That said, in the larger picture... The Red Sox 3-4-5 starters before this signing were Peavy, Lackey, Doubront. With Allen Webster, Rubby De La Rosa, etc. waiting in the wings. Now, the Jays' 3-4-5 are Morrow, Happ, Redmond. With Hutch, Drabek, Stroman waiting in the wings. AA says given the "depth" he has waiting in the wings, he doesn't believe the value of the guys available matched up with their cost. The Red Sox say given the depth they have waiting in the wings, plus their 3-4-5 which by all accounts are better than the Jays' 3-4-5, they STILL think the value added by a free agent starter is worth the cost. Who now, has miss-assessed value?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 There goes the best available free agent pitcher.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Now Drew needs to sign with them and the offseason is over
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 D-F grade offseason for AA. Embarrassing. The rest of the AL East is laughing as they take advantage of our stupidity.

Caper Verified Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 If J. A. Happ was a free agent this year and was never with the jays.... the board would be going absolutely nuts if another team signed him.

Rotator Verified Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 how much are they signing capuano for? he seems like a good guy to stash away at buffalo at least if he would sign that kind of deal. Maybe the team really doesn't have any money to spend, maybe Ricky's useless contract has to be moved to free up more money.

Maybe the team really doesn't have any money to spend, maybe Ricky's useless contract has to be moved to free up more money. Capuano would probably be our 3rd best starter (Zero faith in Morrow at this point until he shows us something). You don't "stash" him in Buffalo. You give the guy a guaranteed rotation spot.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Just wait it out. Capuano's agents are obvious despaired right now. I haven't seen anyone despair anyone else this badly in a long time. Despair.
TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted February 20, 2014 Author Posted February 20, 2014 I really wouldnt be surprised if the Yankees get Drew or Santana or both. If we are to take AA at his word, and its his and his staff's decision, and not Rogers tightening the purse strings, then either he has misvalued the free agent class, or the Red Sox and Yankees have misvalued the free agent class. I'm going to go with the former.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Maybe if Happ projected to provide more than 0.8 wins, we would be. Steamer and Oliver have Happ at ~2WAR if he starts for a whole season.

TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted February 20, 2014 Author Posted February 20, 2014 He needs to come out and make us aware of the budgetary restrictions. Enough with the veil of secrecy. Yes, This. Maybe you lose an advantage by letting your competitors know your budget and payroll space, or lackthereof, but I don't think thats it. I think AA and especially Beeston know from a business end, that if the team says anything about payroll parameters, the fans will freak out (rightfully so), and stay away from the gate, stop watching, stop buying merchandise, and they'll lose the little goodwill left that they banked after last offseason.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 In addition to being better than 2-3 of the guys we might start in the rotation this year, he also was willing to accept a 1 year contract. Given our decent collection of young and returning guys, getting Capuano or Burnett on a 1 year deal would have been much better than signing Jimenez or Santana for 4 years IYAM.

At least Gibby had the decency to come out and say that the team is at it's "soft limit" on payroll

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Jon Heyman @JonHeymanCBS 4m capuano gets MLB deal for $2.25M base with performance bonuses to take it to $5M. #redsox
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Man Max 5M for an established MLB starter and we're not in on him. Just fantastic.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Capuano isn't much of an improvement over what we have. There's a reason he's taken a long time to sign anywhere. And in Boston, it'll be in a swingman role so that Brandon Workman can work on his stuff in AAA as a starter, so that he can be called up if an injury strikes, which will likely happen due to Peavy, Lackey and Buchholz's fragility. He's nothing more than a replacement for Ryan Dempster, who was expected to have the swingman role before he decided to walk away from the game to focus on his family and recovering from neck issues. 1 year, $2.25M BTW for Capuano. That probably shows how little interest there was in free agency, as 29 other teams, including the Jays, passed on him, because there are many other guys similar to him internally.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 I guess AA wasn't able to properly despair Capuano's agent? As the OP says, this is a nice example of the difference between a quality org and an also-ran. The Sox have Lester/Buchholz/Lackey/Peavy/Doubront locked in with Workman, Webster, De la Rosa, Wright, Ranaudo, and Barnes as depth and they still go and get Capuano. Remember when we all laughed at Cherington before he went on to win a WS with our former manager? Good times to be a Jays fan. How old is Beeston and what's the life expectancy on guys who pump cigar smoke through their mouths on a daily basis?
Jays Verified Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Jesus Christ. I would have guaranteed him like 6-7 with bonuses taking him to 10. Sounds like our offer to Ervin.

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 I really want to know the details of AA's involvement with Capuano. I can't believe this guy signed for $2.25 million guaranteed. He's a legit 4-5 starter when healthy. Meanwhile Dustin McGowan will earn $2 million this year, J.A. Happ $5.4 million, f***ing Esmil Rogers $1.875 million. Does AA not think Capuano is an upgrade on these guys? What happened here that a team desperate for pitching lets a legit starter go to a division rival for Dustin McGowan money? He needs be be called out here. Capuano is not an upgrade on McGowan....hopefully he stays healthy...but if he doesn't, I'd rather see drabek, hutch, stroman and even romero pitching than Capuano...we don't need a run of the mill guy blocking those with better upside..
