Cameron writes that Smith will be worth the money and is a good player... yet they'd be better off trading him for a marginal prospect since they're not going to win anyway.

 

I just don't understand this approach. Not every team should go full-Astros. My favourite team-building model is the White Sox/Brewers one. Never rebuild, just keep trying to get better. Every few years you'll chance your way into 90 wins. People couldn't wrap their heads around the Abreu and Garza signings. Well, Garza has been a key cog for a first-place team and Abreu is a great building block on a respectable squad.

 

Smith deal was a nice deal. Extend the contract to a DH in a national league team is an excellent idea. Minaya is great.
