Lugbauer has been a heavy hitter this year for Arlington after earning league MVP honors as a junior. He is batting .424 (28-for-66) with 26 runs, 23 RBIs, eight doubles, a triple and eight home runs.

 

What the scouts say: Scouts like the pop in his bat. He has also shown the ability to play strong defense behind the plate.

 

Where he will go: Should go in the top 10 rounds.

Adelphi University junior outfielder Cliff Brantley was selected in the 19th round by the Toronto Blue Jays in today's MLB Draft.

 

The 5-foot-9 Port Richmond HS product was a semifinalist for the Tino Martinez Award given to the top NCAA Division II baseball player. He batted .401 during the spring season.

 

Brantley played two seasons at Wagner College before transferring to Adelphi. He appeared in 50 games with 20 starts for the Seahawks of the Northeast Conference.

 

His father, right-handed pitcher Cliff Brantley Sr., was a second-round pick of the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1986 draft. He played for the Phillies in 1991 and 1992, recording a 4-8 record with a 4.25 ERA in 34 career major-league games.

 

The father is a member of the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame.

 

Brantley, a centerfielder at Adelphi, is the third Staten Islander to be taken in this week's draft.

 

LIU-Brooklyn shortstop John Ziznewski went to the Chicago White Sox in the eighth round and Stony Brook catcher Kevin Krause went to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the ninth round.

Latz formed an electric prep battery with Mike Papierski, and both are committed to Louisiana State. Latz may not get there after a strong finish to a dominant spring campaign. The slender 6-foot-2, 185-pounder is growing into his body and has added velocity this spring. After sitting in the 84-88 mph range last summer on the travel ball circuit, Latz topped out at 92 mph early and popped some 93s as the season wore on. He has a feel for spinning his slider and has shown the ability to land it for strikes. He’s needed just two pitches to overmatch Illinois prep competition and could use some polish, but he has athleticism. If he doesn’t sign, he could pitch in the weekend rotation for LSU as a freshman.

I think more likely most of the guys go to school outside of the top few. If those guys don't take the money though, the Jays can throw it at the other tough signs they took as insurance.

Okay so I have speculated we have around 1.3M to spread around or spend based on the punted picks and the 5% overage. We also get a free 100k on every pick outside the top 10 so in reality it would be closer to 1.4M. Now where else can we get savings on our picks.

I think we can get Pentecost at around 2.5-2.6 and save 200k. Last year's 11th pick Dominic Smith had more leverage than Pentecost and he went 200k below slot at 2.6M as well. I think we can probably save 61k on Wells. Ironically he was drafted in the same slot as last year's pick Patrick Murphy who signed for 500k (150k below slot). Murphy was injured obviously, while Wells is healthy, but that's why we'd only be asking him to sign for 61k less. I would try to get Morgan at 400k flat and save 58k. I couldn't really find a previous year comp for him, since the guy taken in his slot the year before was a catcher, but a college catcher. After that it will depend on how much if any we can save on Hoffman. Maybe get him for 2.8M?

You never know Russell Wilson signed. Wouldn't hurt for him to sign at all. Could be a cool experience.

 

Wilson signed before he was he was even considered a legit NFL prospect. I don't see the point of this for the Padres.

They really don't. Kevin Pillar is the only one in recent Blue Jays history. Most draftees in this range are just college guys needed to fill the low minors. The Blue Jays have to fill their Appy, NWL and GCL teams.

I'm a little surprised the Padres took Manziel so high. I knew he'd get taken but thought it would be in rounds 35+. They must have anticipated the Astros being aggressive.
