TORONTO – Brandon Morrow threw off the mound Thursday for the first time since tearing a tendon sheath in his index finger May 2, an important point of progress in his painstaking rehabilitation of the injury.

The Toronto Blue Jays right-hander threw roughly 30 pitches during the session, and came away pleased. He’ll continue to throw bullpens every other day for the next while before further steps are mapped out.

“It was good,” Morrow said of the session. “I still had the tape job on my finger so it’s not completely there, but the bullpen was fine. With just this little tape here I feel pretty free with my finger so I was able to loosely go through my mechanics and feel the slope of the mound and everything was pretty good.”

Morrow remains a tantalizing wild card for the Blue Jays with the potential to provide a significant boost to the rotation or bullpen, or not return at all. To this point there have been no setbacks, even if his possible return may be taking a bit longer than expected.

“Everything has been positive,” said Morrow. “Real slow, but always going in the right direction. …

“I felt better with my command and just going through my mechanics than I thought I would (on the mound). My finger felt pretty good, so I was encouraged by it.”

Key tests for Morrow will come once he begins throwing without any tape on his finger and the tendon sheath must hold without any help.

“I’ve been over the last week doing my throwing program and then taking off the tape and throwing some more after that, and that’s felt good,” said Morrow. “It actually feels better after I take the tape off, just freeing up the finger a little bit. It feels more natural.”

I'm not getting my hopes up.

I know I'm in the minority here but i would LOVE to see Brandon Morrow back sooner then later. I just have 0 expectations he's going to be able to pitch this year. He could provide a nice boost though if by some miracle the baseball gods keep his finger/forearm/shoulder/oblique/vagina together.

it depends which Morrow comes back, the pitch to contact one (No f***ing thanks) or the aggressive one

Man I had completely forgotten about Morrow. Even if he's a far cry from vintage Morrow, the team could really use him for extra pitching depth. There's really nothing behind the current group at the moment.

The want the one that strikes everyone the f*** out.

we saw that guy one start....came out and struck out 5 of the first 6 hitting 97 and I remember thinking where the f*** has this morrow been hiding...sign me up for that morrow...would love for him to come around again.

next week hutch will have a great start and happ will have a bad one and you will want to get rid of happ

Go look at the season starts for both. Happ has been a lot more dominant than Hutch.

Please elaborate. You made the claim, present the "facts"

exactly what stats are you looking at? Hutch has had a couple bad outings, but he has much better control and he's 23. Hutch has a 3.8 FIP and a 4.06 xfip. Happ has a 4.18 FIP and a 4.31 xFIP. Yes, that included 5 innings of relief work for Happ. We also have Happ's career numbers we can look at, and he's 31.

Morrow will never throw another inning for the Jays.

Considering your track record of making bold statements, I think it's pretty much a lock that he'll get at least 100 innings now.

Pretty sure you said the same thing to me when I said Santos' time here is done.

Aging, broken down diabetic. He's done. Reliever or bust at this point.

Pretty much seals the deal that he'll go on to win a Cy Young.

Put him in the bullpen. He is a better version of McGowan

Starting should not be his forte anymore. If they do start him,its just a matter of time before another serious injury.

Maybe, but a think a few Morrow starts in place of Hutch could be the breather Hutch needs.

That said, I don't know what to think with Brandon anymore. I really wish it could all come together for him but this all seems like it's becoming the wanna-be-feel-good story that McGowan's comeback as a starter was. Anything, even some big BP innings, is a bonus at this point. Sanchez isn't the end-all solution for RH velocity from the BP.

We have two months of baseball left and this was his FIRST TIME throwing off a mound in three months.

It's going to take weeks to build any type of strength back up/rehab assignments, etc. He always has some type of "setback" as well. The timeline is just too tight.

Take him to the glue factory.

If Morrow can pitch he will be in the pen.

He could be solid reliever that could give us innings if we need. I think he would be very helpful down there. However he has to stay healthy.

Of course he can stay healthy. HE's NOT injury prone! He said so himself...

10M option next year.

He's done as a Jay unless they bring him back at a huge discount (unlikely).

Oh he won't be back next year. I am talking if he is ready September. He would help our Bullpen out.

Won't hold my breath but you're right. Might be able to get a few decent weeks out of the pen from him (but in reality that'll be like ~10 innings of work... Not even worth discussing).

10 quality innings vs 10 crappy innings in September could be the difference in making the playoffs or not....I'm not convinced if Morrow would provide quality or crappy innings in relief, but you need good 7th, 8th and 9th inning guys to protect leads down the stretch.
