TBJ12 Verified Member Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 I think I'd rather see them use in house options rather than overpay Akoi to come here.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 6, 2014 Author Posted November 6, 2014 They need a 2B/3B far more than a LFer. I'd much rather go with Pompey than Goins. There just isn't a whole lot out there. Assuming Sandoval and Hanley are too expensive, you have Lowrie, Cabrera, Drew, and Headley. IMO Cabrera is going to get a multi-year deal and is a decent bet to tank completely, and Drew really isn't bankable at all. Headley and Lowrie on ~3/40 deals are really the only attractive options.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 Dear lord that's a terrible roster for $118 million

BTS Community Moderator Posted November 6, 2014 Author Posted November 6, 2014 Dear lord that's a terrible roster for $118 million Four replacement-level starters, an awful bench, and weak bullpen isn't doing it for you?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 Dirks missed all of 2014 with injuries. I wouldn't count on him until he proves he is healthy. At least we know when he is healthy, he can be a 1.5-2.0 WAR player, so for that alone he's worth keeping around at ~$1.5M and three years of control. The real key is what they do for 2B. Add someone like Valbuena, and I'm more comfortable going cheap in the outfield. However, if it's more of the same (Goins, Kawasaki, Izturis, etc) then we are in trouble.

Is Dirks still capable of that level of play? League-average hitter with no platoon splits and no baserunning value. You have to assume he's still a good LF defender at 29 after disk surgery to pencil him in at 1+ WAR.

AA is probably despairing them by offering Happ and wanting Kendrick's contract covered.

Chappy Community Moderator Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 Despair for the win!!!! In the end AA just despairs the fan base.

You have to assume he's still a good LF defender at 29 after disk surgery to pencil him in at 1+ WAR. Dombrowski let him go for health reasons so I'm not optimistic about him returning to that level, especially since his main issues I believe were with his back and hamstrings, which are two things turf is not going to help. Regardless, it's probably worth it to try. He won't be expensive and is controllable for a few years. He doesn't have to be platooned and was a plus defensive player in LF prior to 2014, but yes, we can't assume he will regain that defensive form.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 The Jays need to trade Happ for the next Brian Dozier. There has to be some undervalued minor league player out there that hasn't gotten a chance yet despite performing in the minors.
shortstop Verified Member Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 I would put, on the level of priority, with much sadness if only one of these needs is filled: a) OF - gotta have at least 2 legitimate everyday guys out there 2B - ugh, cringe at the though of replacement level for the 3rd straight year c) bullpen I'm gonna repeat myself in the event this gets back to AA - trade Buehlre for a solid major league 2B, sign Aoki, sign Russell & get rid of Navarro.

What is the likelihood of Navarro being moved. I wouldn't think it's that high. Unless the Jays really are in on Martin is there any other scenario where Navarro gets move?

IMO: 1. C 2. 2B 3. OF 4. bench 5. bullpen
Chappy Community Moderator Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 IMO: 1. C 2. 2B 3. OF 4. bench 5. bullpen I'd flip C and 2B, but the rest I agree with.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 6, 2014 Author Posted November 6, 2014 I'd flip C and 2B, but the rest I agree with. That's valid. I think they're both replacement level, but with framing undervalued it's easier to significantly upgrade C than 2B. Should have acquired Conger.

I think they're both replacement level, but with framing undervalued it's easier to significantly upgrade C than 2B. Should have acquired Conger. Foolhardy dogmatism towards framing is getting kind of annoying. Yes it's real and yes it's big but.... Hank Conger? Really?
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 If they actually resigned Melky they would have a worst team then last year at an higher payroll lmao
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 6, 2014 Author Posted November 6, 2014 Foolhardy dogmatism towards framing is getting kind of annoying. Yes it's real and yes it's big but.... Hank Conger? Really? Over Thole? Absolutely.
shortstop Verified Member Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 IMO: 1. C 2. 2B 3. OF 4. bench 5. bullpen with those categories, I'd reframe, based on how I think AA is viewing it, as: a) OF 2B c) bullpen d) bench e) C I don't think AA views catching an issue at all - it was good enough in 2014 and he's expecting a repeat, all for about $7M for that position.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 I think Alex would view 2B above the OF in terms of need.
