jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 I wonder if we could make a serious push for Giancarlo Stanton for one of our young pitchers (Stroman/Sanchez/Norris) + Pompey + Barreto + low end guy with upside and then move Lind for anything so we could have Stanton in LF. AA loves his star players. Likely looking at Lawrie, Stroman and Sanchez I'd say.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 C Navarro 1B Edwin Encarnacion 2B Asdrubal Cabrera SS Jose Reyes 3B Chase Headley RF Jose Bautista CF Anthony Gose LF Giancaro Stanton DH Adam Lind/Van Slyke SP Shields SP Dickey SP MB SP Hutch SP Happ AAA: Norris, Nolin, Drabek Not gonna happen, though that's what the team would roughly look like trading Lawrie, Stroman and Sanchez for Stanton. Plus you have to figure the Jays would need to sign a starter like Shields, a third baseman like Headley. Just don't see Stanton happening.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 I'd say a trade for Justin Upton would be more realistic since it would be easier and wouldn't cost as much as Stanton.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 I would in that situation probably trade Lind for an outfielder (Pittsburgh was interested) and Lowrie for 2B since he will likely cost less and then you could move Melky to DH where he at least has some positional flexibility that Lind lacks. Who do you replace Stroman and Sanchez with in the rotation though? You'd need a lot of money for Shields, and you suggesting bringing back Melky would also cost a lot of money. I could see Lowrie as a 2B option, though trading for Stanton (as much as I love him) wouldn't be rational for the Jays especially if they don't increase their payroll. In fantasy baseball, I'd trade Lawrie, Sanchez and Stroman for Stanton anyday of the week though
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 29, 2014 Author Posted September 29, 2014 I don't have a problem with Lind as a DH/1B. Just find another solid platoon partner, someone who can also play a position. A Lind/Van Slyke or Lind/Gomes platoon would be great. Though I'm sure we likely see Lind/Mayberry instead. JMJ career vs LHP .269/.324/.533 OPS .857

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 what a windbag said nothing of substance at all. Little direction for this team going forward and missed a rare window with a mostly weak AL east division. The division combined to be 12 games over .500 this season. Hardly qualifies as weak imo. Whether the 96 win team is Baltimore and the 71 win team is Boston or the other way around it doesn't really matter to the context of the Jays making it.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 I am fine with the rotation as is. The only thing I'm fine with on this team as is really. The priorities on this team should be: 1. Getting a quality MIF 2. Shoring up Melky/setting the OF (I'm ok with Gose in CF and Pillar/Mayberry backup) 3. Upgrade to catcher 4. Another good MIF backup/lower end starter who can cover for the inevitable injuries 5. Bullpen But based on what I have heard from this thread it looks like the order in AA's eyes is something like: 1. Bullpen 2. Maybe a MIF 3. QO Melky and hope he accepts 4. SP 5. I dunno.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Unfortunately, the best fit for Stanton might be Boston. They have the prospects to get him and the need in the OF. Hopefully he re-signs with Miami.

Stanton isn't the type of player you pass on because you already have three outfielders. If you have the chance to acquire him and lock him up you do it and make room later.

And in all honesty I'd love to see the Sox get Stanton. It gets him out of a s*** run organization and into a good one.

And in all honesty I'd love to see the Sox get Stanton. It gets him out of a s*** run organization and into a good one. Not happening. Marlins want a LOT more than Betts and other prospects. Any trade for Stanton will require the Marlins to get a big young controllable power bat in any deal. Betts does not project to be even close to Stanton.. he's basically similar to Pedroia, but is blocked at 2B and is being forced into the OF. And acquiring Stanton makes all that money invested in Castillo look stupid. Plus, Boston probably wants to avoid another repeat of the Adrian Gonzalez deal.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 I would prefer he goes to a good organization outside of our division Second choice s*** organization outside our division Third choice stay where he is Most likely 2nd or 3rd. All this hype about Stanton to the Red Sox are mostly invented by Red Sox Nation because they want a quick fix.. but it would not be a wise trade, especially when the Sox need young talent to replace soon to be declining veterans like Victorino, Ortiz, Napoli, etc.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 how long until AA comes back and gives the internal options speech?
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 AA was on TSN radio claiming that if the Jays had an average bullpen, it would be us playing that game tomorrow. LOL

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 And a decent 2B as well. Nope didn't mention anything about a 2nd baseman. Just said if you look at our bullpen we were 11th in the league, if we were somewhere even average, we are in that game tommorrow
