Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 I will volunteer to drive Navarro to the airport if it helps make this happen. Your poor suspension...
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Would obviously love the signing but I don't think AA has the balls to pay up what is going to be needed for this guy. There are some pretty rich teams who could use a catcher including Texas, Boston, Dodgers, Cubs, and I think Pitt puts in a very healthy offer. Don't see it happening.
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 If we get martin I will never bring up how s***** the Lind trade was and praise our sAAviour
bendera3 Verified Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 We probably wouldn't be able to resign Melky then.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Wait a second. We already have Reyes. We don't need two shortstops.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 No? Lol nice troll job ang. The guy is very inconsistent and the price will be very high.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Would we then develop Pentecost as a 2B? No reason to do that unless injuries force you to do it. Pentecost's biggest selling point is his ability to stick at catcher. If you're lucky enough to have him breathing down Martin's neck, that's a nice problem to have and you worry about it if and when it actually happens.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Would we then develop Pentecost as a 2B? Nah. If C is the position that he's best suited for then you develop him as a C. His most likely developmental scenario = backup catcher anyway. If he turns into a stud, then clear a spot or trade him at value when you reach that point in time.

We need a defence first catcher that can help groom the pups
Horses Fart Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 I like Martin but why is everybody dropping their loads for him?
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 They're not getting Martin though, not unless the market almost completely falls out from under him. Which isn't an impossible scenario. He didn't really work out great for the Yankees when they gave him a free agent deal, and the Pirates don't have much monies. Dodgers though. I'm pretty sure he'll go back to LA.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 I like Martin but why is everybody dropping their loads for him? A good catcher with a good bat is the single most impactful player you can sign.
Hipfan Verified Member Posted November 3, 2014 Author Posted November 3, 2014 I wouldn't say Navarro is the worst, he's got a decent bat and the pitchers like throwing to him. He's not an everyday catcher though, so the Jays really need to improve the position, and while it would be great to sign Martin, it's not likely due to AA unwillingness to play the FA game. I also read the Montero may be on the block, so there may be some other options out there to upgrade at catcher.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 I like Martin but why is everybody dropping their loads for him? Because it would likely signal the end to the Dickey Thole platoon! Plus Navarro on the bench would be a huge upgrade over Thole any day.
ace3113 Verified Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 The time to get him was 2 years ago when his value was down. I remember a few of us were saying we should sign him but there were others who were saying he was in decline and that we just wanted him cause he was Canadian. I wish I could find that thread now. lol
xposbrad Verified Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 $60M/5 years is dirt cheap for a guy that would be worth 150M+ over 5 years. Nah, Martin would be worth 2.43 BILLION a year, not 30 million.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Nah, Martin would be worth 2.43 BILLION a year, not 30 million. The dodgers can afford this Their new TV deal pays them 100 bazillion dollars per game. The dodgers now will be getting all the Money in the universe per game

The dodgers now will be getting all the Money in the universe per game I think there was actually some recent reports that their TV deal could be in some trouble, and they might be looking to cut some payroll if possible.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 This is seriously not even news. The Jays are always in discussions. There is no way they outbid teams who don't care about overpaying to get a good, proven player. Melky is a maybe, and after that I'd say Jed Lowrie is the next best player they could sign.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 No one answered this yet for me can you do a trade and sign deal and not have to give up a pick? Or trade Melkey so they still get a pick if we have no intentions to sign him?

Then again, there may be a consent clause, I don't know.
shortstop Verified Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 not sure what Martin will command but my goodness, if you have a chance to sign him, sign him. Trade Navarro and his what, $5M contract & live with Thole as your backup. Martin knows how to win & the jays need more of these guys.

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Miguel Montero dummy. Ok that makes sense. I'm dumb
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 I discussed banging Scarlett Johansson a few years ago. Didn't work out though.
