kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 According to Cotts the Jays spent 137,177,000 in 2014. Any off season moves are dependent on the budget. Many suggest signing a Lester or a Schertzer and that would take 17 to 25 million. I think it is realistic for posters to account for budget in their off season suggestions/dreams.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 27, 2014 Author Posted September 27, 2014 i think it will drop to the 120 -130 range
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 i think it will drop to the 120 -130 range Wouldn't surprise me. They said it wouldn't, but after they lied about the payroll space at the deadline nothing would surprise me.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 I really have no idea what they'll do in terms of payroll range. If the tv ratings really are much stronger this year, I would expect they would want to keep the trend going and at the very least not DROP the payroll. Lind might be an interesting case to help us determine the direction.

They said it wouldn't, but after they lied about the payroll space at the deadline nothing would surprise me. Having AA lie for them just pissed me off. The DFJ article totally expressed my view of Rogers. As it stated Rogers have done a great job of convincing the casual fan this is a small market.

Haha that made me laugh. When's the last time they signed a big name free agent? AJ Burnett back in December 2005?

Actually I wasn't thinking straight. He's worth more than the option, so it'll be picked up regardless. The question is whether he'll still be on the team or traded.

If the budget drops below 120 then I can see Lind being moved but what do they do at DH ?
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 Just overpay Melky on an AAV basis to get him to sign a 2 or 3 year deal. Do not give this guy 4-5 years FFS. 2/28-30 or something like that. I doubt he gets more than 10-11 per year on the open market anyways even if the OF market is thin. Too many question marks.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 27, 2014 Author Posted September 27, 2014 ask moogy, he has the answer. lol

Love that East but Melky is going to get paid this year 4/13 at least and I won't be surprised if he gets 4/14 or 15
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 30, 2014 Author Posted September 30, 2014 SSS on the votes but either there is a lot of sarcastic voting here or a lot of optimists. The thread on Rogers financials make me wonder if they even get in the 120 to 130 mil range. Pelly kept saying there was money but the truth came out when all the news reports said the jays could not take on any more salary at the deadline. Attendance dropped 161 K which put them 15th on the list. Had they signed Santana I believe the Hype alone would have caused a gain in attendance and paid the extra salary Create some hype this off season and I believe att. will go up.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 I would love 150, but wouldn't be surprised if it's 120
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 I optimistically say it stays the same. They're not spending more money on baseball players with these crappy financials. http://www.bluejaysmessageboard.com/threads/3959-Rogers-is-not-going-to-spend-any-more-money-on-baseball-players The best we can hope for imo is it stays the same. And if Buehrle gets dumped we'll know there is pressure to decrease it. No other team around the league gets scrutinized with financials displayed four times a year for everyone to see with a stock price riding on that. This is the life of being owned by a publicly reporting and trading corporation...one whose business is struggling for growth. As far as there being lies about the payroll (not sure if the liar term is meant for AA/PB or Rogers itself), Rogers in 2012 was a lot different than Rogers now. New management, complete halt on all revenue growth and 18 months of a non-performing stock price does these things. No one "lied" per se, Rogers is just in the process of desperately changing direction. There's probably lots of people in Rogers who were "lied" to about their jobs being safe in late 2012. Being lied to about salary flexibility for baseball players is going to be the same.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 30, 2014 Author Posted September 30, 2014 If Buehrle gets moved it will be a salary dump and none of that money is coming back into the team unless they are taking some salary back in the deal. Add to that the inability to attract free agents and where does AA spend it unless he hugely overpays which he has shown he won't do. A lot of reasons to not like Toronto as a destination for FAs. Country/border, turf, AL East,s small ball parks and limited secondary income potential. Gillick finally made this organization a place players wanted to play thru winning and reputation. Rogers and Retardi totally destroyed that with their actions and words. Wish I could find the BA article on that.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 30, 2014 Author Posted September 30, 2014 This is a question virtually no team should ever ask themselves (unless you happen to have a big ole hobbled masher fall into your lap). Moogy ,I totally understand your issue with Lind eating up a bench position. We all get it. I have yet to see a fiscally responsible replacement.

I think Rogers should fire the people who thought "Next Issue" was a brilliant, money making idea and use that money to boost payroll...

They own that s***? I guess that explains the barrage of ads. What is it with Rogers and thinking magazines are still a thing?
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 They own that s***? I guess that explains the barrage of ads. What is it with Rogers and thinking magazines are still a thing? From the linked thread... "Media’s operating revenue was more than offset by ... ramp-up costs associated with the launch of Next Issue Canada." That's my only indication that they own that, but what a f***ing dumb idea that is, and it should be dumped NOW before they just keep shoveling money on that obvious money loser.

The only two big free agents to sign here were during the JPR era in 5 years AA hasn't signed one, unless you count Melky who was discarded by many teams because of PED abuse. In fact AA had the opportunity to sign Darvish and didn't but instead gave that money to Reyes

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 However much they put forth, it will be just short because AA needs a 250 million dollar payroll in order to win and Rogers is too damn cheap.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 30, 2014 Author Posted September 30, 2014 You don't get it. You don't look to replace the DH. Is this going to be another jaysfan2014/saskjaysfan discussion where they keep talking about how they get that we're talking about defense-independent pitching, and then go on to comment about how the defense will cause the pitching to regress? No I do get it. The optimum use of the DH is to have position players rotate thru the position whether it be Reyes or Melky or Bautista. We don't even have enough above replacement level position players to fill out a line up card let alone the DH role. In my dreams I would add players like Headley or Hanley and Melky etc etc but I also dream of having the yankees budget and a top 3 farm system and a rotation that includes Corey Kluber and Kershaw and KC,s bullpen. Then i wake up and realism sets in and no matter how I try to replace Lind,s bat at 6.5 million i can,t. Obviously you are so much smarter than me and you can.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 Once Juan Francisco meets with Luis Mercedes this winter, we will have our new first baseman. Why can't lightening strike three times?
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 30, 2014 Author Posted September 30, 2014 However much they put forth, it will be just short because AA needs a 250 million dollar payroll in order to win and Rogers is too damn cheap. 137 million is enough as many have posted but as BTS pointed out when the Marlins deal was done it isn't enough when Buehrle and Reyes are eating up 41 million of that unless you have the farm producing a lot of high talent cheap additions.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted October 17, 2014 Author Posted October 17, 2014 Falling Canadian dollar now at around 88 cents . Now i know the jays have hedged some funds but that costs money too. AA 139 mil budget last year now costs aprox 157 million. The Beest if you believe him says the budget is going up but will be eaten up by the exchange rate.
