SantosLHalper21 Verified Member Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 This is all on the manager here. With Santos already pitched 15 pitches in the 6th, Gibbons drags his ass out for the 7th, where expectedly he struggled, leaving the game with the bases juiced and 2 outs. Of course he brings in Delabar to relieve him in a very tight situation and Delabar lays another egg. Why on earth is Gibbons constantly giving his bullpen guys too much leash? Santos should've got the inning and that was it. A clean inning is not only good for the team, but good for Sergio's confidence. What does Gibbons do? Drag him out for the 7th and take him out far too late. Bring in another cold reliever in a bases loaded jam and expect him to get them out of it. Cure: Start Delabar in the 7th and go with Cecil in the 8th. At least if you have to go with Cecil in the 9th, Cecil has had some starting experience and could conceivably pitch 2 innings. I've always said if you can afford to have your bullpen to come in to start innings, its far better than having them warm up quickly and come into a game. This loss is not only due to Garrett Richards filthy sinking fastball, but its also due to terrible bullpen managing again by Gibbons. The Jays won 5 games in a row because Gibbons didn't mis-manage the bullpen. He rarely went with 2 relievers in one inning and only once tried his hand at getting more than 1 inning out of his relievers. Twice in 5 games the Jays had to go to 2 relievers in an inning. Stick with what works. Have the bullpen come in with nobody on base, or to start an inning. The Jays will be successful as a result.

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Oh give it a rest. Santos needed the work. If you think our bullpen management is bad, go watch a Rays game, which Joe Maddon has been even worse than John Gibbons in bullpen management (they've used 5 pitchers out of the pen tonight).. of course, that may be more due to ineffectiveness of the Rays relievers, plus none of the starters going deep.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 You pretty much can't bring in Delabar or Santos with runners on base at this point because of how erratic their control has been. Puts Gibby in a tough spot. The one thing I think we can all agree on is that Delabar needs to shave that f***ing beard. Litsch wore it better dude.. and that's saying something.

I guess if I copy and paste Minor League Affiliate boxscores each day I'll be of more use to you bigots. Don't worry I'm done making threads. Anytime I want to discuss things that need to be discussed..you all claim I'm an idiot with no baseball knowledge. Fact is..the Jays have lost MANY games this season because the bullpen was mismanaged. Of course after a 5 game winning streak..nothing Gibbons does is wrong right now, so you guys have your lips around his cock. Congrats losers, you lose another potential poster and contributor because all you do is try and rag on new guys who just want to get the ball rolling and discuss something different. No good for nothing this forum. What a waste of energy even creating an account if the people around here genuinely dislike new people that make threads about something worthwhile discussing. Seriously though, exatly Cecil and Santos each walked 2 tonight and gave up runs The BP has just not been trustworthy. Just because the result loses the game doesn't mean Gibby made the wrong moves FFS.

Sorry. To me, it sounded like you were ranting more than you were seeking to have a discussion so I disagree with this comment. There is a difference between forcefully stating your point of view and putting something forward to be discussed. I guess if I copy and paste Minor League Affiliate boxscores each day I'll be of more use to you bigots. Unless someone is an expert in a particular field and sharing valuable information with forum members then coming to a forum to be of use to the members somehow seems a bit misguided. If the objective is to learn then open the ears and keep the mouth closed unless seeking clarification. If it is to start a discussion then the opening thread content should be worded appropriately. In my opinion this thread came across more as an attack (rant/whine) rather than an attempt to put forward a scenario for discussion. Also, trying to live up to others is really, really tough so just be yourself. Fact is..the Jays have lost MANY games this season because the bullpen was mismanaged. Really? Or could it be partly caused by the individuals who were called upon to do a job and failed miserably? What about the batters who had the opportunity earlier in the game to take a bigger lead and failed? Was that Gibbons fault as well or do they automatically get a free pass? I do not agree with all of Gibbons' decisions but no one is perfect. Streaks will certainly come to an end (even Bautista's on-base streak) so just ride the wave without coming across as being too reactionary. It's alright to find fault but to throw anyone under the bus in such a manner does not make sense cuz in this game failure is ever present. It is also true that there are some who make similar posts and are not raked for it but life is not fair, some are just more lucky than others. Of course after a 5 game winning streak..nothing Gibbons does is wrong right now Where was the "blaming BP management" when this was taking place? Was the BP even involved in any of these games or were the starters perfect? Congrats losers, you lose another potential poster and contributor because all you do is try and rag on new guys who just want to get the ball rolling and discuss something different. This is just an observation (maybe even inaccurate) and not an attack on you. Message boards can be brutal on egos so unless a person learns to develop a thick skin they will be, figuratively speaking, prodded/poked, checked for tenderness/sensitivity, roasted and eaten alive. If you enjoy the environment (warm/cosy place) but find the heat to be too much just back away from the fire a bit where it is not singeing your skin to the extent where it causes discomfort. No good for nothing this forum. What a waste of energy even creating an account if the people around here genuinely dislike new people that make threads about something worthwhile discussing. Y'all are worse than grade school kids. I do not believe this statement to be true but then again I do not have conclusive proof otherwise. It's just my gut feeling. Jumping in before anyone else does - tldr. Please forgive me as I was feeling a bit bored and just felt like contributing.
IBTrini Verified Member Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 You can't keep blaming the manager. The f***ing players need to do their jobs. Totally agree with this comment. The manager can, and does, make mistakes however he is not perfect. Sometimes he may make decisions based on a gut feeling (after all he is not really trying to fail) or he tries going with match-ups and it backfires. The same can be said for the players - they choose to swing (or not) at a pitch which, in hindsight, seems utterly baffling. Decisions sometimes need to be made under pressure and in the heat of the moment - sometimes it works and other times it does not. It's cringe-worthy when it fails, and hopefully it's not too often, but it all part of the game. Fans really need to understand this and not over-react at every single failure.

We have blown 5 + games so far this year we should have won, This^^.. I mean what else is there to say. Gibby should have put Cecil in for the 6th and Santos and/or Delebar later imo. He's mismanaged his pitchers at times but ultimately it's more on the players. The bottom line is the pen has been hot garbage and cost us a half dozen games by not executing.
