nothing but solid over the last few years

Except that now and the future we don't expect him to be very good. That's what the money goes towards, not past performance.

Any GM who gave Janssen and Rasmus QO,s would be laughed out of baseball. Realistically this team should be blown up this offseason which we all know won't happen unless a new president comes in and really cuts the budget.

Rustney Castillo? He could move to CF vs lefties with Reimold in left, and Gose could play center with Castillo in left vs righties.

I wish

You can't do that with every player. Some players you really have to keep around past age 26 or 27. There's no way any team could keep replacing 2-3 players evrey year with quality young and cheap replacements. The pipeline would never be that strong. At best you might be able to do that with 1 guy every year.

True.

But having guys hang around till retirement or late 30's for a team that needs every advantage it can get to contend isn't bright.

It's a fan appeaser.

Alex's job 24/7 is managing a baseball organization. He should have plans and contingency plans all over the place.

Gose in CF, and get a 4th OF who can play CF and preferably hit RH so Gose doesn't have to hit the toughest lefties. Craig Gentry's skill set would be perfect.

Drew Stubbs?

And more reliable than most of the other crap out there too. Casey gets a lot of flak but he's been nothing but solid over the last few years barring a few injury woes and the odd bit of rust sprinkled in. He'd be good to re-sign on a 2yr contract in the ballpark of 16-18M.

Eventually players breakdown and it's better to not be on the hook.

I'll say it again ! If Rasmus is on this team next year I will be very pissed . He should have been moved last offseason when his value peaked and we had no money and needed pitching

Same applies to Janssen, Santos, Delabar, Cecil...

True and I would never advocate an overpay for the sake of holding on to him but if we could get 2 years at a reasonable price I'd do it considering the available options and the market. Yeah his velocity sucks but that's never been his game anyways and I'm sure he's got at least 2 decent years left in the tank.

There's some decent old guys there that could close for another 1-2 years. Janssen's not a must keep.

Who do you like? Most of those guys didn't look appealing to me at all. Great list to browse though, I couldn't help but notice how many starters & set up men will be on the market. Also made me realize how thin the options are for 2B although there were a handful of SS options where we could push Reyes to 2B. Also couldn't believe Denorfia & Gomes are 4 years older than Melky, even Tony Gwynn jr is 2 years older than him. Sign that man stat!

Interesting tidbits in a Blair article.

http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/teams/toronto-blue-jays/aaron-sanchez-toronto-blue-jays-alex-anthopoulos-john-gibbons/

Janssen is eligible for free agency and has a hankering to return home to California. The list of long-term, free-agent deals for closers that have exploded in a team’s face is lengthy. Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos won’t commit long-term to Janssen – nor should he, since Janssen is short stuff-wise and has a razor-thin margin for error – despite the Blue Jays internal options not being very exciting. The Jays like Aaron Loup, their deceptive left-hander, in his current role. The organization doesn’t think Brett Cecil or Dustin McGowan have it inside them to close. Sergio Santos’ $6 million option won’t be picked up and while Brandon Morrow will get a short relief stint once (if?) his rehabilitation is over, his $10 million option for next season won’t be exercised.

I like what I see.

It's kind of like not sticking a fork in the socket.

Yeah, I'm pretty glad that Anthopoulos is managing to not colossally f*** this up.

I have been a supporter of Janssen returning at a reasonable contract, but not a QO. Good thing he is at least making this decision easier on the team this past month or so.

At his current level, a reasonable salary is like 600K + a bonus or two. Velo down to 89 and he's not fooling anybody.

He's like Josh Towers but in the bullpen

So did this all start with that stomach flu where he lost like 10 pounds? Was that the turning point?

It would be interesting to see his velo pre- and post-flu. Because he's at 89 on the season now, but he might actually be sitting 87 or 88 right now.
