotation pitcher. But Castillo was added last year? Although he looks pretty solid from the couple of games I saw him play.

He's 28, and money isn't an issue for Boston. Maybe someone like Headley made more sense, but he improves the team on a reasonable term that won't hurt their flexibility going forward. It's not a flashy $/WAR move, but it improves the team and I don't think they'll regret it.

I cant believe how average the Sox rotation is. I would have rather added a James Shields than all three of the guys they added. I would also take our rotation over theres, with Stroman

Right, Dickey is 40 years old, and I expect you seem him regress a bit this year. Buerhle is 35, and I think he'll lose another couple of clicks on his pitching and drop off too. But I think Stroman is better than anyone in the Red Sox rotation, for now, until they add someone like Hamels. I am not sure what the Jays plan on doing, hopefully they still recognize they need a proven young #1.

@JonHeymanCBS: melky is said to have had a 4-year offer. but he decided he preferred #chisox. 4-yr team is unknown.

You'd have to assume that the marginal $ for that 4th year just didn't make sense.

3/42 > 4/46, for example. Especially at Melky's relatively young age.

Or he just didn't want to play in Seattle.

Can't read his mind but it's probably not like he'd leave ~12M or something on the table just because he doesn't like Seattle. I'm sure Melky liked the thought of hitting 2nd in front of / playing with Cano.

Pretty sure he was quoted as saying his preference was to play in the East.

I read that too, but I can't remember where. Whatever it was also specified he likes the mid-west too (hahahahahaha).

In terms of talent added, I think Boston has us beat this offseason. They added 2 great hitters and 3 pretty solid starters. Also Castillo (not an offseason signing though)

Now, when you factor contracts and value and stuff, it's undeniable that the Jays have had the best offseason so far.
