From Rotoworld:

According to TSN.ca, the Blue Jays could be contemplating a reunion with free agent hurler A.J. Burnett.

The 37-year-old right-hander recently decided that he's planning to return for a 16th season, and he has generated significant interest from around the league. He previously pitched in Toronto from 2006-2008 where he posted a 3.94 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 525/191 K/BB ratio over 522 2/3 innings. For fantasy purposes, his value would take a big hit with a potential move to the American League East.

The question is if the Jays are even an option for him?

We'd have to put the most money on the table, that's for sure.

For a one year deal, I would be ecstatic if AA could convince Rogers to open up the wallet. Would be the perfect bridge to ease Stroman/Hutch/Nolin into the majors. Plus no negative long term ramifications. Lots of money would be coming off the books for 2015/2016.

I would gladly give AJ $16 or $17M on a one year deal, that's a lot more appealing than Ubaldo at $15M x 4 years (although I'd still take Ubaldo over Santana if we can't get Burnett).

It would certainly change our off-season from embarrassing to acceptable... Getting Drew would make it a B+ (only thing missing would have been a platoon bat for Lind, which is still out there by the way)

Agreed. Another option would be if AA went after Capuano. Not as good of an option, but decent if that is the best we can do.

Capuano is a good value guy but I think he's better suited to the NL or maybe Anaheim. He's a bit homer-prone and a fly ball guy, so I worry he'd get lit up here.

Also, I'm not at all in favour of signing both Jimenez and Santana, for 4ish years, but one of them PLUS Burnett on a 1 year deal would be sweet.

He wouldn't be as good as Burnett, but would at least give us a better option to start the season than what we currently have. Not sure it would be enough though, unless AA addresses 2B or the platoon with Lind.

Would you rather

Burnett + Baker or Ubaldo (4 years) and Drew (multiple years)?

Ubaldo and Drew. 2B is a more pressing need than the bench.

The one with Drew. I don't get the obsession with acquiring a mediocre platoon bat.

How about Capuano + Jimenez + Drew?

I'd like Burnett on a 1 "yearer" but I don't think the Jays can lure him. If they signed Capuano + Drew + Baker, I wouldn't be too upset.

How about just Jimenez and Drew?

Depending on how much they have to pay for them. Drew would be the key for me as I want the team to be better on the field and at the plate so Jimenez would have to come at a nice price.

Anyway, too much attention being paid to another rumour. Although I understand it's like a guy who hasn't gotten laid in a year, anything will do at that point.

Please.

If the O's and Jays are the front runners then I think we have a good shot. The O's can't possibly be an appealing destination for FA's right now. They'll probably find Burnett's left ear is slightly larger than his right ear at the physical and nix the deal and try and sign him to an MiLB deal.

If we are talking multiple deals, I think the best is Burnett + Capuno both on 1 yr deals, maybe an option on Capuno. Then the only multi-year commitment could be Drew. The problem with Drew is the draft pick, and if the team craps the bed for whatever reason and you decide to sell off I think a guy like Ubaldo, depending on his performance and the deal, would have more value to recoup the lost prospect. Ubaldo is the riskier sign, compared to Drew (you pretty much know what you are going to get), but have the potential that his deal becomes a steal.

A good combo would also be Ubaldo, Capuno, & Baker. Capuno is essentially a no brainer at something like $6 million, I think he is better than Happ @ $ 5.2 mil. I hate on Happ alot, but I do like him fine on the team if he is #6 (he is just over paid for that role). A guy like Rogers can play that role for much cheaper.

In my ideal world, if we acquire a pair of expensive players like that it would come on the back of dealing Buerhle and his contract away so we are making more efficient use of our money.

I'd like to think they'd deal Happ and one of Santos/Janssen sometime during ST. I just don't think there are any takers for Buehrle's contract. I think if you sign Burnett and Drew the team is a contender, at least "on paper" and I think there's a market for Santos and Happ.

He played most of his career in a stadium that has a 110 HR factor. Don't think this is a problem.

He gave up a lot of HRs at Citi Field and Chavez Ravine, so I don't think it's just a Milwaukee thing. Besides which, Rogers Centre is a launching pad.

Posted
And actually, Capuano has a career 1.37 HR/9 on the road, compared to just 1.10 at home. So it's definitely not just Milwaukee to blame, the guy is prone to the gopher ball.
Posted
But then not because he does very well at keeping it in in parks where it should be harder.

Huh? He has a career HR/9 north of 1.2 playing mostly in a park with similar effects as RC. I don't think it's any stretch to assume you would see a similar HR rate here.

He is homer prone. I've probably watched him more than all posters on here combined. Tells you how big of a fanboy I was of him. He is definitely homer prone.
