Jayday Verified Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Just announced on Twitter he is going to Buffalo. Big step up for a position player. Not sure I agree with the move. Also u said I'm not sure what 200 ABs do for a switch hitter in AA. So your not sure about any of this, then how can you disagree?
Chappy Community Moderator Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Please god not Reimold. Dude is pretty much replacement-level. We have so few options. I'm expecting AA to resign Melky anyways.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2014 Author Posted August 20, 2014 I know he is, but I doubt he gets the starting gig right from the start of the season, and I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to award him that so early. Unless we resign Rasmus or get another CF acquisition, I think Gose gets the starting job in CF with Pompey getting starts in CF against lefties and moving around the OF on other days. I really doubt they will bring him up to platoon. He will need everyday ABs to keep developing and IIRC he is stronger against RHP although it could be the other way around. Does anyone know if minorleaguecentral.com has reliable GB/FB numbers? FWIW it has his LD% at NH this season at 8% and a GB% of 48%.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Not seeing him being rushed at all. He's in his 5th year as a pro, he's got to be added to the 40 man by October anyway...and Buffalo is in a playoff drive whereas New Hampshire is just finishing out the season. He should have a chance to battle for a starting job next Spring...I don't think they will give it to him but he deserves the chance.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 What I liked about his stay at AA was that he struggled early, but kept walking and struck out less than at Dunedin before turning things around. I think he played plenty well enough to earn this promotion, but I can see why some are calling it a panic move. But remember, same was said about Norris and look at how well he's pitched thus far. Good to see a positional prospect join the upper minors. Pretty decent year for the system with Stroman, Norris, Pompey and Barreto having stellar years with one reaching the majors, 2 of them AAA and Barreto probably deserved a promo to Lansing. Castro made it to Lansing. Smoral showed development. Osuna is back pitching although not pitching great. Some of the lower minors lefties also showing some good signs like Borucki, Lietz, Labourt, Smith. We could mention guys like Graveman as well reaching AAA and Cole AA. Both could be cheap SP depth options for next year, along with Nolin, or end up as cheap middle relievers. We'll see what happens...
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Pompey would be the ideal insurance policy in AAA to start the season. If AA has any intentions of this team actually contending next season he needs to do a better job of building depth in AAA with legitimate talent. Melky/Gose/Bautista would be my ideal OF, although truth be told I wouldn't be opposed to an OF of Reimold/Gose/Bautista if AA actually gets a legitimate 4th OF who can platoon with Gose. Depth could be much improved next year with guys like Pompey, Pillar plus guys like Burns, Schimpf, Jimenez and Goins in Buffalo. I guess Pillar could be part of a platoon with Gose, but we'll see. SP depth: Nolin, Graveman, Norris, possibly Taylor Cole.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Oh and Gose was 0-4 with 4K last night.
GNick49 Verified Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 If Pompey continues to hit in AAA and possibly here in September and continues to impress in the spring, he'd be the obvious choice to start in CF. Gose is nowhere near as offensively talented as Pompey. It's a tough call nonetheless. Can't count on prospects like Pompey though as most will fail or underachieve. Travis Snider they called him up one year, he hit heck out of the ball as a 20 year-old. Every poster was saying he be a superstar by 24-25. Looked like that until scouts figured out he couldn't hit major league caliber breaking pitch. Brett Lawrie another year he was our top prospect, every poster wanted him called up. Wait another 15 days that way we have his rights extra year on other end they were saying. Nobody took into consideration he's a piece of glass. Kyle Drabek the key of Halladay trade, was going to be backbone of our rotation for next half decade posters were saying. Until he got to major leagues and blew his arm out. Travis d'Arnand I remember Keith Law saying on FAN590, TDA was best catching prospect in minors. Not even a distant 2nd best he is so far ahead. He's now barely above a replacement level player with the Mets. Dustin McGowan was once best arm to come thru our system. The list is long, majority of top rated prospects will not live up to expectations. I would estimate 1 in 5, 1 in 4 be tops go on to do what is projected. There are some back rated prospects, not on radar screen who do have decent careers. Guys like a Loup or Yan Gomes.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 And finally, Pompey is ahead of Gose and Pillar in Jays OF depth.

This is simply a player earning his promotions through the system. If he continues to achieve and earns a MLB roster spot, then you give him a shot. How else you going to find out if he's capable? If he sticks, he sticks, if not move on. Your post is pointless.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 He's our new Shannon Stewart!
TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 lol at this rate, in another month Pompey will be our solution for a starter next year... What do you mean? This worked amazingly with Goins this year. o wait.
tercet Verified Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Im driving down to the Buffalo game on Thursday from Toronto if anyone wants a ride.. Gonna leave noonish
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 I'm not sure why people are inferring from this that Pompey will be up with the club in September. You don't typically add people to your 40 man just for a September callup and the Jays in particular have not been at all aggressive with September callups since Travis Snider in 2008.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Hmmmm.. I hope this doesn't mean they're not too serious in extending Melky. Sign Melky and start Pompey in CF. Pompey Reyes Melky Bautista EE Good God.. Hopefully that's not the lineup to start the year.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 I see a problem with this, why rush him? But what the f*** do I know. I see it as a rush if Pompey is our Opening Day LF in 2015. Until then, a 2 week promotion to Buffalo and maybe a September call-up isn't hurting anything.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 I can actually see this. "He finished the season in left last year, and did a really nice job for us, so right now he has to be considered the incumbent". Somewhere, Eric Thames is doing a slow clap.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 So you're saying its undeserved? 2015 OD starting lineup, for sure.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Pompey was actually doing quite well in AA. Not every move is a panic move out of desperation. If the time he spent in AA and the little time he spends in AAA leads to an OD roster spot in 2015, it's a panic/desperation/PR move.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 At least september might be somewhat watchable with Pompey, Norris, Sanchez and Stroman all with the big league club. I like watching young players over mediocre vets more than anyone. But moving Norris, Sanchez & Pompey to the majors this quick screams desperation.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 If Pompey continues to hit in AAA and possibly here in September and continues to impress in the spring, he'd be the obvious choice to start in CF. Gose is nowhere near as offensively talented as Pompey. It's a tough call nonetheless. I'd say too soon.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Don't forget, AA is probably somewhat desperate. What better way to impress the brass by starting the Pompey campaign early? Local kid is now the starting CF of your Toronto Blue Jays. PR dream and $$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Ownership will be very impressed. I agree with the train of thought and it's f***ing stupid this s*** bleeds into our FO.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 So your ok with Stroman?
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 So your ok with Stroman? Are you asking me this?
JuniorFelix Verified Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 He's our new Shannon Stewart! That actually seems like a reasonable comp. I do hope Dalton has more of an arm than Shannon though.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Somewhere, Eric Thames is doing a slow clap. Anyone else see what Eric Thames is doing this year? 1.055 OPS...
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Anyone else see what Eric Thames is doing this year? 1.055 OPS... Clearly Korea agrees with him. Good on him.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Clearly Korea agrees with him. Good on him. Which puts him in 4th by the way. Nice to see him doing good.
