Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 I hate MLS for it's North American league style. No other league incorporates playoffs, they have things like the League Cup, FA Cup, Coppa Italia, etc. which means that winning the league itself is an enormous accomplishment. No one cares who wins over the course of the long season here, it's all about success over a few games stretch where anyone can win. They play at the wrong time of year, too. I get it for other sports but it really bothers me in soccer for some reason. The quality of play in general in MLS is pretty awful from what I've watched the few times I've tried. Oh, and my favourite are the stupid team names, like Toronto FC SOCCER club, or Real Salt Lake which is a Spanish city for some reason. I bet the guy who named it didn't even know what "real" means, just that it sounds "soccery."

I get that it seems like they're forcing the Euro football culture a little bit.. doesn't seem overly natural. But it's still quality football and the league is improving drastically in terms of talent/stadiums/competitiveness. Can't f***ing wait to watch Defoe and Bradley this year.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Sounds like TFC is going to try everything it possibly can to re-sign Laba. There are also rumours about them bringing in a promising young centreback from Italy over the next week as well.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 To be honest I'll probably end up watching some of the games when I can and become a "bandwagon" fan. The fact that im not a soccer fan at all, dont follow any of the european leagues or the champions league and have still heard of Jermaine Defoe I think speaks volumes.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Rumors that apparently Ronaldinho expressed interest in coming to TFC but MLSE went with Defoe instead. Probably for the best even though he's one of the GOAT's.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Defoe is in his prime. I think this will work out better (I hope).
GD Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Argh, that sucks, Ronaldinho is one of my favorite players of all time. They did the right thing though
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Argh, that sucks, Ronaldinho is one of my favorite players of all time. They did the right thing though He's way past his prime and is a notorious party animal. It's the right move. He wouldn't make a huge impact anyways. He'd bring in a few more fans but wouldn't help them win.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Julio Cesar now..MLS going full beast mode
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Wow! TFC is going all-in here.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 This is insane. This guy is a legend. We're getting a (albeit past prime) world class keeper. The guy has 77 caps for the Brazilian National Team. lol Amazing
GD Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 The Dickey to our Johnson/Reyes, kinda. Love. It.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 Some speculation that this will only be until the transfer window opens up again in Europe. QPR needed to get rid of his contract for the remainder of the year and nobody in Europe could take it on right now. Hopefully it's a full year loan though. That's pretty awesome.

I assumed it was a full year, having your goalie just take off mid season would be pretty lame and not worth it imo. I still think were going to go out and get another big name corner midfielder or half back
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 I still can't believe Toronto FC just signed Julio Cesar. lol That's just f***ed.
Frag Verified Member Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 I still can't believe Toronto FC just signed Julio Cesar. lol That's just f***ed. The numbers seem to suggest that Cesar did pretty damn well last year. And once you adjust for the fact that the MLS is a weaker league, then you've got yourself one hell of a pickup.

Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 Report: TFC forward Dike tears his Achilles
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 21, 2014 Author Posted February 21, 2014 TFC lost their first exhibition game 3-1. 3 weeks till their first game
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 TFC lost their first exhibition game 3-1. 3 weeks till their first game Their defense still sucks. They're going to have to score a lot of goals this year to compete.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2014 Author Posted February 27, 2014 Jermain Defoe's start date with TFC is unclear. Defoe will miss his last game as a member of English Premier League team Tottenham with what is reported to be a hamstring injury.

eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Just sold my home opener tickets with a face value of $22 each for $135 each. 230 profit! Thanks Jermain Defoe!

I'm planning for this game to be my first full soccer game watched, not including the world cup/olympics. 100% bandwagon fan here.

No real reason to be anything but. MLS as a whole still sucks. Probably better than watching Serie A, though. My god Italian football is hard to watch.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2014 Author Posted March 14, 2014 How many people on this board will actually be watching the opener on satuday?
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Of course I'll be watching. Can't wait!

My god Italian football is hard to watch. MLS as a whole is not a great league. But the games are fun to go to live and TFC acquired some outstanding talent this year. Defoe has always been one of my faves so I'm super excited. Then you hear talk about other guys like Xavi or Drogba coming over... Even if they're past their primes... Can't really beat the value of seeing these legends for like 25-30 bucks on a Saturday afternoon. It's hard to get excited for a TFC/"Sporting" Kansas City game... but when the premier teams come to the town it should be fun.
