Presumably, but that's not on Tanaka. They could trade A-Rod to Tony Reagins and get back under, it's not a Tanaka fixed cost.

I guess hypothetically but, it's pretty certain they'll be over the tax in 2014 and be considered a serial offender by the MLB...

I'll do what I want, thanks for caring though it's cute. baseball economics are a joke, guaranteed contracts, grossly overpaid, it's a sham. Huge imbalance in team spending power.

Agreed. The MLB will continue to become increasingly irrelevant until a salary cap is instituted. Until then, you'll always have tenuous parity at best and out-of-control contracts (especially with these international players like Tanaka who have proven nothing at this level).

I think a lot of people here have become Jays fans since the glory years.

It's not 1993 anymore, bringing up winfield, molitor is about as usefull as asking to re-incarnate babe ruth.

I was really hoping his wife had more say and demanded he take the dodgers deal . not much call for a japanese speaking Briteny in New York .

How do you know she didn't? More likely she said take the biggest contract.

Tanaka did really well for himself - maybe better then i expected.

- 7 years instead of 6. AV 20+ million. Long term security even if he's not the pitcher projected.

- Opt out after 4 years. If he's a star can re enter the FA market at age 29...setting himself for another massive pay day.

- full no trade Claus - security for his family.

- Plays on a storied franchise with other familiar Japanese stars on a team that is consistently good.

I don't even want to think what it would have cost to get him to come to Toronto. lol. Job well done by his agent.

I don't think this is the case at all. I think everyone here who wants AA fired is in favour of a complete regime change from Beeston down.

I could certainly be wrong on this, but that's just the sense I get from the posts. On the other hand, it's certainly true that GM's will take the brunt of criticism so it is what it is. I guess we'll have to wait and see, but I don't think Beeston would get fired along with AA. I think Beeston would have to retire, it just seems like he has so much power.

I'd rather Beeston left than AA. Beeston is the one who implemented the "5 year policy" and got us blacklisted from Boras clients.

The sooner we get rid of that son of a bitch and get someone who actually knows baseball the sooner this team can move ahead .

IF we fire AA it isn't like we are going to get a Mozeliak or a Friedman or even Jeff Luhnow . I trust AA to build the farm just fix the development system .

Obviously the people running this organization do not know how to field a competitive team, heck they cannot even develop players. Desperate times, another last place finish coming up

It's a moot point because if Beeston's replacement is competent at all, he would fire AA immediately.

Big money contracts are good for the game as long as they do not cripple small market teams. They attract new players, people often choose to play baseball professionally because they can make significantly more than other sports and create excitement every off-season.

What they really need to do is scrap the draft pick compensation system and move to a monetary one.

I think it's been presumed for a while that AA will eventually take over for Beeston. I would expect that to happen when the next rebuild does, whether that's 6 months from now or 3 years.

Yes, and it's gone from the American national pastime to behind the NFL for a reason.

MLB's been behind the NFL since the 70s.

Beeston and Rogers control the money and the direction . In Hindsight AA trades last year were s*** and I hated the change in direction but he got that from above .He still has to take the blame for the trades that were god awful .

Where I fault the fire AA guys is that he did build the farm and while he did a s*** job gutting it I do trust him to rebuild it which is what we will have to do after this years shot . Hell if the jays went full rebuild mode trading their top talent they would have the best farm system plus some good young pieces in the majors .

I have no problem blaming AA for negotiating the trades he did, I said at the MLB board that I wouldn't have even traded D'Arnaud straight up for Dickey, but anyway.

Interestingly, the farm isn't in as bad a shape as you'd think it would be given last off season's trades and it could be back in the top 10 with continued good performances by some of the low minors guys and of course with 2 draft picks in June.

I'm one of the few who thinks he's best suited as an assistant GM and not a GM.

We'll need AA around for the rebuild.

Just maybe fire him when we're ready to "go for it"

And select injured players in the drafts.

Dyson, Stilson, Smoral, Murphy, Hollon, Nay......

FFS, MLB fell behind the NFL in the seventies and in recent years it's been closing the gap but why would you let facts get in the way of an idiotic rant.

People have been predicting baseball's demise for a loooong time. They've claimed for a long time that it was too slow for younger generations and other such things.

Now baseball can even organize a decent international tournament, who knows, maybe they should keep proclaiming its demise, it seems to be having the opposite effect.

$203M+ right now after the Tanaka signing.

And he'd better be a stud, or the Yanks are in trouble. With the signing, their payroll is at about $160M for 2015 and about $157M for 2016. So basically, the Yanks have a window of 3 years (or less) to win with Tanaka with the current team. No salary relief is expected until 2017, and with free agency declining and the Yanks farm a mess, it could be trouble if Tanaka ends up a bust.

The NHL & NBA have caps and they're irrelevant.

And personally, I love seeing have & have-nots square off.

There's bigger markets MLB could go to if the smaller market teams can't survive.

Read recently the NHL makes as much money on a per game basis as the MLB. They're not irrelevant.

Wow. Surpised. Would have to read more on it.. I know I was reading only a couple years ago here in the US that NHL ratings were on par with like women's soccer more or less.. maybe there's been a spike..
