Yankees Nearing Deal For Chase Headley

By Steve Adams [July 22, 2014 at 12:01pm CDT]

The Yankees are in the process of finalizing a deal to acquire Chase Headley from the Padres, reports Jack Curry of the YES Network (on Twitter).

Headley, a lifetime member of the Padres, is hitting just .229/.296/.355 with seven homers this season, though he’s playing outstanding defense at third base, per both UZR/150 (+19.7) and Defensive Runs Saved (+7). Headley is earning $10.53MM in 2014 and is eligible for free agency following the season.

AA too busy deciding whether or not to get tzatziki sauce on his gyro

This is why I believe the Jays have no payroll space. This trade couldve been done last month. SD just wanted to clear the salary. You couldve given them back a bag of balls.

Yankees Acquire Chase Headley

By Steve Adams [July 22, 2014 at 12:11pm CDT]

The Yankees have acquired Chase Headley from the Yankees, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports (Twitter links). The Yankees will send Yangervis Solarte and minor league right-hander Rafael De Paula to the Padres in return for Headley and $1MM.

Not sure he can afford sauce on his gyro.

Well played

Maybe AA was hoping Santos was claimed, so that Headley could've been traded for?

I think this is very telling, in that Rogers has said no more money to AA.

Ok so this means the Jays are getting either Prado or Rios or nothing?

Prado is still the one I really want

But this feels like the off season when pitcher after pitcher went elsewhere and we watched a dwindling number and eventually got no one

I'm guessing he gets no one

The Blue Jays will do one of two things:

1) Absolutely nothing (a la last offseason)

2) A batshit retarded overpay big splash trade for someone like Cliff Lee (a la Marlins/Mets deals)

There is no middle ground.

Solarte is not an insignificant piece

Yea, that's not a bad get. Fringe starter/solid bench guy under control for the next 5+ years.

Obviously not a star but pretty good for a guy who you only control for 2 more months and may also still be hurt.

+ De Paula, who's a fringe T100 prospect.

If they get nobody, we may as well stop caring. Like you said once again it's quite clear what holes the team has: 2B and starter... I am surprised, these are the same holes they had in the offseason.

The yankees really don't care, they signed Solarte as a FA, and have quite a lot of infielders they signed recently. Solarte can be replaced, but Headley I'm sure they want for a push for this year. I think they see the freefall the BJs are in, and still think they can hit the playoffs.

Yup. Even though he's an arm at the lower levels (it's hard to project much value from any of those guys), he's got a decent enough profile too.

Good work by San Diego.
