this Houston team is gonna be good. Singleton just hit an single up the middle to go up 6-4 against the tigers. It was against a lefty, a bit high

 

It's what happens when you tank a couple of years, dump a couple of vets, and build up properly. Although, they still will need to add FAs, but if they were able to get payroll to 100m+ with the core they have, they would be a serious threat. They have a bunch of good building blocks with nice contracts for the next 5 years. Kind of wish the Jays did that, then went crazy with the payroll, but never going to happen, and that's why the Jays will likely not win much in the foreseeable future. Until a competent GM comes along and is able to build a winner.

Astros fans don't agree. In fact, their ownership is very much hated in Houston. Plus, the Astros will NEVER contend in the AL West, as the Angels, A's, Mariners and Rangers are far superior to the Astros. And their spending is on hold until they get a TV deal (their TV deal is losing money because of Comcast Sportsnet Houston's bankruptcy).

 

With the Astros' financial issues, it's unlikely they will get to $100M in payroll anytime soon. Most fans have abandoned the Astros due to their anger at Jim Crane.

 

And the Jays had to make those moves. Besides, most of those pieces traded have yet to pan out in the majors.

Jays at least still own 1st place. Not so for the Giants.. thanks to today's loss, the Giants are tied with the Dodgers. As a result, there is now a clusterf*** in the NL Wild Card due to the Cardinals loss to the Dodgers:

Giants +2.5 (tied in NL West)

2nd wild card

Reds -- (3 way tie)

At the rate David Huff is pitching tonight, New York is going to have trouble tomorrow if David Phelps struggles vs. Tampa, who will have Chris Archer pitching.

 

The Rays are salivating at the possibility of facing a worn-down Yanks bullpen and not facing Tanaka, looking to help the Jays out (although Baltimore is facing Texas.. but the Rangers are still dangerous.)

Sox beat the yanks. in spite of our losing ways we still aren't any worse off cause the Yanks and O,s are just as bad.

Mookie Betts also made a great throw to almost nail a guy at 2nd on an automatic double, and showed a nice swing, and a great approach in singling and drawing a walk (laying off an outside fastball with 2 strikes that a nervous overmatched rookie would typically flail at). And while he got thrown out in his first SB attempt, he showed smart baserunning instincts, and is flashing a crazy large lead that appears to play with the mind of the pitcher. The Sox will gladly take the occasional bad route on a ball from a guy who has barely played the position while he gets used to being a MLB OF.

 

In the uber-small sample - a guy in his first MLB game, playing in Yankee Stadium - you have to be happy with what you're seeing in the kid.

I know. It's annoying me as well. They've finally gotten old, they're injured, s*****, don't hit, bad run differential...and they're still hanging around.

Yup... it's the same s*** over and over. After 91 pitches opponents are OPS'ing 1.076, and 1.033 after 106.

 

He always gets flustered in later innings. And never picks up his defense if they make an error.

 

This may sound dumb but if Gibbons pulled him after 90 pitches he'd prob be 10-0.

He still eats innings, bad or otherwise. That's what a inning eater is. Put your bias aside and look at what he'll do. Go over 200 innings again. May not be worth Thor and the best catching prospect jays have ever had but it will be worth his contract.

I fully expect R.A Dickey to go on a better run in the second half. Lower his home run rate a bit, his walks and be anchor with the younger guys struggle a bit.
