Another player who has yet to see a full slate of bidders, according to Olney, is another Boston free agent: shortstop Stephen Drew. Olney says that he believes Drew's decision to reject the club's $14.1MM qualifying offer was a mistake. He reasons that it is looking worse by the day, with the Cardinals now out of the market and the Mets seemingly hesitant to give up a pick to sign him at that level of value.

I wonder if we could get him for 1 yr @ 10 mil for second base?

Drew is great player but he's kind of wasted on a team that's looking for a 2B not a SS. Still, given that he would only cost a 2nd round pick, he could be a steal. The price would probably have to be even less than 10M though. He's worth that muhc in a vaccuum but there should be more affordable options for 2B.

Meh

Not sure if he is worth it

Not much of an upgrade bits and pieces player really

With the QO driving his price down, monetarily he would probably provide decent value. No way I'd punt a second round pick to get him though.

Giving up our second round pick shouldn't stop us from signing anyone this offseason. Who was the last player that we drafted in the second round that actually turned into anything?

Punting draft picks is for signing elite talent, not average or slightly tiny-bit above average players like Drew.

Hollon, DeJong, Norris, Gabryszwiski,Murphy, Sweeney, Nicolino, Eliopoulos (RIP) were our last 2nd round picks since 2009

Some decent prospects on that list. Really encouraged by Hollon

That kinda sucks. I was curious if there were any worse teams with draft picks in the 2nd round then the Blue Jays. So far I only found the Yankees, their last player drafted in the 2nd round to produce more then 1WAR was back in 1984.

Blue Jays second-round picks by rWAR:

Not a great list. I'm fine giving up a pick, but don't think Drew is a great fit to begin with.

What past front offices did is completely irrelevant to what the current regime should do. That being said, AA seems like the type of GM who's just going to turn this organization into one giant s*** show( moreso than it is now)

I agree. I don't want Drew either. We already have enough injury prone infielders. I want Omar Infante.

The upside to that, he won't have to be afraid of Rasmus diving into him if he's with us.

I don't for the life of me understand Drew's logic in declining the QC (unless he really didn't like playing in Boston, hard to believe).

He won't come close to the AAV he would with the QC and he has an injury history that would scare clubs off offering him many years anyway. I could totally see him signing back with Boston for considerably less than his QC Salary would have been. His FA stock is hurt big-time by the a QC for every club but the Bo-Sox. I have a feeling they are going to have big leverage over him.

Last word I heard was he really wanted to stay in Boston but that is what they all say . Boras is his agent so naturally he thinks he can get a multi year deal in that 14 mil range . Looking at Peralta,s contract you would think he could but that draft pick in a strong draft year is going to stick hard to him .

I look at the Mets being his one option but he is going to get burned financially which is fine by me . The more Boras,s clients get burned the more I like it .

Meh Pretty much resigned myself to the fact Goins and Izzy will play second .

Kelly Johnson, super sub.......:P

I would be fine with Johnson but the more I hear AA speak the more I think it will be Goins . If He plays GG type defense and his OBP is 320 ish then fine . I just don't think that happens

Since I grew up in Saskatchewan I had one of those few great football weekends . Took time off from hunting to watch my Riders pound Hamilton . Now all I got is WTF does Alex do to make this team better without gutting the minors .

I'll admit I got real negative once Ruiz signed . He was My # 1 target . I just felt he would add more than the 2 wins by his game calling skills . So did the Phillies obviously . We can't win with JPA no matter if we gut the minors for pitching . Adding a Fasano to the coaching staff doesn't fix his bat or his lack of pitch calling abilities .

Is Boras still his agent? If so end of conversation.

Yeah basically. Not only because the Jays don't deal with him but also because Boras doesn't cave. If no one want to meet his demands initially, he'll wait and wait until the last minute for a team to cave and more times than not, one does. It only takes one after all.
