comeon sense Verified Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Since we can bring back Gibbons why dont we bring back Buck Martinez,Or someone who has won,and has a rep. Someone with intensity, who the players have to answer to. They are not making good baseball moves right now.Yes they are having bad luck, and yes the manager is also affected. When you look at who else is managing in the East, they are all better. No Tanaka for NY,and we all wait for them to collapse. The one thing we should be doing is adding as much speed as possible. There should be no big concern as well, for batting righties against lefties,or vice versa. H:cool:ow about some brushback pitches for the opposition. Can anyone remember the last time we did that on purpose?
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 The team is performing about exactly as expected. It's not the field manager's fault they aren't doing better.

Everyone here loves "Gibby"...it's the only thing they and AA agree on. He's pretty much give up on his own players, so I suspect some of them have tuned him out. On the other hand, the team's missing 3 of its top 6 hitters so you can't expect much else. He's also got AA's complete trust and ear. He wanted Mottola out and Seitzer in and he got it. The Santos DFA is clearly at his request. On the other hand, I don't own the team so...
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 This same team was expected to win it all last year, and this year when we were balling, everyone was not shocked. Not really. In both 2013 and 2014 they looked like a possible ~85-win true talent 25-man roster with awful AAA depth. Give the same roster to a proper FO and they could probably win 90 with health. This FO has no idea how to supplement its talent with useful complementary pieces, and that combined with injuries have resulted in poor performance.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 This same team was expected to win it all last year, and this year when we were balling, everyone was not shocked. It wasn't the same team though. Last year's expectations were partly based on JJ and Dickey being #2's or even #1's as well as relative health. Reality has set in for this year so not many expected much more than a .500 team. We'll see what happens.

Anyone who thought a AAA lineup and 2nd tier rotation was gonna keep this team above .500 is f***ing dreaming.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 This same team was expected to win it all last year, and this year when we were balling, everyone was not shocked. Sadly both years gaping holes were overlooked by the fans and expectations were way too high.

I certainly don't love "Gibby"... he was a failure the first time around and hasn't gotten any better the second time around. As far as I'm concerned, he can get the hell out too alongside Beeston and AA.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Sadly both years gaping holes were overlooked by the fans and expectations were way too high. Wasn't just the fans....the oddsmakers and money in LV were also on the Jays 2013. Not for this year...this year they look to be right.

Not for this year...this year they look to be right. I wasn't a fan of this team contending for anything other than a WC in either year. It's not like the rotation, or 'pen are special. And the lineup has had holes at critically important positions, yet people continue to believe. It's sickening.

I had to read that twice to see if you seriously suggested bringing back buck f***ing Martinez. Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 We should bring back that dude who lied about being a Vietnam vet. There was a dude who pretended to get results!

He probably wouldnt have much better luck than Gibby. Enough of retreads, but it wouldn,t piss me off either. Can anyone think of anyone else who would be a good fit for this team ?

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 We should bring back that dude who lied about being a Vietnam vet. There was a dude who pretended to get results! Tim Johnson, 88 wins. Sadly still the high water mark for this team post-93 WS. I think back to 1998 and all salivate over the potential of that roster. Too bad they couldn't put it all together is the following years. Comparing 1998 to now is night and day. http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/TOR/1998.shtml
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Wasn't just the fans....the oddsmakers and money in LV were also on the Jays 2013. Those are basically the same thing. House odds are shaped to protect the house from windfalls by getting as close as possible to a 50/50 split of over/under bets. They are predictive of betting trends not of results.

As far as I'm concerned, he can get the hell out too alongside Beeston and AA. Agreed. I don't necessarily think Gibbons is the problem, but it is disappointing to me that the last two times the Jays went for it (2006-08, 2013) it was with Gibbons as manager and both times the team underachieved. Cito Gaston got a team with Roy Halladay and a bunch of below replacement level scrubs to win more games in a tough division in 2009 than the 2013 and probably 2014 teams will win in a much more balance division (at least this year). At some point you stop admiring his use of platoons and start wondering why all of his teams don't live up to expectations. It's certainly not all of his fault, and in this year's case it's entirely on Alex (or Rogers) for not adding to the team, but I'm sick of having a good manager that doesn't win, while a guy who sleeps in the dugout like Cito can get 85 wins out of a team that wanted to rebuild. I know I'm going to get heat for this, as "manager doesn't matter" and all that jazz, but whatever. Fire Alex, Beeston, and Gibbons. Don't rebuild, just retool and get a manager with some form of track record to come in (like Cleveland did with Francona).

Ok...if we accept LV bookies just follow the fans and trends not predicting results (which seems odd) Id also say a significant number of talking heads and so called experts also called them in 2013.

It's amazing how the talking heads ignored the fact we were sending out 3rd tier/BU catchers & 2B in both years, had a poor bench, a non-playoff type rotation and a lightening in a bottle, scratched together 'pen. I'd rather come to my own conclusions, before what I accept from analysts as gospel.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Ok...if we accept LV bookies just follow the fans and trends not predicting results (which seems odd) Id also say a significant number of talking heads and so called experts also called them in 2013. If there's an overwhelming majority of betters who bet one way, that leaves the casino vulnerable to a huge payout so they set up the odds to avoid that. Nothing odd about it, it's the business model.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Why does it seem odd? Oddsmakers/bookies understand that betting is for fools, in the long-term. You don't try to predict the outcome, if you're looking to minimize your risk and make as close to a steady, reliable living as possible. You simply set yourself up to get equal bets on either side of the coin, so that you don't win money or lose money on the bets themselves, but instead just take the rake/vig/whatever. You don't try to outsmart the bettors ... they have outsmarted themselves by betting in the first place. There are people in LV who handicap and develop probability scenarios that set odds to try and make money from people who bet. They don't base this off of fans opinions...they do it off of assessing teams and their opposition factually and statistically.
