Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Smart moves. Again, it's too bad they're hanging around in the standings right now, or they could deal either or both of those guys and get a little organizational depth in return. They likely won't be QO'd, either. I'd give a QO to Melky. He'll at least land a 2 or 3 year deal somewhere. Rasmus would accept it though, so I just wouldn't even bother and just let him walk.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 14, 2014 Author Posted July 14, 2014 Colby has totally killed his value this year. There's still 40% of the season left but wow he's been terrible.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I was actually thinking this weekend that there's a real scenario Colby comes back on a one- or two-year deal. Nobody's giving him four years and $60M+ as it stands currently. He just doesn't look like an impact player. You can bring up his 2013 WAR all you want but there are many indicators that's not actually who he is. He's a league-average hitter and league-average defender whose tantalizing power leaves him prone to being overrated. Melky is similar. When you're a bad defense, mediocre power corner bat, it's hard to rack up value. Melky's hitting about as well as you can expect from him this year yet isn't more than an average regular. A QO would significantly hamper his multi-year market.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Rasmus is s*** right now, I don't think Jays make the QO.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 14, 2014 Author Posted July 14, 2014 Another good season and Colby could have had BJ Upton money Now he will get Nelson Cruz money (Yes there's a bit of hyperbe there)
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Another good season and Colby could have had BJ Upton money Now he will get Nelson Cruz money (Yes there's a bit of hyperbe there) Colby would have had to repeat last year but with more sustainable peripherals to get BJ Upton money. And that was always a long-shot. I think Colby would get 3/30 on the open market and Melky 3/27. If they opted for one-year deals, probably 1/11 each. They're not great players, guys.
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I think either one would accept a QO. Melky was close to being an all-star. In his mind, I bet he's worth at least 2 or 3 guaranteed years.

NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 10 months ago most were saying Colby could get 5/75 Glad we didn't do that Some were but I always thought that was overblown. BJ Upton had a much better track record going into FA. At the start of the season I could see 4/56. Now that's not probably going to happen.
bzapple Verified Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Melky was close to being an all-star. In his mind, I bet he's worth at least 2 or 3 guaranteed years. Not in addition to losing a draft pick though. Between his limited skillset, health problems in 2013, and suspension in 2012, he's exactly the type of player who could end up in Stephen Drew/Kendrys Morales limbo.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 14, 2014 Author Posted July 14, 2014 I'm don't trust Jeff Blair at all. Yeah me neither really. He loves saying something like this and then will refuse to expand on it. But he loves to let you think he knows something. It's annoying. I don't doubt he may have a friend in the organization and he hears some things. But I never trust stuff like this.

NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I would disagree the Jays should look to retain him, and I also think that if they really don't want them back, the risk of them accepting a QO is too high to allow them to extend one to them in hopes of getting a pick out of the deal. Neither has done much to change my impressions of them before the season began. They are who I thought they were. Or something. You just know that if we retain either of them it'll be for an overpay. Why not look at the other free agent options or make a trade. I'm annoyed by the "we'll be stuck with Pillar and Gose if these guys leave" mentality. This FO clearly doesn't believe in those guys enough to let them start 2015 as a regular. New guys will be brought in and they're a good chance they'll be as good or better than Melky/Colby.

Nox Verified Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Why on earth would the front office say anything to Blair regarding Colby and Melky's futures at this point? That makes no sense. Sounds like Blair is probably just making s*** up (even if he's right).

Fans worry that guys like Sierra, Goins, JPA and Thames will make the opening day 25-man, and the team ends up finding solid replacements so it doesn't happen. No reason at all to believe this management team would give a spot to a replacement level talent.
bzapple Verified Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Why do some of you think Melky isn't worth a QO? He's worth every penny, IMO. I wouldn't mind an extension at less AAV. With Reyes' salary going up next year, the team can't afford to handcuff themselves by giving Melky a pay raise as well. Agree with the second part of your post, I'd be fine with basically a repeat of the 2/16 he originally got, given the weak market for outfielders this year.
