BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 The team options can (and would) be picked up by the teams trading for them. You trade the contract, options and all. Thanks. Although both were risks AA took after one big year each these deals are shockingly good given the consistent production to date since, even with Jose's injuries etc. Especially when you look at some of boat anchor long term deals out there. The team options for 2016 are so valuable for those assets.

GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Yes it sure does now Cabrera better than we'd even hoped, and Bautista is full on beast again And its an optimal time to try and move these guys, instead of hoping 30+ year old players are gonna magically keep getting better.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 And its an optimal time to try and move these guys, instead of hoping 30+ year old players are gonna magically keep getting better. Normally, I'd probably agree with you, but with this division this year, the playoffs aren't actually impossible... However, If we're out of it by the deadline, I'd be firesaleing the f*** outta this bitch.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Jays are in contention and Bautista is a fringe MVP candidate on a cheap contract. Trading him would have ruined this season, especially if it was for Profar ( King's suggestion ). And the following few years when you'd have Profar cheap and 14m to spend?

I'd consider moving Melky to the Sox for something around Betts or one of the plethora of SP kids they have.

GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 EE is part of the culture of this team that AA has and should be building around...I believe some time ago he mentioned could see EE/JB with jays into their late 30's, like Ortiz with the Red Sox...when we think the jays, we think of JB, EE...these guys want to win for this team, this city, especially since this is the team where it clicked for them & they got a real shot... assuming they remain competitive, you continue to keep and build around the core of JB, EE, BL, hopefully Melk sticks around, maybe JR presuming he doesn't decline too much (I still think we have yet to see the best of JR), some of the late inning guys in the pen including CJ... Holy f***!!!!!! So what you're advocating for is exactly why the Jays made the big push in the 2012/2013 off season. The Jays FO saw the Yankees & Sox as being old, with bloated payrolls. So now the Jays who have significantly less financial resources should be doing the same thing? You must be pounding the powdered methadone because crack ain't cutting it with that idea.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 The motherload you could get for Buerhle, Bautista and EE is tantalizing but yeah... Not just yet. Your thoughts on moving Cabrera?
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Your thoughts on moving Cabrera? If they're in it may as well hang on to him and go for the comp pick. Obviously, if someone wanted to offer you something stupid (like the SF - NYM Wheeler trade) then pull the trigger.

You are probably right but it would be politically impossible to make those moves. After watching Snider, Drabek fail... Lawrie, Gose dissapoint (compared to expectations) most of the posters here are to young to remember the days when the opposite happened, when prospects suceeded. Almost every prospect met expectations eventually (20 year stretch going from the days of Moseby, to Olerud, to Green, Delgado, to watching Halladay and Carpenter (for another team) put it together). Blowing it up completely would bring a huge haul of prospects. Enough to cancel out the luck factor (some will fail some will be stars). Good luck convincing others. Nice to see you on the record. I know you have been right before. If things go to hell in a year from now, when everybody is wining about the state of the franchise you can bump your comment.

There were some flops in there too. Eddie Zosky, Josh Phelps, Steve Karsay come to mind right off the top of my head but you're right that overall the farm was pretty successful.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 22, 2014 Author Posted May 22, 2014 Your thoughts on moving Cabrera? Team seems good enough to try and keep one of Rasmus or Cabrera. And I'd rather extend Cabrera for 2-3 years, something I think AA could probably get done.

But hanging on to these players until they retire will kill any chance the Jays have to contend in the future. Good luck convincing others. Nice to see you on the record. I'm not looking to convince others and I usually don't bump my past ideas.

And just say, the Jays traded Bautista for Profar and Profar flopped. The Jays would still have the 14m in payroll flexibility with Jose gone. Sure you wouldn't be able to recoup the value Bautista would've given the Jays, but you could still sign a pretty decent player with that money to make up some difference.

Eddie Zosky, Josh Phelps, Steve Karsay come to mind right off the top of my head but you're right that overall the farm was pretty successful. There were definately dissapointments... There are always failures. The first crop to mature under Riccairdi was the first dissapointing crop in my lifetime. Phelps, Hinske, Wells, Hudson, Lopez, Rios. At the end of 2002 I thought things looked great, at the end of 2003 I thought they looked really great (Phelps and Hinske's down 2003 was just a bump in the road). What little did I know. And this crop was up and down. Wells, Hinske, Rios even Lopez eventually all produced complete decent seasons. The Lawrie, Snider, Thames, Gose, Drabek, Arencibia, Hutch, etc. crop is the worst I've seen in terms of young players maturing as expected. I actually blame anyone for this. I think there is luck involved. Just because you had a bad crop doesn't mean you give up on the system. Re-invest in young players, things will work out better next time.

I really like what Gose is bringing to the team and would have no problem at all with letting Rasmus walk.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 22, 2014 Author Posted May 22, 2014 Melky loves it here...I think he would sign for a discount to stay here And I think you have a better chance of him taking 2-3 years, while Colby will expect more.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Melky loves it here...I think he would sign for a discount to stay here The way the AL East is playing out I see this team close enough that they won't blow it up however if they do fall out of it recouping value on some of these guys like Rasmus ,Melky etc is just common sense. We need to hope that Rasmus comes back from this DL stint and just rakes so he can be moved even if the team is in it or so good that a QO won't bother teams in free agency. Resigning him long term would be stupid but with Rogers tightening up the payroll it is a moot point as there won't be any money.
shortstop Verified Member Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Gose as #9, premier defence, bunting/taking walks, speed...he's making the case to be the starter in 2015

That's a great contribution from your no.9 hitter, though of course we'd all love to get some Rasmus-type production. Will be interesting to see in 2-3 years if Pompey will make a splash (or even still be on this club)
