That contract wasn't crippling or anything when it was signed.... but the Phillies had SO many holes at the time (still do). It was just ridiculous to see them commit so many years/dollars to a freaking closer.

Phillies Shopping Jonathan Papelbon

By Steve Adams [December 6, 2013 at 2:47pm CST]

The Phillies are trying to trade Jonathan Papelbon, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). The Phillies could move the right-hander, who is set to earn $13MM in each of the next two seasons, and look to sign a more affordable closer, Rosenthal adds in a second tweet. Papelbon's deal also has a $13MM vesting option for the 2016 season that triggers if he finishes 55 games in 2015 or 100 games between 2014-15. Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly adds (via Rosenthal) that Papelbon's no-trade protection allows him to select 12 teams to which he will approve a deal.

Papelbon, 33, saved 29 games and posted a 2.92 ERA with 8.3 K/9 and 1.6 BB/9 in 61 2/3 innings for the Phillies in 2013 -- the second season of a four-year, $50MM deal. Though his superficial numbers appear strong, Papelbon's average fastball velocity dropped to a career-low 92 mph, and his 10.6 percent swinging-strike rate was also the lowest of his career.

Papelbon's name surfaced in trade rumors over the summer, as he was believed by some to be available with the Phillies looking to shed payroll and get younger. Papelbon made some incendiary remarks about the direction of the Phillies in July, flatly stating, "I definitely didn't come here for this." Asked about the contract in retrospect, GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said in August that he would make the signing again and had no regrets other than they way the team has played as a whole. In an interview later that month, Amaro called Papelbon "crucial" to the Phillies' success and said he expected to see Papelbon closing out games for the Phils in 2014.

Lol @ trying to trade that overpaid, declining, douchebag piece of s***. I could see a poorly run franchise like the Angels taking him.

The Dodgers, they're trying to corner the market on them I think.

Three way deal:

Angels get Papelpon + Cash or Prospect

Jays get Kendrick

Phillies get Janssen

The cash or prospect is from Philly.

Angels are dumb but I don't think they're that dumb. I don't think the Phillies take that out of pure preference either. Doesn't seem realistic imo.

If there were going to look at something like that, the Angels and Jays would probably just cut out the unnecessary team (Phillies) and deal directly.

True, but then we'd probably have to add the prospect to make the deal happen. Even though I'd value Janssen>Pappelbon and his contract my guess is the Angels would prefer Pappelbon based on his closer rep as long as they get some cash to offset the difference between him and Kendrick.

Oddly I just think if you offered them Pappelbon + Cash or Janssen for Kendrick they'd chose Pappelbon + Cash, even though with Janssen they'd save money and get the same performance.

Tigers have made some bad moves

Is Nathan better then papelbon?

Trading fister to make salary room

How Amaro expects to move pigf***er McGee, and get anything back without paying a significant chunk of that ridiculous contract, in a closer rich free agent market is beyond me.

Agreed, really poor decision. Trading Fister to free money to overpay an old closer is just silly. Tigres have 1-2 years to try win before MCab falls apart. I liked the Fielder trade, use those savings to resign Max. Keep Fister and trade some prospects for a cheaper closer option (Janssen) or sign 2 of these high profile setup guys and let them compete to close.

I could see a possible deal with the yankees for one of their extra OF.

Wells/ichiro/Gardner to Philly for Papelpon

-Philly gets needed outfield depth and yankees get a proven closer to replace Rivera. Both teams exchange bad contracts

(if the trade is one of wells/ichiro)

Wells for Papplebon is like trading nothing for a good reliever for the Yanks. Phillies are retarded if they offer this though

Just one year left on Wells...that contract seemed like an eternity at one time.

How much of 2014 are Angels and Yankees each paying?

Anyone want him for DH platoon on a 1 year deal for 2015? Most likely he retires but...

According to COt's Contracts, Angels are paying 18.6 million of Wells salary this year, Yankees 2.4

Papelbon is making a lot of money which is a deterrent though he's still a very good closer and has one of the best track records over this past decade. I'm sure a team like the Angels, or even the Yankees would trade for him based on those very own reasons.

Toronto - $3,642.857 (signing bonus)

Angels - $18,600,000

NYY - $2,400,000

Yankees are also getting $14M from the Cubs for Soriano.
