Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 With Nick Martinez pitching? Don't bet on it. That Darvish game was one the Rangers needed.. otherwise, they'd likely be at risk of a sweep. This Rangers team is REALLY bad right now, possibly worse than the Astros. At least the Astros have plenty of young talent coming up this summer.. Rangers traded most of their prospects away in previous years, and Joey Gallo and Jorge Alfaro are still more than a year away. What, Perez, Holland, Harrison, Feliz, Andrus, Profar, martin, hallo, alfaro and another wave of young international studs coming after that. This is a very good organization having a terrible stretch of bad luck. They will get healthy and win 90+ games for years to come.
Cooler Heads Prevail Verified Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Yeah but does Janssen throw 97, have a wipeout slider or get swinging strikes? Nope. He'll never be that guy. Also, he has a 5.60 xFIP now on the season. Some of you guys are getting a little too excited. Janssen is 59/64 ( 92%) in save opportunities. Santos is 39/54 ( 72% ). It's not even close. Now if Santos saves the next 140 in a row, he gets to 92%.

He is struggling to command that slow curve he likes to drop in missing badly with it. He is getting it done so far in a short sample size and Im glad he is back. But he lives on the edge like MB and he will need to get sharper on his command. Heres hoping he does.

There is zero debate as to who the more effective reliever is. Santos can't even hold Casey's jock.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Joey Bats already at 2.3 WAR On pace for around 8 WAR Guy is showing no signs of slowing down. Unbelievable.

shortstop Verified Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 JB's attitude is so much better this year...has he complained once to an ump? Just great to see him focus on baseball... 2 above .500 is good but this team needs a cushion - something like 5-10 games above .500...question is can they beat teams during a stretch where that team is playing well...

Yeah at points many were worried than he was in decline. But it looks like he's still.got it. Last 2 seasons were probably only sub par because of injuries.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 He could be a top 5 MVP candidate easily. Killer OBP and HR/RBI numbers and playing a solid RF with killer arm. And yes he seems more "in the game" than ever. All business. Very little griping. He's a terrifying beast for opposing teams, especially when EE and Francisco are backing him up and hitting too.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Pick any stat and it's ridiculous 1.000 OPS 172 OPS+ 176 wRC+ .430 wOBA FFS...
Bunchedundies Verified Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Got our "Ace" on the mound to go for the kill, types of games you want to win, to really get some momentum going, I wont feel comfortable until this team is a good amount above .500.

Amazing and he is still underappreciated in the media (US media more so) I think, all I hear is trout, trout, cabrera......Deservedly so, but bautista is in the conversation imo, a step below, but still, one of the best in the game.

eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 There is debate. Steamer greatly favours Santos RoS. Santos might never pitch in the majors again. Janssen has consistently outperformed the advanced metrics for 4 straight seasons. It's pointless to debate when one guy can't even pitch any longer.
Bunchedundies Verified Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 ... and we've identified another quality SP to go with Hutch and Buerhle Who? Stroman? Hendricks?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Who? Stroman? Hendricks? Well that's it. Don't know who. This team is going to grumble around .500 if we have 2/5 starters who blow up regularly. Buerhrle and Hutch have both been beyond great Dickey looks like he's probably going to be mostly good this year If we continuously throw gascans out there after those guys we can't keep pace. 1-2 among Stroman/Redmond/Happ/Nolin/Hendricks have to be at least decent or we need to trade for somebody.

Oh yes totally agree, we need a young arm to step up, hope stroman is the guy. Sorry I thought you meant we HAve identified another starter, I am hung over, feels like my head might cave in so I am not thinking clearly today. Friggin Brandon Morrow , if he was reliable this team would he way better shape, and f*** Erwin Santana.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 AL race: Trout, Bautista, Miggy BL race: Tulo, Stanton, Puig Agree in terms of voting. And yet Josh Donaldson leads Trout Bautista and Cabrera in WAR by a sizeable margin. Talk about unappreciated... Edit: By BBRef WAR and ESPN. By Fangraphs Trout has a slight lead.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Outperforming means nothing. Relievers outperform consistently because they enter with more than 0 out sometimes which reduces their ERA. Probably not case with Janssen but you need over 1200IP to even consider outperforming being a skill. We debate this almost daily now. Neither side will bend. Casey has consistently gotten results while Santos is consistently imploding or rotting on the DL. You favour Santos' pure stuff while I favour Casey's ability to actually throw strikes. Let's just agree to disagree.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Not that I'm disagreeing with your point that Janssen is better than Santos, but since the start of 2011 Janssen has a 2.40 ERA and 3.1 xFIP over 176 innings. Nobody would think twice if a starting pitcher's ERA was 0.7 runs above/below his xFIP over the course of 28 starts, so why bring it up for a reliever? I really hate when sample size gets punted when people talk about relief pitchers. JFaS consistently uses small samples to back up his points relating to Santos as well. Anyways, it's pointless to debate this any longer. Nothing good can come of it. I hope Santos comes back and lives up to the hype but I won't hold my breath.

Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 I'd love to see Donaldson get an MVP. Guy is absolutely elite, but gets underrated for a lot of the same reasons Trout does. No MVP for him unless Might or trout are either hurt or suck for a good stretch. You're right though he's still amazingly underrated.
