Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2014 Author Posted July 21, 2014 Ever see Infernal Affairs, the original version. It's not as well acted or as dark as the American version but it has a tidier, more credible script. The Departed > Infernal Affairs The Ring (Asian) > The Ring (Naomi Watts) Ju-on > The Grudge
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 The way he answered that question makes me believe what Griffin tweeted was true. I'd say Elliot's vague, unqualified tweet has more to prove than the FO of a $130+ baseball team. Who knows what context AA declined a salary-heavy move? Unless a context is provided of AA pre-empting any negotiation with "I have no more money" Elliot's tweet should be under scrutiny and no more believable than AA's corporate hedging. What the tweet does do, however, is put AA in a situation where he can neither confirm or deny it. Confirming it admits failure to the fanbase. Declining it sets up unreal expectations among that same base: "If no salary restrictions, why not Cliff Lee?" It's an especially touchy subject to broach publicly while still navigating the whirlwind of a trade deadline.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 The Departed > Infernal Affairs The Ring (Asian) > The Ring (Naomi Watts) I basically feel the opposite way. I found The Ring scary and Ringu not at all scary. I found Infernal Affairs if not better in all respects, at least better in its important aspects. I really don't understand why they changed the story so much especially the ending which was perfect in the original. If they had kept the same story, they could have surpassed it with better production values (mind you the schizophrenic editing in The Departed is also an issue). I haven't seen Ju-On or The Grudge but nobody seems to like The Grudge so you're probably right about that one. On a side note, the Ring 2 is one of my most hated sequels of all time. If you thought The Ring sucked than I can only imagine what you would think of The Ring 2 (same director as Ringu incidentally).
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 As much as I want rival WC teams to throw out a white flag, any ~.500 team is still in it. On the other hand, Fangraphs just posted a sobering article (for KC fans*) on the reality of the situation: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/its-time-for-the-royals-to-trade-james-shields/ *That sounds like I think KC fans are drunk with optimism, but in reality they're probably more bitter and disgruntled than Jays fans. We should still feel bad for them though, because even though we both root for decades-impotent baseball teams at least we don't have to live our lives in Kansas City.

Well, at least their weather overall is better than ours... or is it? Not sure.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 At least AA looks like he slimmed down a bit. Laying off the Spanakopita I guess

Not as cold, significantly less snow. The summers, though, are disgustingly hot and humid. And there really isn't much of a spring or fall.

kcjaysfan Verified Member Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 Holy long time no post. Yeah, I wound up having to take a class last term when I though I'd be only doing research/writing. So with the class, trying to get a paper finished and submitted to a journal, and doing research for my thesis, I didn't have a whole lot of time to post.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 I'm hearing that Sanchez is off of the "untouchable" list. Good, nobody should ever be "untouchable" when it comes deals. AA should consider all options/offers for any player(s). I still remember my reaction to the Carter/Alomar deal all that time ago. Didn't like it at first because the guys we gave up I liked and they were productive. Turned out ok.
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Bad source (Bowden, ESPN) IMO but here you go... Would you trade Nolin/Lugo for Headley?? Player: Chase Headley | 3B/LF | San Diego Padres "What would it take to get ..." Possible destinations: Toronto Blue Jays, Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees The 30-year-old Headley will be a free agent after this season, and although he has a modest slash line for the season -- .229/.296/.355 -- he has batted .323 in the month of July, and his stock is soaring as the trade deadline approaches. Here's more on what it would take for these three contenders to land him: Toronto Blue Jays Why? The Blue Jays would like to keep Brett Lawrie at second base long-term, so third base remains their biggest positional need. The Jays also need better balance in their lineup, and with Headley being a switch-hitter, that would improve them in that area as well. Who? Left-handed pitcher Sean Nolin and shortstop Dawel Lugo should get the deal done. Nolin finally reached the majors with the Blue Jays in May 2013 and struggled in his first start, getting knocked out in the second inning after giving up six runs in a loss to the Orioles. However, he pitched well at three different stops in the minor leagues this year, making 12 starts with a 3.52 ERA, a 1.34 WHIP and a strikeout rate of 8.7 per 9 innings. While 19-year-old Lugo shows 15-20 homer power in batting practice, he has yet to show it in games because he struggles to hit pitches on the outside part of the plate -- a weakness he'll be able to overcome in time. He has soft hands and, combined with a strong arm, can make plays in the hole. He has average speed at best, but he makes up for it with good jumps and angles off the bat. Those two make for a fair package for Headley. Will it happen? There's a good chance. The Blue Jays are going to make a move, and Headley is definitely a logical target.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2014 Author Posted July 22, 2014 Bad source (Bowden, ESPN) IMO but here you go... Nolin and Lugo for Headley? Bowden is a stupid moron.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Holy long time no post. He was waiting for a question about KC's weather
TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 I'd love to hear the Jays reasoning for wanting to keep Lawrie at 2B long term.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 (edited) I'd love to hear the Jays reasoning for wanting to keep Lawrie at 2B long term. I don't think that's necessarily their preferred plan. That's just what this blogger wrote. Though truthfully it also might be the best option for the last 62 games of 2014 given who is available via trade currently. Edited July 22, 2014 by G-Snarls

kcjaysfan Verified Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 He was waiting for a question about KC's weather Even though I wasn't posting, I would read through some of the threads to keep somewhat up to date on the Jays. But really, I was just waiting for that one question to bring me back.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 I couldn't have said it better myself. Good to see you again Did you bring, by any chance, James Shields with you in your back pocket?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2014 Author Posted July 22, 2014 AA "We're in a holding pattern for the next five or six days," 6 straight losing games please!!

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 AA "We're in a holding pattern for the next five or six days," ! Yep. He was just on Prime Time Sports saying this. But he says it's other teams waiting to decide if they're selling or not. Sounds like AA is definitely interested in buying.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 And stop wishing for the team to lose!
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 I'm worried that said team is Tampa Hoping it's Philadelphia
shortstop Verified Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Jays r close to the brink IMO Season can really go downhill next month & really out of a playoff spot I think most would in that case welcome a blow up & start over, prob not with AA at the helm
