saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Happ sounds like such a massive douche. LOL @ saying he won't pitch in relief. The guy is lucky he is still even in the bigs. I'm pretty sure he said he doesn't want to pitch in the bullpen, not that he wouldn't pitch in relief. He should be saying he'll do whatever the club wants though...so yes he sounds like a massive douche. He can reject a minor league assignment, but he can't reject a demotion to the bullpen. You're in the pen Happ...deal with it.
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 A big part of being a GM is managing people. You don't just get rid of a guy because he thinks he's a starter and there's no room. Massaging this situation and ending up with Happ as the #6 for the time being and interim bullpen long man could end up being important for Toronto. Maybe. Injuries can strike and pile up at any time and I think I speak for everyone when I say that Happ is definitely a better rotation option than Rogers, Romero, Jenkins, and McGuire, probably better than Drabek and Nolin, and possibly superior to Redmond.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Happ is an important depth guy. Teams rarely get through the season without guys missing time in the rotation. As it is, teams around the league have had tons of starters go down already. It's shocking to think that the Jays haven't had an injury given the guys that are starting in out rotation. I hope that trend continues and Happ is stuck in the pen for a long time.
Spoonovic Verified Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Wow at Happ's comments. He has an attitude problem. He needs to know that he isnt entitled to anything.
Caper Verified Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Wow at Happ's comments. He has an attitude problem. He needs to know that he isnt entitled to anything. It really bothers me because, he could easily go to AAA and be all but assured he's going to get called back up anyway and still make a lot of starts. BlueJays pitchers are not going to stay healthy.
S33n Verified Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 And instead of TV ads for Fargo and Westjet, you get classic MLB highlights between innings now I wish my MLB.tv showed classic highlights. Mine just goes to a "commercial break" screen. PS Brenner, it's worth the money.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Regardless he needs to get rid of AT LEAST one more optionless guy. Rogers Happ Redmond We just can't keep them all, no matter how much AA seems to want to. Jeffress was a start, but at least one more has to go. Either traded, or put through waivers. Right now could you sneak Rogers through maybe? Redmond you certainly couldn't, and I want him on the club anyway. Happ? No idea. The contract hurts in trading him, and we can't option him anyway. I'd send Happ down. He's making enough money that chance are no one will claim him. And if he is claimed, that may be even better, clear some payroll space.

They don't show it every inning. Just sometimes they show these "ads" for mlb.com that include highlight plays and historical moments in baseball. It's better than what's on Sportsnet. Then again, a nice thing abouyt baseball is the commercial breaks are only 60 seconds.

Unlike Rogers and Redmond, who don't have enough MLB service time, Happ can refuse a minor league assignment. And unfortunately, based on what we're hearing from him right now, I am quite convinced that he WOULD refuse it.
baconpancakes Verified Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 As much as Happ is sucking, i do feel a little bad for him. I remember watching him, the game he got hit, at the time he was looking like he would be one of our better pitchers that year. Aint been the same since. Gun shy? maybe, or maybe that brief "good" window he had was a fluke. Either way, this team is not going anywhere with how much time we spend trying to catch "lighting in a bottle" This team can afford to cut ties with players like this. Amongst themselves they need to learn how to admit a damn mistake and move on.

But as a team wanting to win, you have to separate yourself from that. JA Happ has had ONE decent stretch of pitching with the Jays, over the first 5-6 weeks of 2013. Other than that he's been bad. He wasn't good at the end of last season when he came back, and he was worse in spring training this year. Should he get some starts? Not out of sympathy. Only if someone or two someones get hurt. And if you can move him to a team more in need of a #5 starter, I would do that. I think they made a mistake in trading for him and extending him.

I guess we could release him if he refused, but then we'd still be on hook for his salary then I assume?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Oh, I see. What are our options if he refuses? I guess we could release him if he refused, but then we'd still be on hook for his salary then I assume? Exactly. There's another recent thread on Happ where that was discussed. In a nutshell - If he refuses a minor league assignment, we have to keep him on the MLB club or we can release him. If we release him he becomes a free agent and we still have to pay him. If another team signs him (and someone almost certainly probably would, for league minimum salary ~500k) we would have to pay 5.4M (2014 salary plus buyout on his 2015 option) MINUS whatever his new team is paying him.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 When Janssen comes back this weekend-ish there will have to be a decision to be made and it WILL be one of Redmond/Happ/Rogers that is going to be on the chopping block. IMO it will be Rogers that will be odd man out and looks like Happ with be mop up duties which would please me greatly.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 I think so Sammy I expect Rogers to get put on waivers when Janssen is activated. I doubt AA can pull off any trades now. He's much more likely to get a deal done in June.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Wagner sent down is more likely. Why do we need 3 f***ing long men in the pen?
Brenner Verified Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Rogers will be cut, he was pitching for his job lastnight and blew it. Why do people want to send Wagner down? He's a solid power arm.
Flamingweazel Verified Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Wagner sent down is more likely. That would be really dum.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Why do we need 3 f***ing long men in the pen? AA likes him those 8 man bullpens and hoarding bullpen arms is his thing! 3 long arms to cover Hutchinson,Morrow and Mcgowan Starts seems about right or what he is thinking! plus a five man pen for bad days and to cover the other two starters.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Truth bomb: If all you have is s***** bench options, does it matter if you have 3 or 4 of them? Might as well keep an 8 man pen until we get a legit 4th OF over here
baconpancakes Verified Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 4th OF....., boy am i missing Rajai right now. Miniscule sample size, but he is playing well in the D, has 5 sb already. yet another off season botch job.
Brenner Verified Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 4th OF....., boy am i missing Rajai right now. Miniscule sample size, but he is playing well in the D, has 5 sb already. yet another off season botch job. Davis wanted a chance to play elsewhere. Here he was clearly the 4th OF. The Tigers outfield is a bit of a mess so he is much more likely to get solid playing time there. Would have been nice to keep but you can't spend $10 mil on your 4th OF (though would be much better use than the dead money we have committed to Romero and Happ).
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Yep. Davis would be nice but not at the $ he got. And he wanted to play everyday. Would not have happened here, especially now with Melky playing well.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 so our bench is a cross-eyed back up catcher, Goins/Kawasaki and Sierra who never plays. go team?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 so our bench is a cross-eyed back up catcher, Goins/Kawasaki and Sierra who never plays. go team? Yes. And we have several can't-hit-their weight guys in Buffalo. again, I don't think having 3 vs 4 matters all that much.
Maahfaace Verified Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 I am too cheap to pay 129 for MLB TV lol. But this is really forcing my hand right now. Vipbox.tv. Every game is streamed from every sport, just make sure u use adblock extension in Google Chrome Web browser. Cheap ass dutchmen like myself can't afford it either.

bendera3 Verified Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Tell Happ that he is in the rotation; he's Starter #6. We're going with a 6 man rotation because he's so good.
