Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2014 Author Posted July 4, 2014 what would Beltre cost? can't imagine Rangers would go for it just for a salary dump & type B prospects in return... Sanchez, Lawrie and maybe Norris, and PTBNL (Jeff Hoffman)

shortstop Verified Member Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 I usually think it's a mistake to put too much stock on what a guy does when you see him in person rather then what they've done in their carreer (see AA going to Japan to scout Darvish) but Headley is a guy you would definitely have to scout to evaluate his physical fitness. If he can still give you great defense at 3B, it's a great play because at worst he fills a hole and any offensive regression you get is gravy. Potentially a lot of gravy. b/w Prado & Beltre, Headley would likely come the cheapest...jays should only do it for a type B or Type B & C prospect... 2 more weeks & the trading scene will heat up...

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2014 Author Posted July 4, 2014 The Blue Jays are “heavily scouting” Diamondbacks infielders Aaron Hill and Martin Prado, as well as Padres third baseman Chase Headley, ESPN’s Jim Bowden reports (Twitter link). The Jays were known to be interested in Headley, though the two Arizona infielders are new additions to Toronto’s search for help at either second or third base. The problem with this trio of players, as Bowden observes, is that all three carry large salaries and are in the midst of disappointing seasons. Headley is owed a little over $5MM for the remainder of the year but is a free agent this winter, whereas Hill and Prado are both under contract through 2016. Hill is owed approximately $29.3MM over the remaining 2.5 years of his deal and is hitting just .248/.285/.368 with six homers through 337 plate appearances this year. The last time Hill hit that poorly was during the 2010-11 seasons when he was, ironically, playing for the Jays. After being dealt to the D’Backs in August 2011, Hill regained his stroke and posted an .860 OPS over 1030 PA in 2012-13. Prado, meanwhile, is hitting only .268/.313/.360 with three home runs over 351 PA. He has played mostly at his preferred third base spot this year, though he also has a lot of experience as a left fielder or second baseman. Prado is owed around $27.3MM through the 2016 season. Toronto is known to be looking for help at either second or third base, with the idea that Brett Lawrie (when he returns from the DL) will man the other position. Given Lawrie’s fielding ability at third, Hill would seem like the more natural fit since Prado is much better defensively at third (career 4.4 UZR/150) than at second (-7.9 UZR/150). It’s possible the Jays might also prefer Hill due to his familiarity with playing on the Rogers Centre turf, though that’s just my speculation.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 Fox Sports: "The Yanks have been connected to Headley often over the last couple years, and they're evidently still interested even though the third baseman is hitting just .204/.293/.327 this season. Headley recently admitted that he expects to have to deal with a herniated disc in his back for the rest of the year, but it's unclear if that will give the Bombers pause. The third baseman is making $10.525 million this season and will be a free agent this winter." "According to reports, the Jays and other interested clubs will have representatives on hand to watch Headley this weekend. Set to hit free agency after the season, it may be best for the Padres to flip the third baseman at the deadline for the best possible package they can get, rather than letting him walk away for nothing."
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 can we please get a RH bat, i'm getting tired of watching these AAA scrubs whenever we face a lefty. is jonny gomes available?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2014 Author Posted July 5, 2014 2 years, 7 wins and 7 injuries, including a current one that may require back surgery. Bring him on board! Headley with a tumour on his back is better option that Juan Francisco and/or Tolleson.
jayswin11 Verified Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Let the Yankees over pay for Headley. HE's had one good year that's it. We're better off with Hill or Prado and that's not saying a lot. We could give up a lot and get Beltre, take a shot on a guy like McCarthy maybe. We could go with what we have, but I don't like that option at all. What about telling Bautista "Sorry man but you need to play 3B" We put him at third and get on OF (LF or RF), we could always move Melky to RF. Might be cheaper to go that route.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Jays probably can't afford Prado or Hill so Headley may be it and that's fine as long as healthy enough. I'm certainly not expecting any of the holes to be addressed in the next 27 days when they had all off season to do so, but couldn't do a thing.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 (edited) Would the Rangers do a Sanchez, Nay, C prospect for Beltre. Seems like a fair deal but my thinking is the Rangers would have to be wow'd to move him. Edited July 5, 2014 by burlingtonbandit
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Prado certainly doesn't seem like a bad target for the rest of the season. Not a fan of the contract though and I think the Dbacks won't want to take back salary and will still want a decent prospect.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Prado hits lefties better. 106 wRC+ in 2014 and 117 wRC+ for his career. Defense is better at 3rd then 2nd. He would be useful aslong as we don't give up much. McCarthy + Prado would be helpful to us.

Would McCarthy be a throw in and maybe send a prospect if they'd take RR? Probably wishful thinking on them taking RR, but one can dream.

I didn't even think of that but that would be a pretty good way to get them to take money on the deal. Prado + McCarthy for Mitch Nay, Nolin and Romero.
flafson Verified Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Prado is bad at 2B and alright at 3B, i guess it could work.

I think it would be interesting to figure out what the A's gave up for Shark and what they gave up to get Hammel as well as it could give us an idea as to what the going rate would be for David Price and for guys like McCarthy, Kennedy and other rentals. As far as RR goes, who knows really, but I don't think he can be traded while injured so maybe as a PTNL.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Prado maybe not my first choice but he'd be perfectly acceptable .287/.355/.448 OPS .803 lifetime vs LHP And positive defensive value throughout a career exclusively in the National League Also, plenty of positional flexibility The more I think about it the more sense he makes actually Allright, get R' done AA
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Arizona already made a trade today I bet they deal Prado soon if they're going to

Although he hasn't performed very well this season he has still hit lefties pretty well and is a above average defender at 3rd base. I wonder if the Dbacks trade him straight up for Nay. I think its a sellers market and while the value may be off we are going to still have to give up a decent prospect for an upgrade.

It makes a lot of sense for us. I just don't want it to cost any of our pitching prospects from our op 10, and I don't think it will.
pickoff22 Verified Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 At the time most were thrilled to move him. Hill looked pathetic at the plate his last season with us. Booed constantly. I sure was happy about it.....not thrilled with KJ obviously, but was happy to see his tenure with us come to an end

I just hope they can get something done now because with Lawrie out a 3rd baseman can be the difference of a win until he is back.
