Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Thats tough, what happened to AA giving free agents the opportunity to play for a contract like with John Buck?
immature Verified Member Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 It doesn't say he is going to be benched for remainder of the season, it just states he will see reduced playing time. If we somehow come closer to the remaining WC I could see him playing.

What does this say: "Rasmus will be regulated to the bench for the rest of the season in favor of the Blue Jays' young talent, he told John Lott of the National Post. " First line of the article.

immature Verified Member Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 "I'll be playing whenever they think I should play and I’m just going to be sitting around watching these rookies play,". The score writer just sensationalized what John Lott said. Read the National Post article.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Yea I really wish JPA got more playing time. Not the point. Plus JPA wasn't a free agent, they still had him under control for 2-3 more years. My point was AA saying he would give free agents to be the chance to play for a contract.
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Just let him go home now. Hard to see him really getting in there unless someone is injured. Maybe a PH to try to capitalize on his power. It was all but certain he wasn't going to be resigned during this year when he fell apart. At this point the FO seems to want to take the last month to gauge the younger players to see what they can do and move on from Rasmus a bit earlier than usual. It's tough for him but I doubt the final month would have him turn it around enough to make a bigger splash for a contract. The Jays want to see what they have next year and he isn't in the plans. Maybe they'll give him a few starts at the end but the Jays' focus is to see what the youngersters can do and if they might be of help next year.
immature Verified Member Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 If the Jays still have a chance when playing the Os or Ms, Rasmus will be playing against righties.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 http://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/569632 Bye Colby. What a disappointment for Colby and us this yr has been. He was overall one of our best players in 2013 and I thought he would take off this season. There is no way to play him now because we don't want pay him and shouldn't. Better to go with the future. He has earned the pine frankly. He isn't adding consistent value over alternatives. His pappy ain't gonna be happy. This is how he rolls...right outa Toronto.

Rasmus was one of my favorite Jays last season, this year he hasn't been good at all. He never hit that stretch where he goes straight super nova, he's fun as hell to watch when he gets in that groove.

I think the poster was making a comment on the over-reaction of the fans in that case as most wanted to see more JPA at the end of that season.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Rasmus was one of my favorite Jays last season, this year he hasn't been good at all. He never hit that stretch where he goes straight super nova, he's fun as hell to watch when he gets in that groove. If only someone in the FO saw an guy that had a 100 point increase in BABIP and a career high in HR/FB ratio (which he actually almost matched this year) and thought...maybe it will be tough for him to repeat and maybe we should extract max value out of him. Seriously there were two options that made sense in this past off season with Rasmus, trade him or extend him. All the people that said "don't worry about trading him, just qualifying offer him" look pretty stupid now. On a side note, no one in baseball has cost themselves more money this year than Colby. He's the anti BJ Upton.
bronson44 Verified Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Article from Shi Davidi on Rasmus http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/puzzling-year-for-snakebit-rasmus-blue-jays/ “We’ve got guys in here that just hit little bleeders and little dinkers, you know? I don’t ever get any of those, never. Balls never fall for me. My hits are, like pow, suck on that, you know?"
GNick49 Verified Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 You'd thought he would have waived Rasmus at deadline
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 This is disappointing in that Rasmus would make a pretty awesome 4th OF for the right money, but there's probably zero chance he signs here now.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 He's alright against rightys.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 So I literally opened this thread, and right as I clicked the link that implied he was done for the year, he hit a homer in the top of the 10th against the Rays on the stream in my other tab. *shrug*

That's why I had to say something, anything.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Not sure. But I like him more as a lefty bat off the bench. I think they should go with Gose still.
immature Verified Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 It will be interesting to see who Gibby goes with against righties. He will be probably start Colby the next game hoping he gets on a roll after that big HR. I would rather Rasmus, simply so we can have some speed on the bench. I don't expect much from either. Pillar probably plays lefties for remainder.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Rasmus should still be starting. You just gotta hope he heats up for these last few weeks. If he DOES, he could potentially carry us into the playoffs. Drop Rasmus in the offseason and go with Gose/Pillar next year though.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 I like a buy low on Colby and a QO to Melky (he won't take it). 2014 Colby is simply one of his off years.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 I'd rather buy low on Colby Rasmus instead of bringing back Cabrera on a big contract. I think Colby will be undervalued on the market, and he'd definitely be worth bringing back in my opinion.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Colby was close to being a 5 WAR player last season. He was more valuable than Adam Jones last season!
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Colby was close to being a 5 WAR player last season. He was more valuable than Adam Jones last season! Except Colby performed well above his true talent in 2013 and Adam Jones didn't. Colby just isn't a great player. But his stock may be down enough that a pillow contract to stay in Toronto could make sense.

Hope to be wrong but I think we will all be shaking our noodles at the insanely expensive 3-4 year FA deals signed this coming off season. Some GM will take a shot on getting 2013 Rasmus and lock him up at a # Rogers can't justify. He sucked ass this year but he is still well above replacement level player imo.
