SAAviour Verified Member Posted December 21, 2013 Posted December 21, 2013 Should we start getting our hopes up that AA is waiting to pounce? What teams will go for him? Yankees- never count them out but might be at limit with luxury tax Phillies- could they replace the docs salary with tanaka? Red Sox- would need to make trade. Angels-can't afford it. Chicago teams- maybe the cubs? Mets- I could see them signing him with eye towards next year to pair with Harvey. Giants-can't afford it. Tigers- likely can't afford. Cardinals- no need to take the risk. Dodgers- do they have room in rotation? Rangers- likely done with Choo. Nationals- don't need him? Any other team that could even come close to affording him? Jays-definitely looking to add a starter............
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2013 Posted December 21, 2013 In the FA contest i had him going to the dodgers, but if i could change that I'm thinking the cubs are going to be all over him.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2013 Posted December 21, 2013 Reports seem to indicate that Tanaka wants to pitch on the west coast (although I'm sure he wouldn't turn down somewhere else if they made it worth his while). I have to believe Seattle and the Dodgers are the most likely, with the Yankees a wild card.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted December 21, 2013 Author Posted December 21, 2013 I think Seattle is spent.

This is funny, because they spent so much on Cano and will most likely finish 2nd last in the AL west.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2013 Posted December 21, 2013 I think Seattle is spent. I don't buy that. They're only at like 68M next year plus 3 1st year arbitration guys. The last two years they were 84M, and over 90 for several years before that. They get extra money this year just like everyone else. They won't spend it just for the sake of spending it (especially while in a sort-of rebuild), but you have to believe if they have a Tanaka (or Price) land in their lap for anything that isn't a drastic overpayment, they're going to jump on it.

I'm not sure that anything is going to be a huge splash. We have some options out there that we can either make a trade or could add another piece to it. I think that if we go for another large deal, that obviously is going to have to go above my head. And at this moment we are where we are, and we're trying to make things work with what we have." I guess they could sign him. If I'm Seattle though i have bigger holes to fill then starting pitching. They need another bat and a couple relievers.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted December 21, 2013 Posted December 21, 2013 I know this has been rehashed a few times but I am expected JZ and AA to hook for a trade later this off-season. Something like Janssen + Happ/Cecil + Lind for Franklin/Ackley and Paxton just makes too much sense IMO.
Brenner Verified Member Posted December 21, 2013 Posted December 21, 2013 Couldn't this be easily expanded to what teams are still in play for Santana/Garza/Jimenez/Tanaka?
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted December 21, 2013 Posted December 21, 2013 Or simply; "Who still needs pitching?"

DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted December 21, 2013 Posted December 21, 2013 That was the case last season for sure. I;ve been reading lots of rumblings that the SEA FO view him as more of a solid back-end guy now. Just IMO but the impression I have been given is that Felix, Iwakuma, Walker and Hultzen are all virtually untouchable where as the rest of the pitching depth is fair game.

Happ and Cecil are far from interchangeable parts and they really have no use for Lind and really no immediate need for Happ unless Paxton/Walker is traded. Paxton would be nice, but he won't come cheap and it's far from a sure thing that he would be a contributor in the rotation this year. Which is no big deal, I just don't think the front office is targeting that kind of starter. All things considered, I think some of the pieces of this trade are a real possibility, Jansen, Cecil, Ackley but it's just too big with Paxton and Lind included.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2013 Posted December 21, 2013 All reports said they think Mariners are at their cap. I still think they have a shot Tanaka Would be dumb since they are fine with pitching He'll probably go to one of the big 5.

I think it's a lot more likely that the Jays would look to get Franklin and Saunders. We have a big need in the OF next off-season, and Saunders would fit that nicely (the fact he's Canadian doesn't hurt either). Franklin / Ackley is obvious, but I get the impression that the Mariners would prefer to hold on to Ackley.

They aren't interchangeable which is why you let Seattle take the one they value more since both can be replaced internally. I'm also clearly not as high on Paxton as others around here.

I think the Mariners would rather sell high on Franklin than low on Ackley.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 Paxton will be really good. I sure hope so... he's a big part of my widely panned Justin Upton trade in the DDL

Tanaka-san isn't a option for Jays FO spending 105-120M and not having to give up any prospects is not the worst thing that could happen this off season. it's a crap shoot, but so is any trade you make and trades cost assets you never get back. you can make more money
Chappy Community Moderator Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 spending 105-120M and not having to give up any prospects is not the worst thing that could happen this off season. it's a crap shoot, but so is any trade you make and trades cost assets you never get back. you can make more money It's a calculated risk. Tanaka could be a valuable asset or he could be a disaster, no one really knows. He doesn't come with the same regard as Darvish, and even Darvish was a gamble. I have mixed feelings on Tanaka. I would like to see an effort to acquire him, but at the same time, I'm not opposed to dealing Sanchez for the right proven asset if we're saving $30-50M.

I want Tanaka-san
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 He's worth the gamble AA hasn't really spent a cent this off season and knows he can increase payroll if he wants/needs to. I suspect he is in on Tanaka (and probably Garza for less $) but worry he will make a stupid trade for Price or Shark if he doesn't get one of them.

Are your desires but your subconscious knows that Alex isn't in Tanaka-san. +100 millions is too much for Canada team.

But, why do you think AA would rather go after Shark then Garza/Tanaka who are better imo if there are no payroll constraints? I mean, you would think he would sign a FA pitcher since there are still several decent ones left, then use the trade chips he has for a 2b. Assuming we don't have a payroll limit for the moves.

I guess you could accuse me of being cynical, but I think if he pursues Tanaka/Garza, it'll be to provide an excuse for trading more prospects for another starter. I would take Tanaka because he's 25, but if they were to get Baker plus improve 2B and a platoon partner for Lind instead, I'd be fine with it.
