Laika Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Front leg hyper extension isn't very good either. Is that a problem in and of itself, or does it just indicate / lead to a cascade of other events that constitute a timing issue?
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 When looking at mechanics, Mark Prior is an interesting case to study. Didn't scouts before say he had "perfect" mechanics? The Inverted W arm action has caused some debate. I've always loved Mark Prior - its unfortunate that his career was cut short. Some of the best stuff I've ever seen. http://www.midwestsportsfans.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Mark-Prior.jpg Some cool articles from this guy Chris O'Leary who studies pitching mechanics: http://clients.chrisoleary.com/Pitching/Inverted-W/The-Science-Behind-the-Inverted-W http://www.chrisoleary.com/projects/pitchingmechanics101/Essays/MarkPriorPitchingMechanics.html
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 I thought with Prior it was the injury suffered from running the bases that effected his mechanics and eventually caused him to wear down. Yay NL for making pitchers hit...
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 So Luke would cost around 7-8 mill, right? Or more? Then why not sign francisco liriano for the closer for about the same money and provides depth if a starter goes down too!
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Also old farts who might sign for less then 5-4 mill per year who might work outta the pen options Floyd,Harang,Hernandez who any be of interest to us? Then the younger one looking to prove worth Medlen ? Would he take a milb with a invite to spring training kinda deal?
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 wat So no? Lol the metrics of a wipe out strike do not play outta the pen? I know he would work as a starter as well but, still would be money well spent would it not? Or do you think he gets more money?
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 No when it comes to predicting future performance. Also, Cotts career ERA = 4.05 FIP = 4.25 xFIP = 4.08 I don't even know what you're talking about. You always write these lines and lines of text which never seem to surround any convincing, thoughtful points. I think you should try to be more concise, more thoughtful, and more researched. To be honest it just seems like you type a mini-essay based on what's at the front of your mind, right or wrong. My point is that he's always performing worse than his peripherals. His career numbers look a bit better because of one good year in 2013 and one good year in 2005. Outside of that, he consistently underperforms his peripherals. Even last year, he had a 4.32 ERA and he blew 9 games. Yeah, herpderp traditional stats, but a 3.86 xFIP isn't a very great number for a late-inning reliever either. Relievers are the toughest players to predict, but some guys just don't perform well under pressure. If we had a strong need for someone like Neal Cotts, I'd be all for a flier to see if he can get back to his 2013 numbers, but we already have two lefties in the pen and there are better relief options on the market.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Or to make it more "concise": every person on this board would hate Neal Cotts if he had just pitched the exact same 2014 season, but for the Jays instead of the Rangers. Nobody would care what his advanced stats were if they had sat through him blowing 9 games, because they'd know that you can't trust him coming into the game. Same reason everyone suddenly hates Janssen, despite him being excellent for three and a half seasons before he got sick.
