Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 He had season ending knee surgery in June. I lol'd a bit at this. Because the fact that nobody knows this or vaguely recalls some sort of "offseason knee surgery" for him shows what a worthless player he's become. Truly nobody cares anymore. Imagine how ridiculous someone would sound on this board if they were unaware of the injury to even some 24th piece on a 25 man roster like Izturis. But Romero...ya no f***ing clue if that guy's alive or not.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 The pick we would receive is worth anywhere from $8-10M too. I really don't see any argument where signing Melky is a good idea. With the exception that we would have to assume that AA has the skill set in order to attract a new free agent of significance not tarnished by a drug suspension that fulfills a need. 5 years on the job and there's a big goose-egg under that column. AA is kind of like a fat, ugly chick trying to score a mate. If she happens to get to know someone through work or school she has a chance to woo him over time like AA wooed Escobar into that good contract. But lord help her if she goes onto POF or Tinder trying to pick up a random.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 I feel like "not tarnished by a drug suspension" is a very biased criterion. Now I get it why those other guys made fun of you for being a robot...that's the computeriest thing I've ever heard anyone say! Tee hee, you even used the word criteria in its correct singular form. No one does that!

What if we get him at such a significant home town discount that his contract is a really valuable trade commodity after we get another year of good production out of it? There could be a lot of prospect value that player and contract could be traded for.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 Is that just an assumption or is there any substance to it? The Mariners are expected to shop outfielder Michael Saunders at next week’s GM Meetings, reports ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick (Twitter link). Saunders and the organization have had a recent falling out based on some comments that GM Jack Zduriencik made at season’s end. As chronicled by Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times, Zduriencik made comments suggesting that Saunders needs to reassess his offseason workout/maintenance habits in order to be better prepared to play over the course of a full 162-game season. Saunders declined to comment on the words from Zduriencik, but agent Michael McCann expressed both surprise, disappointment and frustration at the comments, feeling that they called Saunders’ work ethic into question. Zduriencik later attempted to clarify, telling Divish that the comment was a general statement that could be applied to any player and wasn’t intended as an attack on Saunders’ drive or work ethic, but the situation does appear to have fractured the relationship between the two sides. Crasnick notes that both the team and player seem ready to move on.

If the terms are reasonable and reasonably short, it can work especially with no DH on the roster but there's no real reason for Melky to give Toronto a substantive discount when he could just take the q.o.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 Almost as dumb as Billy Butler saying publicly that he hopes he and KC could work out a deal even if they declined his option. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3b/Paris_Tuileries_Garden_Facepalm_statue.jpg

I think Melky is primed for an AA contract raping. The Dominican contingent has become like family and we have the 2 better hitters under ridiculously cheap contracts so we can't justify giving him much more than them.

I know AA doesn't like incentives, but Melky really is the perfect situation for one. Do something like 5/40 with incentives that bring it up to 5/70 or something.

wamco Verified Member Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 The steroids shouldn't be an issue anymore. The guy made a mistake. I'm sure he's learned how to avoid detection properly since then. Obviously, from seeing the au-naturel results in 2013, he can't go back to no steroids, but I'm confident he won't get busted again, as long as he's careful about his supplier. Yes, the Testosterone Gummies he probably pops before the games is the bigger issue now. They are out of your system before the game is over so even if tested right after the game, you pass the test.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Pompey LF, Gose/Pillar CF, sign Headley and Martin
shortstop Verified Member Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Headley ain't coming to tdot IMO, he doesn't seem the type to come here on his own volition. And I'm likely not attending any games next year with that OF.

And I'm likely not attending any games next year with that OF. Headley will go where the money is. He needs to cash in before his back gives out. That's a great defensive OF - highlight reel plays almost every game. With that lineup there's a solid 1-8 and Gose or Pillar batting 9th.

reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Martin would be a significant upgrade but you guys need to be realistic FFS. The Jays are completely missing either a third or second baseman, and one or two outfielders, along with needing some bullpen help. I know Navarro isn't the best, but that should be far from the #1 priority.
43211234 Verified Member Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Let Melky walk, trade for Saunders from the M's, and sign Jed Lowrie and Russel Martin. I think that team makes the playoffs after a few minor tweaks.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Pompey outperforms Saunders easily IMO In any event, AA's hands were tied until Melkman made his move. Now that $15M has been freed up, we may see some moves as soon as this weekend. Maybe for the Cuban 2B? Lot of possibilities
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Pompey outperforms Saunders easily IMO So you go Saunders/Pompey/Bautista with Gose 4OF and Pillar as depth
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 So you go Saunders/Pompey/Bautista with Gose 4OF and Pillar as depth This makes too much sense for it not to get done. Fully expect AA to do the opposite
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 AA offers Raul Ibanez 1 year 4 million with a mutual option
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 So you go Saunders/Pompey/Bautista with Gose 4OF and Pillar as depth Right but you have to move an asset (Happ?) to get Saunders. Open a hole elsewhere. OF upgrade is a much lower priority than 2B, C, and pitching for me
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 AA offers Raul Ibanez 1 year 4 million with a mutual option "He was going to retire but we talked him out of it." Right but you have to move an asset (Happ?) to get Saunders. Open a hole elsewhere. OF upgrade is a much lower priority than 2B, C, and pitching for me Disagree that pitching is a weakness. There's lots of good depth and we can afford to move some of it for Saunders. Sure it's not a priority but it's an easily filled need that imho we should jump on
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Pompey LF, Gose/Pillar CF, sign Headley and Martin Toronto is probably Martins final choice
