Good interview, but it not all players moved at the deadline went for roster players (Prado etc). Either he's full of s***, or nobody wanted the prospects / AA didn't want to trade them.

I think the two deals that made the most sense for the Jays were the two Yankees acquisitions that happened before the deadline, Headley and McCarthy. Neither of those brought back a return the Jays couldn't match comfortably. The fact that they missed out on those AND did the underwhelming Valencia trade instead AND did nothing else at the deadline, leads to the overal dissapointment more than the deadline deals themselves (Prado for instance wasn't cheap at all when you factor the salary the Yankees took on). Going back to the offseason, lots of opportunities seem to have beem missed. The deadline is just the cherry on the sunday.

I think McCarthy in particular would have been a good acquisition. If Hutch's inconsistency are the result of an actual thing, having Redmond and Nolin as a 1-2 depth combo is not all that encouraging.

What do you view as comparables in the Toronto org for the assets the Yankees used to obtain Headley and McCarthy?

Good question. I have to admit I threw that out pretty carelessly without thiking it through.

McCarthy: Vidal Nuno + 1 million $ (Maybe Hendricks but more likely Nolin)

Headley: Solarte + De Paula (An infielder, rumour mill says Francisco and I can believe that. Francisco and a hard thrower, maybe Tirado?)

I'm glad we didn't get Prado. That contract is s***. Not paying that guy 11 million for 2015 and 2016 f*** that. Hes a solid player in no way a difference maker.

I agree. If they want to get someone, get a starter or reliever or otherwise f*** it.

I know Nolin has been injured for quite a bit of the season but what are people's opinion on his future here? Does he add to our prospect of pitchers who could make a impact (Sanchez, Hoffman, Osuna) or is he someone that should be a bull pen arm/trade piece (assuming someone would want him..).

I believe it was "Francisco and 2 'lesser' prospects" as the rumour. Headley was the only player moved that I felt made a tonne of sense for the Jays, but you're giving up a lot of control in 3 players for a few months of Headley, who, as much as I really like him and wanted him here, was definitely having a down year.

Headley > Francisco for sure, but I'm not sold that the value was there (or that Headley was the piece that puts us into the playoffs/world series.)

I feel like Valencia/Franco will give the Jays a lot more value than Headley will give to the Yankees. Our platoon only cost Kratz and Hendriks, and there isn't a big injury concern there. Feel like Jays made out better overall.

McCarthy is the only thing I consider a mistake, but every time McCarthy ever gets moved and it isn't to the Jays, I feel like it's a mistake.

It's trite and generally awful to say, but it sort of feels like Reimold was a trade deadline get (and I'm quite happy with him, if he can stay healthy) and getting Lawrie/EE/Lind back in the next few weeks means our team will be getting an August boost that no other team matched @ the deadline...

I honestly feel that this is a playoff team as constructed, so I wouldn't tinker too much (if you can upgrade on Happ or Dickey and maybe upgrade in the pen I'm pretty okay with it.)

yeah, as much as I preferred Headley, I wouldn't give up Francisco who remains cheap/controllable ++...

now AA moves for Valencia who has upside, cheap & controllable...

it's not Headley but it's also 2 good alternatives...and they both have pop...

again, the heat was off AA after the jays came storming out of the all-star break...things worked out for AA for now but imagine if the jays kept up their losing ways and we're talking about how no moves in July were at all?

Winning solves a lot of issues

I tend to agree - not an elite team but good enough to make it. My big concern at this stage is Hutch.

It's hard to put a number on it but I feel like there's a pretty significant loss of value when you have to use two roster spots to do one job. Flipping Francisco into an everyday player with defensive value like Headly makes a ton of sense to me intuitively and I feel like there's a great value gain there (it makes it easier to roster other good defensive players like Kratz or Gose for one thing). I feel like the Valencia/Francisco type platoon where neither player can provide defensive value is crappy roster construction. You have too many players like that and you end up fielding a poor defensive teams with little bench flexibility and your run prevention suffers to the point that it starts cancelling out the gains made through the platoon advantage.

I don't see us running the board or anything, but I think the Jays have a shot at the division, and an excellent shot at a wildcard if the Orioles keep playing the way they are. Getting to the playoffs is the first step (I don't think we'd be the best team in the playoffs by any means, but in short series anything can happen...)
