how about Valbuena from the Cubs for Osuna?

projected to be a 2 WAR player in 2015. plays 2b and 3b, shows as plus defender at 2b. Had a .341 obp last year

@Wilnerness590 @ShiDavidi @SNJeffBlair @AndrewStoeten @DSzymborski would #Cubs and #bluejays consider Osuna for Valbuena?

Dan Szymborski ‏@DSzymborski · 17m17 minutes ago

@Mikeleelop I believe they would.

@Mikeleelop

@DSzymborski interesting, at some point #bluejays should use their pitching prospects that are 2 years away? I Valbuena a good option at 2B? - 05 Dec

Dan Szymborski @DSzymborski

@Mikeleelop He's not great, but the 2B market stinks and if the Jays want to do win now, they gotta keep pushing.

Are the Jays going for it now? I think they are. Long term they are stacked with young pitching prospects -

Short term - Stroman, Hutchison, Sanchez, Norris

Long term - Hoffman, Osuna, Castro, SRF, Labourt, Smoral etc

So pick one and make a deal to compete now. Not all of them will make the majors, may as well use some to get value while they are prospects. Valbuena can help in the majors now. He's an upgrade at 2B. That's my opinion anyway

Why would the Jays even consider Osuna for Valbuena? I'd rather see them just roll with Travis. Edited by TBJ12

Because Valbuena has already succeeded in Majors. Travis has never played above AA

Travis is a question mark

I would do it. Osuna is coming off TJ and has dominated on command not stuff (Nestor Molina anybody?). Valbuena is a 2-3 WAR player who is controllable for 2 years and can slide over to 3B if the need arises. If we are going for it, why not make a deep 1-9 lineup that are all around for at least 2 more years while retaining the more MLB ready guys like Norris, Sanchez and Castro? We only need 5 rotation spots anyways not 15 lol. I understand everyone's desire to hoard prospects, but you got to be realistic and accept that you have to let some go since we are so pitching heavy in the system and have needs to fill other than on the mound but all in all this is a nice problem to have.

I see what your saying, but I still wouldn't make that deal. I'd rather see them go after Lowrie if they really want an upgrade at 2nd.

Valbuena is more proven defensively at 2B and is coming off a stronger offensive season not to mention the fact your looking at a $4 million player in Valbuena. Literally the only thing Lowrie saves you is a prospect which is one thing we are teaming with. Besides the extra money saved in acquiring Valbuena can go to the rotation/bullpen.

Edit: Lets see anyone else get 3 Valbuena's to lineup on the left hand side unintentionally!

We just dealt 2 near MLB ready starters. I dont see the need to deal another one that's likely not too far off?

Agreed ... does not make sense to trade one of our best pitching prospects for a guy who has had one good year (2014) at age 28

Agreed - if you are saving $$ to spend on bullpen or SP etc, this move is better than FA signing of Lowrie.

Nolin and Graveman are replaceable and Osuna doesn't have the top end upside that others have anyways, what would be the hesitation in holding onto him if you were presented the opportunity to upgrade 2B for the next 2 years?

look at the last three years - he has done well in Chicago. 2 WAR player

that is a big upgrade over what we've shovelled out to play 2b the last few years

Don't forget too that hes played in mostly hitter parks in the NL Central and his OBP is .100 points higher than his average. Would be a perfect offensive fit from the bottom of the lineup to grind out walks to setup the top of the lineup.

We must be talking about a different Valbuena ... the Jays already had Luis Valbuena on their roster in November/2011 but decided he wasn't worth keeping and the Cubs claimed him in April/2012

Other teams had Jose Bautista and let him go for nothing, Nelson Cruz, Encarnacion too. Teams will let players go all the time who get their s*** together elsewhere, it doesn't mean anything now that we let him go then.
