No doubt there will be more guys accepting their qualifying offers this year

No one wants to be the next Drew/Morales/Cruz. I mean, ultimately they all found jobs for a good part of the season, but no one wants to go in to ST unemployed.

Problem is the agents for the second tier guys all think their guys will get great deals. Last year it just didn't happen.

Cruz is going to get a huge deal from the Yankees. If money being even, I would take Nelson Cruz over Melky, obv, but Cruz will probably be getting a monster deal

Cruz will get big money per season in a short deal I suspect.

I would actually prefer Melky. He's 4 years younger at age ranges where it starts to really matter, and frankly overall is the better player imo. I wouldn't expect Cruz to have another year like he is this year.

Agreed

I was all for getting rid of Lind a couple years ago but I've changed my mind

You could do a lot worse for the money (7.5M with 1M buyout). I don't think you could replace his bat for that, especially when you essentially have to add 1M to the price you're paying the incoming free agent.

Spend any available $ on Melky, the middle infield and the bullpen - wherever you can get the best bang for the buck.

The team can handle Gose in center with his defense and speed but 3 of them is a killer. The back end of the bull pen that was an expected strength sucked and may be the easiest place to add wins if they resign Melky. I see Sanchez getting stuck in a bull pen role next year and that will hurt down the road a year.

Cruz has more power but Melky is just such a good all around hitter. And switch hits. He's a base hit machine. And we can probably retain him cheaper than Cruz would cost.

I don't even mind conceding Melky becoming primarily a DH after Lind's contract is up.

One other issue re the qualifying offers

Drew, Morales and Cruz are all exempt from that problem this year aren't they? Since they didn't play a full season for their new team? Or wait, did Cruz sign before game 1? I forget. For sure Morales and Drew signed after the season started.

In any case it will help their value this off season to not be tied to draft pick compensation.

I'm hoping melky just takes the qualifying offer. A long term deal scares me. Let him play year to year.

1 year on a QO would be cool with me

Cause we can always extend or convert him to a draft pick the year after too

1B: Encarnacion ($10M)

2B: Izturis ($3M)

3B: Lawrie ($3M)

SS: Reyes ($22M)

C: Navarro ($5M)

BC: Thole ($2M)

LF: Cabrera (FA-Resign-$12M)

RF: Bautista ($14M)

CF: Gose ($1M)

DH: Lind ($7.5M)

SP1: Buerhle ($19M)

SP2: Dickey ($12M)

SP3: Hutchison ($1M)

SP4: Stroman ($1M)

SP5: Sanchez ($1M)

RP1: Mcgowan ($4M)

RP2: Happ ($6.7M):

RP4: Loup ($2M)

RP5: Redmond ($1M)

RP6:

CL: Cecil ($2M)

BN1: Mayberry ($2M)

BN2: Valencia ($2M)

BN3:

I've made a few estimates for the arbitration players, but basically, we already have $133 million allocated for 2014.

That's assuming we bring back Lind and Happ, and re-sign Cabrera for $12 million.

That means we let Janssen, Morrow, Rasmus and Santos go.

So, if we stand pat and go with this lineup next year, we're going to have the following problems:

- Shortage of quality relief pitchers.

- Lack of depth in our starting rotation. Once the young arms falter, the cupboards are pretty bare.

- Not getting a lot of production out of second base or center field.

-No real closer (although one could develop).

I don't really see how the Jays fix this problem. They have several depth issues and not enough money to fix them.

I guess this is the problem when you commit a third of the salary to an oft-injured shortstop and a #3 rotation starter.

Sorry AG, but this JS already being covered in the BTS thread. I'll merge rather than delete so that your post is kept.

That Marlins trade...... what a colossal fail.

Oh yeah

Even just Josh Johnson instead of Alvarez last year

Never mind Reyes' horrendous contract

Buehrle... just not worth the dough. I get the distinct impression that was a relatively spontaneous trade (not very well thought out at all).

I think the Jays will let Melky go and use Pillar instead. I agree with most of you said except for the lack of starting rotation depth. Happ, Norris, Nolin, Gravemen provides adequate depth.

Pillar will probably end up giving me a stroke next year if he's playing everyday/every other day. He looks like a buffoon batting.

Gose, Sanchez, Stroman, Hutch, and Redmond will all be $0.5M (not $1M).

Loup will not reach 3+ YoS and will still be $0.5M unless he is a Super2, in that case it will be more like $1-$1.2M.

McGowan will not be retained.

Happ is questionable to be retained as well.

Lawrie and Valencia will be more like $1.5M.

Francisco is missing and will be around $2M.

Francisco will not be back next year. He's had like 5 PA in the last month, so that tells you how much the coaching staff thinks of him.

He probably wont be our worst hitter either if Goins and Gose play everyday. Pillar/Gose platoon would work somewhat if they do retain Melky.

What happened to Alex Rios' power??

Has gone from perennial 15-20 HR to 4 this year in 131 games

I suspect he gets bought out by Texas??

If so, anyone want him for 4th OF/platoon DH? He put up 141 wRC+ against lefties this year.

Wow, he's been awful. 90 wRC+ and both Steamer and ZiPS think he's below-average true talent. With his defense now likely below-average in RF, he might be done as a viable everyday player.

1 PA in September. A month or so I thought for sure he'd be tendered, now it looks unlikely.

Remember when Wilner told me that Moises Sierra is Alex Rios in the outfield? Good times.

I worry though that he could be one of those guys that Gibby and AA don't see eye to eye on.

Despite AA glowing about how they're always on the same page blah blah blah when he rehired him, I think there's been a fair bit of that going on this year.

Posted

For example, I think Gibby thought more of Kratz than AA did. IIRC he even came out and said at least once that he would like to have him, while he was playing in Buffalo.

But I think the opposite was true of Esmil Rogers and Moises Sierra, who Gibby played as little as possible after the first month.

Well he can only blame himself. Pitchers made adjustments and he failed to make any back, instead just swinging as hard as he can every pitch.

If you look at the bench composition with Lind at DH there just is no room for Fransisco even if his defense was OK and his K rate down . Defense was horrible and he can't hit the offspeed stuff.
