Wow, more than I expected although if you count framing, he's probably more than worth it from a $/WAR perspective. If money wasn't so tight, I wouldn't mind the Jays paying that at all but as it is, there's only so much money and a lot of items on the grocery list.

Yeah, I was thinking more like 2/16. He's probably worth it, but still... I wonder what this will do to inflate what McCann gets?

Ruiz would be great at 2/20. Going up to 2/25 wouldn't be bad as well. Probably will net us at least 4 additional wins over JP

There must be a statistical relationship for catchers ERA that could adjust WAR for catchers. I think a good catcher is invaluable.

Worth it? Probably. But I didn't think he'd get that much either.

That's probably pretty close to the whole free agent budget. It's still worth it in my opinion because it's ridiculous to try and rebuild the rotation one year after rebuilding the rotation. The money to do that has been spent, it was spent last year. There's not enough money left over to do it again. The Jays need to make sure they get the most out of whatever pitching they have before they chase more pitching. Unfortunately, AA's plan seems to be the opposite. He always says the first priority is starting pitching when he should be saying run prevention.

The game is flush with cash. It's also possible that after seeing what the Rays did with Bengie Molina that front offices are catching up to the realities of catcher values.

Being uber pessimistic about the team seems to be the 'in' thing on the board right now. We're not in a great spot by any means, but its not an end of the world type situation.

This site is becoming a joke with the doom and gloomers. Reminds me of a lot of stock traders in 2009. Toronto is a great sports market we have better chances to create a good team then the majority of teams. We have budget space, a good nucleus, and very little long term bad contracts ( Buehrle and perhaps Reyes qualifies but we needed him ).

You can speculate on who will give it to him here: http://www.bluejaysmessageboard.com/threads/1676-Blue-Jays-Message-Board-Free-Agent-Prediction-Contest

On Ruiz... I'd probably give him 2/30 if a gun was put to my head. He's a better bet than anyone else we could bring in.

15M a year for Carlos Ruiz is a little steep.

Posted
We're at about $138 million right now without adding anyone, and were at 120 last year.

We must pray for a bulldog to bite Buehrle, he die and we'll save about 18 million on the payroll.

Talked about Ruiz on Xm. Said that his agent thinks he will get a three year contract, and said that Colorado was going hard after him. Didn't really talk about $, except some guesses.

Wrong. We can go up to the luxury tax if the right guys are willing. Team has a good fan base, the owner is rich and profits if the TV content improves ( a winning Jays team would do that ). I can't get over how people on here seriously think the Jays have no money. And we can reduce our current payroll after next season EASILY if plans change.

Ruiz is sixth in WAR among catchers over the past five seasons, hitting .288/.371/.434. And he supposedly has all the catcher intangibles.

I'd project him for 5 WAR over the next two years. $30M for that is a bargain in today's environment, especially when you consider the disadvantage the Blue Jays have in attracting free agents. I'm not sure why people don't see him as a well-above-average option.

He's 35 coming off a down year and only put up 5 WAR once! That's a pretty ballsy statement to project those types of numbers!

McCown said yesterday on PTS, that he has been told that the Jays payroll for this year will be $150 million. FWIW

I'm thinking he was saying 5 WAR total over 2 years. Or paying $6m per WAR

You can't tell me that Rogers didn't look at the increase in TV ratings, attendance etc. last year, and see what just having a hope of winning does for the bottom line. They are not stupid.

Well Id throw the whole budget at either him or McCaan just so we never have to watch JP in a Jays uniform ever again
