fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 Ben Nicholson-Smith @bnicholsonsmith Casey Janssen activated and Chris Getz designated for assignment. My apologies re. roof, which somehow I mistook for open as I walked in
The_DH Verified Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 So we have one utility infielder outfielder on the bench? Not good.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 This obviously confirms Lawrie will see lots of 2b against RHP and Tolleson will start at 2B against LHP. At least they kept Kratz. On the other hand, they're back to 8 relievers. I hope the next move is Happ out and Mastroianni or Pillar in.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 Some how at some point we have to find out if pillar is legit and able to replace one of Rasmus or melky for next year.

With Janssen back it gives the Jays another BP arm which hopefully pushes Stroman to the rotation and Happ out.

Best bet would be a Pillar/Gose platoon. I think Rasmus will be gone, although I do hope they get a pick in return. At least Melky is a switch-hitter and doesn't need a platoon partner. Lots of season left though, let's see how it plays out.

Brutal what these 5 and 2 inning starts are doing to this team which is the reason for the 8 relievers. I know many disagree with me but our BP woes are the result of overwork and over exposure except for Santos. Getting Casey back sure helps as long as he still locks down his chances. Can we please go to a designated long man for Happless,s starts. Tell Happ he is going 4 and Redmond is going 4 and pray McGowan starts going at least 6 at least until thru futility they finally start Stroman .
kgm1 Verified Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 "Hope" is all we have left. I suspect Stroman is capped around 150 innings IMO. has anyone heard the #. That would put him starting games in June. Frustrating i know but that seems to me the reason. Happ will get a long, long , leash.

I think Santos and Delabar are going through bad stretches plus I think Gibbons hasn't helped matters with the way he's used his relievers. They're also shooting themselves in the foot by keeping Happ in the rotation. His career numbers indicate what he is, AA is simply reluctant to admit his man-crush on him turned out to be wrong. They could help their rotation by inserting Stroman in for Happ or McGowan. I also don't get activating Janssen today since he pitched yesterday. Is he even available? The bullpen is rested. They've had a few blowouts this week and Redmond and Rogers gave them a shot in the arm yesterday.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 This team needs a fresh GM to come in ASAP and make the proper roster moves to give them a chance. AA simply has too much baggage to worry about in terms of DFA'ing Happ and/or others and might be too afraid of his trades looking worse than they already do.

All GMs make regrettable moves but the mistake is when you won't admit it and move on.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 I suspect Stroman is capped around 150 innings IMO. has anyone heard the #. That would put him starting games in June. Frustrating i know but that seems to me the reason. Happ will get a long, long , leash. I agree that Happ will get at least 3 more starts. However, AA has said that none of Morrow, McGowan, Hutchison or Stroman are on innings limit. Even if it were true that Stroman is capped around 150 innings, why wouldn't Hutchison be capped at around 120 innings? What I mean is that Stroman threw around 120 innings in 2013 (plus extended ST innings as he served his surpension). Hutchison, on the other hand, threw around 60 innings after coming back from TJS. So again, by this logic, Hutchison should've started in bullpen. Oh and Hutchison is 9 months older than Stroman, for whatever this is worth. A new GM needs to come in with a clean slate and round out the roster.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 Nobody is on an innings limit, nor should they be. I don't know why that's so hard to believe. Stroman has been a reliever because they've felt obligated to give Happ a shot. Hopefully that's over and they ride Stroman the rest of the way.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 I have a feeling Happ days are numbered. We can't go with a Tolleson/Kratz/Thole bench lol. An arm needs to go and Happ out and Stro in with pillar/gose/mastro to the bench just makes too much sense.
jayswin11 Verified Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 I can't see us carrying 3 catchers for long unless the idea is to use Kratz/Navarro in a platoon with Lind.

It doesn't hurt that Pillar has been tearing the cover off the ball lately.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 I can't see us carrying 3 catchers for long unless the idea is to use Kratz/Navarro in a platoon with Lind. I think with Francisco up that is now the plan. Tolleson at 2B/3B vs LHP, Kratz catching and Navarro at DH. Ideally we bring up Mastro/Pillar and play them in CF as well and platoon all three left handed bats, that cannot hit LHP.

I think some are just reaching to find some logic for Stroman being wasted in the BP for a guy like Happ. At the end of the day, they want to give the veteran a "fair shot" plus they owe him $5+M so they are hoping to somehow get some value out of that deal.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 It's hard to believe that management has decided that carrying three catchers and no fourth OF is an appropriate course of action. I'd be fine with the 3 catchers if Thole had more playing time vs RHP, Navarro played all the games at DH vs LHP and Kratz caught all the games against LHP. With Happ or Rogers being optioned/DFAd to make room for Mastro or Pillar to play CF in a platoon with Rasmus.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 It's hard to believe that management has decided that carrying three catchers and no fourth OF is an appropriate course of action. I think it's worse that they're carrying 8 relievers. They could just have a normal bullpen plus a 4th OF like Pillar or Mastroianni and still have Kratz/Navarro as a platoon partner for Lind even if this is far from ideal.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 AA really loves Santos as a pitch runner eh? the team has a short bench and Santos was a SS for years. he can run the bases any day he is not pitching and it gives the team another option with the short bench. I dont mind this move at all.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 Just put Navarro on the DL and bring up Pillar or Gose. Simple solution. I just don't get keeping Navarro active right now... What's the harm in putting him On the DL when he's clearly hurt?

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 I'm not even sure Janssen is available today as he pitched an inning yesterday with NH and hasn't gone on back-to-back days since ST I believe. It's weird how nice the media is to AA, I wonder if he's buying them dinner every night.
