King Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Desmond on the verge of being traded?
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 So much for the A's real interest being Yunel.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 So much for the A's real interest being Yunel. That's what I was thinking. Thought it would be since Beane claimed him last year. Probably more so for this reason than a genuine want.
baseballsss Verified Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Doesn't have to be: C Ramos 1B Zimmerman 2B Escobar SS Desmond 3B Rendon LF Harper CF Span RF Werth is Desmond the better defensive SS?
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 I wonder if this sets up a Clippard / Navarro trade? I'm not sure how much it makes sense for the A's not to flip Clippard somewhere.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 What on earth is the thinking around here that Beane would like Navarro?
King Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 William LadsonVerified account@washingnats Tyler Clippard is involved in the deal. The deal is pending, I was informed.#Nats #Nationals #MLB
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 What on earth is the thinking around here that Beane would like Navarro? You have to figure Clippard is moving somewhere (I don't see him taking the closer role from Doolittle, and paying a setup man $8 mil or so for a small market team seems silly). A catcher on a short term deal would make some sense, since they can move Vogt around as needed (like the outfield now), and they may not be too eager to rely 100% on Phegley yet. I suspect Beane already has a good idea of where Clippard can be moved, or he wouldn't do the trade. Of course, he also traded for Johnson last year, so who knows.
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 What on earth is the thinking around here that Beane would like Navarro? I don't know, but the entire forum seems to think our $5 million replacement-level player has trade value.

Navarro is barely what one would call a catcher.

Well, he obviously does with dumn GMs like Stewart who don't know about framing/defense. But ya, with guys like Beane, no chance.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 He traded for Luke Gregerson too and just lost him. There's lots in Beane's recent history that would suggest he wants to keep Clippard. I'm holding out hope that the Diamondbacks cave and give up something good for Navarro. We may be best off keeping Navarro ourselves, provided he doesn't cause any drama. I'm not completely convinced that'll be the case though.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Ouch! Pretty telling about character, when you have an above average player on a good contract, who is apparently THAT toxic. Lazy player when he was with Jays. How many times did we blow up at his jogs down the 1B line on groundouts? And wasn't there one instance where on a groundout he walked down the 1B line? This is a case where the intangibles outweigh the tangibles.

BTS Community Moderator Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Makes no sense. Rays wouldn't value Escobar as a negative asset. Especially if he just returned a positive one. Yeah. Beane was able to land a near-elite reliever within less than a week. I don't buy that the Rays thought Escobar had negative value.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Yeah. Beane was able to land a near-elite reliever within less than a week. I don't buy that the Rays thought Escobar had negative value. Is Clippard really near-elite though? He has an xFIP the last 3 years of 4.14, 4.02, 3.28, and a career xFIP of 3.91. SIERA likes him a little more, but I'm still not sure I'd consider them to be THAT great. Add in to that the fact he'll get $8M+ in arbitration next year (I think MLBTR predicts over $9M)...

He's better than his xFIP. Guy induces more infield flies than Chris Young.

I'm just not sure I'd consider him near elite. He's good, and I'd love to have him, but not as good as people are making him out to be imo.
