Surprisingly good cheap draft by J.P. Hutch was a major get and Marisnick might have a career as a fourth outfielder at the very least.

I don't see how JP get's credit for that. JP pushed for 2 prospects from the Reds (who busted) and in order to get said prospects the price was to take on Encarnacion. And as you said JP has said multiple times that the Joey Bats trade was AA coming up to him and asking for 'his blessing' to make a deal for him. It's fair to say JP had 'talents' i guess, but you can't use those 2 examples to try and argue your point. lol

You're right, his best talent was assembling a bullpen.

I also remember reading about AA's involvement in the Bautista trade, but don't care enough to look for the source.

 

You can't expect any GM to make a trade like that one every 5 years. AA has made some other decent trades. He struggled when it came time to start winning. However, the Lawrie, Rasmus, Morrow and Escobar trades weren't too shabby. Re-signing EE after Billy Beane let him go for nothing is a decent move as well. You would think they had completely given up on him after letting him go, but they obviously saw something there to get him back and stop playing him at 3B.

 

I imagine some would be ridiculing him had it been Beane who brought him back and reaped the rewards.

 

This is not to say that AA is a great GM, or a good one for that matter. Just pointing out that he has done some decent things.

When we say JP did a good job - I don't exactly see a stud in the list and he didn't sign Paxton so drafting and not signing to me is an indication that they didn't know what they were doing - they should know generally what it will take to the sign the player. Drafting a number 4 starter and a lefty specialist are nice but where is the stud core position player?

Rays spent approximately $4M on that draft, Red Sox approximately $7M, Yankees about 7.5M. Jays in comparison were $5M approximately. Whatever changed for JP that year in comparison to other years he got great value out of his draft.

 

 

In looking up the bonuses spent I came up with this BA pre-draft write up for Goins. It sound pretty funny now

Friedman's regime has not really had a lot of draft results. But I'd say that they target bats over arms and power over athleticism. I would bet they value bat speed over all other tools...when you read about many of their draft picks it's about good bat speed and max effort guys. Seldom about huge ceilings. Doesn't help that their entire 2010 class started smoking crack.

The 2009 draft was definitely a good one for the Jays and if they had signed Paxton it would have been even more impressive. Mike Trout overshadows the entire draft class but the Jays weren't the only team to pass on him and overall it was a good haul. The only problem with attributing credit to him for this draft was that Beaston had already started the process of phasing him out J.P. at this point so it's not clear how involved he was. I remember reading something to the effect that Jenkins was a J.P. pick and Paxton an AA pick (the beginning of a shift towards the future GM'S drafting philosophy). What further muddies the waters is that at some point neither AA nor JP would have been much involved in the draft because the scouting director would have taken sole responsibility for the picks.

This draft was unlike any JP draft prior so I'm tempted to believe that he was phased out. Jenkins does look like a typical JP pick, but then AA picked Deck a year later, so can't say for sure. The later rounds definitely resemble the drafting post-JP, but Beeston didn't mind going overslot while Godfrey was against it so that may have just been a philosophy change. Tough to say. Either way, definitely a good draft. If Gomes panned out in Toronto instead of Cleveland, it would have been better.
