I knew it wouldn't be long until someone pulled up on the Halladay bandwagon lol. I am sorry I love the guy but I am pretty sure he could be done. But if anyone can make the adjustments to his big decrease in velocity it would be Doc.

If Doc came it at JA Happ type of money or less then I'd consider rolling the dice and then flipping Happ as a payroll dump. That being said if Halladay is the best we can do then what's the point.

Sorry for bringing it up.. And I agree, he could be done, but he could also come back averaging 90 on the gun in the spring. Halladay was always one of the hardest workers, and he's smart with knowing how to pitch. It's a great buy low, someone will take the low risk with a chance at high reward. I just wish we were one of the teams that took a chance on these types of signings, when was the last time we tried it?

Bartolo Colon was s*** for 5 straight years and has came back. Maybe Halladay should look into those plasma injections..

Steamers has Doc down for 2.2 WAR, similar to a bunch of other starters. I have zero idea how/if that system accounts for health btw.

I'd prefer someone like Porcello for the 5th spot, but Halladay would have the advantage of selling lots of season tickets and creating some more buzz around the casuals which is also important. Sign him soon, put him on the Delabar program, and see what happens. I bet in terms of ticket sales he provides huge surplus value, even if he doesn't on the field.

I agree with just one sign that is really uncharacteristic of him is his 5BB/9. He will get a look from some team who is looking for a bargain. One thing I think I heard was he was wanting to go to a team that could be a contender however he might not want to be so picky. I hope whoever he plays for he figures it out and can produce a little bit.

I like how people are discussing the 5th spot when this team only has two starters

Ya, that was an ugly walk rate. But something wasn't right with him from the beginning on the season. I figure he'll be closer to his 2012 rate.

I hope so even if it is not with us. He is as classy as you get in this game and he deserves to go out as a solid pitcher and not in a heap of flames.

Ubaldo has made more than 30 starts in each of his last 6 seasons.

Morrow has never made more than 30 starts in a season.

Morrow also has an injury issue which he's trying to rehab rather than undergo surgery to fix (and he even got the Toronto-kiss-of-death "he's recovering nicely and throwing easy" just recently).

Morrow isn't even a legitimate option right now ... he's in the Drabek and Hutchison camp of "we hope they can contribute, but let's act as if they won't." Ubaldo is a legitimate option (though he's not optimal).

Cubital tunnel issues rarely require surgery to fix. They're really not that big of a deal. It's nowhere near the level of needing TJ Surgery.

I see a lot of people that have ideas on approaching the off-season. Well then why not join our very own MLB Mock Offseason and make those moves yourself!? You can run your own team, sign free agents yourself, and make your own trades with your fellow TBJMB posters! If you have any interest, post here in the dedicated thread:

Hey guys, I'm new to the board. Since my Miami Dolphins continue to depress me I'm moving over to baseball to consumer my mind for a bit...the idea of this thread is to see what everyone would like to do realistically to make this team a contender this season. I have a couple scenarios here and my final result will be based on what I think is believable and what I think works best for this team with a slight bump in salary.

I'll start with what my approach would be:

Needs

SP: Need a front of rotation guy, or two middle rotation guys.

C: JPA, all that needs to be said. Upgrade on Thole would make sense too...

2B: I like Goins, but an upgrade would certainly be a smart route

Trades

Deal a package of relievers and another piece for SP Rick Porcello. Tigers need relievers and I think they're a good trade partner. A deal for Shark also makes sense depending on the package (no Sanchez).

DET receives: Delabar, Cecil and Esmil Rogers.

TOR receives: Rick Porcello

Dealing Bautista, Lind or even Rasmus makes sense. I'd air on the side of dealing Lind mostly to save us some money to make moves. Ideally we'd get a good defensive catcher back.

A guy I would target is Ryan Hannigan from the Reds, just not sure of the package needed so I'll leave it out. Maybe JPA, Izturis for him. Need upgrades in utility infielders and would give them some depth if they move Phillips.

Sign

SP Ubaldo Jimenez for 4 years at 64 million.

He's my favorite pitcher on the market and has the highest upside. Could slot him right into the middle of the rotation.

C Dioner Navarro for 2 years a 10 million

Had a nice year with the Cubs. All we need is a replacement level guy.

C George Kottaras

Was DFA'd and at the very least could replace Thole. A good canadian kid who gets on base at a very nice clip and caught Wakefield early in his career.

Other options

SP Plan B: SP Ricky Nolasco for 4 years at 50 million.

A safe addition who will give us innings and can be slotted into the middle of the rotation. I'd be fine with either him or Ubaldo on the Jays come spring training.

2B Omar Infante for 3 years at 25 million.

I don't think this is as realistic. I'm fine with a platoon of Goins and Maicer, but if we have the money why not add a .300 hitter. I'm going to leave this out tho, because I don't see it happening.

Would also like to add an end of bench bat, a veteran guy who's been around but is a hair above what Derosa was (Betemit, Bloomquist?)

Lets assume those contracts in are fine, and we keep Lind.

2014 Projected Lineup

1. Jose Reyes, SS

2. Colby Rasmus, CF

3. Jose Bautista, RF

4. Edwin Encarnacion, 1B

5. Adam Lind, DH

6. Brett Lawrie, 3B

7. Melky Cabrera, LF

8. Dioner Navarro, C

9. Maicer Izturis 2B

Bench

C George Kottaras

INF Ryan Goins

OF Anthony Gose

OF Moises Sierra

Starting Rotation

1. R.A. Dickey

2. Ubaldo Jimenez

3. Mark Beurhle

4. Brandon Morrow

5. Rick Porcello

Relievers

LR: J.A. Happ

MR: Aaron Loup

MR: Jeremy Jeffress

MR: Luis Perez

SU: Dustin McGowan

SU: Sergio Santos

CP: Casey Janssen

So what would everyone think of that team going into spring training? Do you think it's realistic? Can you do better and keep it plausible? Discuss!

Welcome to the board! Nice first post.

Will say i wouldn't hate it if that's how our off season went.

We absolutely need to sign at least 1 free agent starter. I prefer Kazmir or Colon. We should also trade for 1 starter without giving up Sanchez or Stroman. Samardiza i feel we could get around a package of 1. Hutch or Drabek 2. Loup or Delebar and then a couple prospects with some upside - DJ Davis, Sean Nolin and maybe Daniel Norris. We absolutely need to address catcher as you mentioned. I feel like Ryan Hanigan is an obvious solution - nice buy low that should rebound from a tough year but at worst is a huge defence upgrade. I think Mark Ellis at second base doesn't get enough attention around here, ideal fit IMO.

You basically addressed all the major needs besides second base. Looking forward to talking baseball with you.

Someone should have told my surgeon that. He didn't get the memo.

Doesn't mean every case needs it, I've had it, no problems with a little physical therapy and stretches. Of course pitching with the problem would obviously be next to impossible even with a mild case, but surgery doesn't always have to be a default option if the case isn't severe enough.

Do pitchers numbers improve visibly when they leave Coors Field? I was looking at Jhoulys Chacin and wondering if a trade for him could benefit us, at least in the 4-5 spot? Rockies need BP and a bat (And a 1B). Lind and Cecil?

Their "baseball card" numbers should improve. Lind and Cecil wouldn't get us Chacin though. Here's a link to his home/away career numbers:
