connorp Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 The term is "regression to the mean." We don't need to accommodate the morons who don't understand regression by coming up with a new term. Kind of tit-for-tat but if you're moving towards your mean like the Jays are now, isn't that progressing to the mean:p

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 (edited) To be fair AA probably waited to long to get a deal done with Santana but the Santos Kinsler trade would have helped us multiple ways and it's all Kinsler's fault. Edited June 20, 2014 by G-Snarls

Cooler Heads Prevail Verified Member Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 It's ok for ppl to have other opinions bro. I made my opinion known that I also don't like their chances. If I'm proven wrong though, I prefer that actually. I'd be happy. Also, I'm (and neither are many others) not the type that's going to track you down when/if they do choke and say "told you so homer"... we're just sharing opinions. Any team in a 5 team division is usually going to fail. The issue is writing them off, which is a joke at this point. Any teams that can compete well enough over 70+ games is capable of competing well enough over 162 games. There is no guarantee they will, the majority of teams fail. I clearly stated in the past that I like the Jays chances to win this division more then any other team, but that the one scenario that is most worrisome involves losing many head to head with the Yankees and the Yankees augmenting their team at the deadline. This is a rationale way of addressing team chances. Simply writing a team off because it just feels right to do so is what I am addressing here. Or addressing reasons that don't hold much water over 40 years of baseball ( like a "hot month" being unsustainable being a reason you don't win a division; in reality, such a month often forecasts a winner ). So if people want to put up rationale reasons why they may lose the season, and do something like pick another AL East team that will win, go for it. But this whole theory that the Jays will lose because they haven't won in 20 years and something about the jersey decrees this is a whole bunch of crap. Yet we see this kind of posting on here 20 times a day now.

We'll see. I also agree it's dumb to say they wont win because they haven't in 20 years but it's equally dumb to compare them to a team from 20 years ago as well.

Rays get shut out a lot and were a common preseason favorite to win the AL East. Their best option being proposed lately is to tank the team for years by trading their best players for prospects. Rays fans hang their hats on the idea that their management is so strong that they can fleece other GMs of their best prospects, despite being known for doing exactly that the last few years. My opinion, being a Rays fan is a lot worse, lot of bad times ( think Cubs ) are coming down the pipe.

The Rays model is not really sustainable until they start drafting players who become star major leaguers. Theres only so much that you can trade your pre-arb or pre-FA guys, get 1-2 prospects for say a Shields, and hope to keep contending. Assuming the hit rate is 33% on these prospects, unless they can draft and develop their own players, like they did up until the late 2000's, they wont have enough talent to keep competing with the big spending teams.

Im trying to stay optimistic that the hitting slump ends...every day. I still think we need to double down on a real #1 SP to stick...but I think AA will get that done. It wont be cheap.

I just came to the realization that the Jays have easier obstacles to overcome then the challenge of countering the anti-Jay group on here. 20 years of losing has created a culture that expects nothing but failure and how dare anyone expect anything else but failure. Might be time I stopped frequenting these baseball sites, I don't need months of this nonesense that will occur regardless of how the Jays do. Nothing short of an AL championship series will change things here, and if they fade it will just turn into the 2013 s*** fest with previous regulars like BTS and The Hurl posting how they knew all along they'd fail on top of the short term reactionary crew now. I'll be back at some point when the Jays fate is more clear. I'm not sure there is anybody else on this site that gives them the best shot at the AL East, so I've staked my claim at that forecast.

Yet we see this kind of posting on here 20 times a day now. CPH 1. We have no ace. 2. We have no depth. 3. The team is old. 4. The team might be at it's payroll limit so hard to make deadline trades. 5. The farm sucks in terms of young position players (no Puig or even Boegarts to help with playoff push). 6. The farm sucks so hard to make deadline trades. Most people see the Jays as unable to overcome these factors. Thus they will end up winning low to mid 80s and be passed by teams that have better young players or more resources to add deadline pieces.

