We could have just signed a FA starter or 2B this off season so that we only needed one of those things instead of 2.

Just sayin'...

Ugh.

I still haven't fully gotten over the Ervin Santana thing yet.

I would much rather hold onto what's left of our farm and cross our fingers..or give up those 3 players for a pitcher with 3 or 4 years of control. Something like the Latos deal a few years ago.

Yup. I'd rather go for a cheaper SP and a solid 2b/SS acquisition, but we've been saying this since last year.

AA would be a complete moron and would be fleeced once again. I hope he learned about over paying for a NL arm. Shark is a #3 in the AL and would have an ERA in the 3.5-4 range.

Pass and laughable for those three prospects. Pompey will be pure gold.

Like others suggested, may as well get a proven AL winner in Price for the cost.

Breaking news: Jays traded Sanchez, Norris, Pompey for Samardzija and Valbuena....... 3 weeks later Samardzija required Tommy John Surgery

These trade threads stress me out. I normally don't keep up with our overall farm system, so the only players I hear about are our bigger profile prospects. So I never know if we have a prospect that replaces guys like Norris or Sanchez.

You could argue Hoffman next year would replace one of them, but the fact that Sanchez and Norris are at AA or above makes it more difficult to be replaced as the next waive of arms in the system is in the lower minors.

Like several keep saying, should've spent/overspent in the off season to avoid having to further weaken the farm system. The system is actually poised to get a nice influx of talent with Hoffman, Pentecost and Sean Reid-Foley drafted earlier this month, but dealing away the guys at the upper levels would be a big blow.

Yup, he should overpay for an AL pitcher instead....

Sounds to me like RA. Dickey all over again without the extension.

Samsdsdsk is a better pitcher than Dickey and we aren't giving up two top 50 prospects for him.

Thanks.

Is there an effective way to assign a dollar value (or range even) to a prospect like Sanchez...a blended value, so to speak, based on probability/metrics/whatever...so that you can compare how costly a propects heavy trade would be compared to a free agent signing?

It's going to take more than them 3 to get both of them.

I know, but my point was I would rather trade what's left of the farm for elite players than mid rotation starters.

We'll see at the end of the season when the new lists come out, but Norris will be close, especially if he continues to pitch well at AA.

However, when you add Pompey to the mix, who has arguably move up into the top 100, you're giving up a nice package. Shark is also gonna be a FA in 1.5 seasons and has no interest in signing an extension.

I wouldn't have made the Dickey trade either so...

Samardzija is better pitcher now, but.............."Dickey the CY award winner last season for 2 prospects" - Dickey's value was high very high after that title.

I've heard Norris is on the bubble of top 50, so that's 2 right there plus Pompey....ughh, I'm feeling ill.

Barreto could hit the top-70

I wouldn't call Shark a mid-rotation starter, but I get what you're saying.

Samardzija

2012: 27 : 3.0 fWAR

2013: 28 : 2.8 fWAR

Also, who gives a f*** if Shark is signed through 2015. A free agent can be signed in the off season, plus Nolin has a solid shot at cracking the rotation next year.

DON'T DO IT AA

Disagree. 3.21 xFIP ( That's league and park adjusted) Shark is a very good pitcher.

Dickey had the same numbers before the trade also. You can't trust those projections when you're involving a league change.

K............thanks.

Samardzija

2012: 27 : 3.0 fWAR

Sanchez throwing balls can put 2fWAR season next year.

Sanchez, Norris and Pompey for Shark is overpay; Cubs should to add Alcantara

We all agree that Sanchez, Norris and Pompey would be an overpay. That doesn't mean that Shark isn't very good though. There's no reason to believe shark is a 2 fWAR pitcher going forward.

That's a steep price for a pitcher that is a free agent after next year. He's not helping the Cubs make the playoffs, so they have no reason to hold onto him. I'd include one of those prospects + other lesser ones.

It is a seller's market. The Cubs will get at least two stud prospects for Shark from someone.

That's way, way too much for a year and a half of a number 2 starter.

Options like McCarthy and Kennedy are getting more attractive all the time.
