Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 We could sign Ubaldo, Garza, and Santana for $175M.
Smokey Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 $25M/yr for Darvish or $16M/yr for Buehrle? Easy decision for me. Let's not forget shipping out all those prospects for the pleasure of paying MB $16m annually.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 That's not what I'm complaining about. I'm complaining about the inconsistency of gutting the farm system for washed-up expensive talent but then getting cold feet when a free agent wants more than 5 years. The way this team operates is completely backwards and makes no sense. Who's expensive? Buerhle, Reyes and Dickey are all at or below market value. Get a clue.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 We could sign Ubaldo, Garza, and Santana for $175M. And that would shut us up now wouldn't it? Let's not pretend there has been anything worth cheering for since the MIA deal though. Fans have a right to be angry and missing out on yet another big name FA isn't going to do anything to quell the rage.

Anybody who thinks we should have topped that is a whole other kind of idiot.
Smokey Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 We could sign Ubaldo, Garza, and Santana for $175M. I don't think anyone is really complaining about not paying Tanaka $25m/yr... it's more about the fact that even at $15m/yr the Jays still wouldn't have a realistic chance.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Who's expensive? Buerhle, Reyes and Dickey are all at or below market value. Get a clue. It's great business to give up valuable long term assets for FA market contracts, a year after they were signed to said FA contracts. Get a clue.
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Tanaka big name FA with ZERO MLB experience, no thanks, I'll pass.

Anybody who thinks we should have topped that is a whole other kind of idiot. It was definitely top dollar. I'm fully expecting AA to trade for Tanaka in two off-season when his contract fits in their 5yr limit.

This is all about the AAV, not the term. There's no way the Jays wouldn't have gone to $15m/7.

DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Who are these valuable long-term assets? Syndergaard might be one, but the rest looks replacement level at best. Syndergaard, Hendo, d'Arnaud, Nicolino, Marisnick, and Yunel.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Based on? AA's love for trading and his hatred for the FA market. It was obviously tongue and cheek though.

"The Jays have long been known to place a five-year maximum on contracts and were unwilling to make an exception for Tanaka. It is unlikely they could have matched the Yankees’ largesse, even on a five-year deal. “We never got that far,” the source said." http://sports.nationalpost.com/2014/01/22/toronto-blue-jays-refused-to-go-past-five-years-for-masahiro-tanaka/
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Syndergaard, Hendo, d'Arnaud, Nicolino, Marisnick, and Yunel. Syndergaard and d'Arnaud are not relevant to your point of "trading valuable long-term assets for recently signed free agents" because they weren't involved in the Miami trade. Henderson looked replacement level at best when he was traded, and thanks to Beeston and Rogers and the PR disaster, Yunel was going to be ditched regardless. This was a trade in which you'd at least get Reyes back.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Syndergaard, Hendo, d'Arnaud, Nicolino, Marisnick, and Yunel. Syndergaard and d'Arnaud weren't traded for someone who meets the criteria of your criticism, and Yunel wasn't a long term asset. I think Hendo, Marisnick, and Nicolino will be above replacement level, but I don't think any will be special.
Smokey Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Yes, because even on a 5-year deal, a 25M aav is f***ing stupid for a guy that's never pitched in the majors. I'm sure the Yankees didn't start the negotiation at $25m annually and if the Jays didn't go far in the discussions, I'm led to believe the length of contract had a lot to do with it.

FWIW your point is moot as the Dickey deal was contingent on resigning his deal -- AKA giving up long term assets for a FA contract signed by another team. The rest of your post is just rubbish so I'm not even sure where to start.
aselvana Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 i smell a rebound signing for an arm that we will regret come may.
FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Who's expensive? Buerhle, Reyes and Dickey are all at or below market value. Get a clue. Not when you consider the long-term damage to the farm system from those horrendous trades.

The Jays gave up assets for a player on a FA contract instead of just signing a FA. I'd understand if they got him at a discount in prospects or AAV but the Jays offered him more than the Mets and gave up their two best prospects in the system.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 ITT: *******s complain that we didn't pay $25M/year for a pitcher they've never seen. I wouldn't pay that much for Darvish. I would pay that much for Darvish. He's a legit ace just entering his prime.
awsomest Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Not when you consider the long-term damage to the farm system from those horrendous trades. ahhh relax they are blue jays prospects it's not like they would have panned out anyways.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Baseball is a joke man.... Then stop following it.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 If it were ever allowed, would a team like the Yankees be able to acquire a player like Jose Fernandez off the Marlins for something like 150M cash? No. If more than something like 1M changes hands, the commissioner's office has to approve it. The rule is in place specifically to prevent this sort of thing from happening, so there is zero chance they would let it occur.

There's no way Dickey fits the description. He still had 1 year left on his contract (which he played out last year), and we gave him an extension on top of that. Your argument was that we were paying to pick up players a year after we could have signed them on the FA market. Big difference.

Your argument was that we were paying to pick up players a year after we could have signed them on the FA market. Big difference. No, let me clarify. My point was that the Jays traded long-term assets for a bunch of guys on FA deals instead of just signing FA's. I can understand where you are coming from and why you are taking my post that way. However, I think Dickey is an important piece to the puzzle and didn't mean to exclude the NYM trade in my original post.