Counterpoint: Hutch and Stroman are young. Lawrie is young and could have a huge second half if healthy. EE, Bautista and even Francisco will start hitting bombs again. Rasmus if relatively young and playing for a contract. Melky is playing well and looks healthy. Reyes hasn't really been Reyes yet. Dickey might still go on a roll. For gods sake Happ might be better then we think. Maybe Gibby is savy enough to play the fat catcher less and between the "pitch framing guy" and the "knuckle catcher guy who doesn't strikeout" and the fat guy the catching position is better in the second half. You could be right in the end.

I think we have the best shot at the AL East with our O and D - when the market is available Id like to add a 1 or 2 starter without getting raped too badly, but Im prepared for the consequences of the price longer term. We need a winner and this year is our shot.

THEY WERE JUST f***ING TOYING WITH US. GODAMNIT!!! I don't know what to say. Bautista and Lawrie injured?? I'm not sure how long they will be out for but godamnit this is what happens when you build a team around injury prone guys. Bautista, Colby, Rasmus, Lawrie Reyes. They average 100 games. They will probably average 100 games this year. I f***ing hate AA and Beeston so much. Beeston more. These guys just don't know how to think. They are everything that is wrong with our society. Reyes - awkward slide dislocated ankle - Beeston/AA" That won't happen again" Lawrie - dives into dugout - Beeston/AA "That won't happen again" Drabek - Tommy John - Beeston/AA "That won't happen again' (actually it did). Bautista busts wrist - Beeston/AA That won't happen again' Bautista hurts hip - Beeston/AA That won't happen again Melky tumour - Beeston/.AA That won't happen again And you know what other then Drabek getting another Tommy John, they are right. None of it happened again. BUT SOMETHING ELSE DID!!!!! In the world of suits and haircuts and handshakes Beeston and AA are "right" in a weird way. But in the real world they are wrong. Anyway I'm ranting, but I'm keeping it in the rage thread. And why rant when in first?? Uhhh... losing a 5.5 game lead and key players injured. It's an old, flawed team made by stupid, stupid men. p.s. I still hope they ride it out, get lucky and win. I never root against the team.

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 f***. AA/BEESTON March 2015 - (poor Gibby allready sacraficed) "We were fine until Brett Lawrie and Bautista got injured on the same day. That was unfortunate. No team can lose 2 great players on the same day. That chances of that happening are so small as to be insignificant. We believe in the process. We believe in the scouts. We believe in ourselves. We believe in the Blue Jay way. We're positive people. The Beest is a positive guy. We've had great success. We're successful. We're winners. And we'll win. If not this year then next year. We're not going to let a 1 in 10000 fluke event stop us. 2 guys injured on the same day?? Bad luck. We'll be back." YOU f***ING MORONS!!! BUT YOU KNOW WHAT! IT'S OUR FAULT. WE TAKE THIS s*** YEAR AFTER. STOETEN, WILNER, BEESTON, AA, THEY'RE PRACTICALLY THE BILDERBURG GROUP. GODAMNIT I'M GOING NUTS HERE I REALLY AM. OK. Rant over. I think. If guys average 115 games a year that's what they'll play next year. Our front office doesn't understand that so they should resign before 9:00 a.m. this morning and apologize to us for making such a mess.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 OK. Next Blue Jay President interview question. Billy Bookie a low level employee at Wendy's restaurant has the following monthy attendance record. April 11/20 days present for work May 14/21 days present for work June 17/20 days present for work July 7/22 days present for work Many unfortunate things have happened to Billy. In April He got bit by a dog one day. In May his girlfriend left him for his best friend. In June his attendance was good but his favourite baseball team collapsed making him very depressed so he missed 3 days. In July he got in a car accident. It was not serious but he had a neck injury that took longer then expected to heal. Billy seems to be recovered from his car accident and finished July with a strong week. What is Billy's expected attendance in August? a) about 60%. Simply the average of the other months. 90% as all the happenings were very rare and different and those kind of things could not possibly be expected to happen again.
