TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 now I can rant on two threads. Things that could be done with MDR...minor league deal, coaching staff offer, broadcast offer, season ticket holder...anything but giving him a spot in the lineup.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 If it makes you feel better Hurl. DeRoza is still considering retirement. The fact that hes waited this long makes me think hes leaning towards retirement. If I was him I wouldn't play for 750k next year. AA can convince him out of it still like he did last year.
DH12 Verified Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 so tired of Buck and tabby talking about "if Jays ever get to a pennant race, the fans will go crazy". With AA in charge and Gibbons as manager it simply is not going to happen in this division.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Teams would have overpaid out the ass for Janssen, Cecil, and Delabar I didn't pay too much attention during the trading deadline, were there any overpays for relievers like the 3 you're mentioning?

From what I remember, the few decent relievers that did change hands did so for next to nothing in return.

Ok, thanks, I guess it's just more frustration from fans, it's normal. We'll see what happens this off season, I hope the F/O goes back to getting guys like Escobar, Morrow and Rasmus to plug the holes. Interestingly, if I'm not mistaken, these guys were acquired in exchange for relievers to some extent at least.
Ehh Verified Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Teams would have overpaid out the ass for Janssen, Cecil, and Delabar No they wouldn't. And they didn't.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 two relievers got Ian Kennedy....if you ignore the B comp pick that went in the deal too. Rzep had an 8.00 ERA and got a nice little 20 year old defensive SS. Houston got a couple interesting young players for Veras but agreed there wasn't much of a market this year but then again our relievers were a lot better than Veras.

Kyle Smith to the Houston for platoon guy Maxwell. Avisail Garcia for Iglesias?

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 Indeed they were mate! Ahh shut yer hole, ya bike!!
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 Nothing like commiting a 25-man spot to a guy with a replacement-level ceiling in the opening weeks of the offseason. How anyone can have faith in this front office is beyond me. Well, that about sums up the upcoming off-season. Probably time to cheer for those Rays.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 I have no clue why DeRosa is being brought back and guaranteed a roster spot. This is absurd.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 I have no clue why DeRosa is being brought back and guaranteed a roster spot. This is absurd. He can fill two roles (platoon partner for Lind and backup infielder) for not a lot of money and he's already under control. AA's comments make it sound like he's really going to focus on pitching. Looks like he's going to use as much of his available money as possible to land a pitcher and go cheap everywhere else. I won't be surprised if Goins starts.
kcjaysfan Verified Member Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 Combine DeRosa's numbers against lefties, and Lind's numbers against righties this year, and you get a .298/.380/.514 line over 576 plate appearances.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 and if MDR returns to the 83 wRC+ that he put up against lefties in 2012? Honestly he put up a 14% BB rate with 15% HR/FB rate...he's not going to repeat either of those stats IMO. People have to stop seeing the 25th man as a throw away spot...MDR got 230 PA's out of that spot this year. He also had his best hitting year since 2008 and was still only replacement level, yes I believe that if he only faces lefties he'll put up a better slash line than his current, but I could say the same about almost every right-handed hitter in baseball. Take a look at some of the 3B's that had better than or similar wRC+ as DeRosa against lefties (with 50 PA's) Chris Johnson Josh Satin Ed Lucas Trevor Plouffe Cody Ranson Juan Uribe Throw in SS Jordy Mercer and 2B's Kevin Frandsen & Tony Abreu...1B's Baker, Gaby Sanchez, Blanks and Frieman. I will state it again...there will be minor league deals available for guys with better defense than MDR who can hit lefties just as well as MDR did in his best season in 5 years.

kcjaysfan Verified Member Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 I don't want him as the 25th man. And, honestly, I have no expectation for him to be as good against lefties as he was this year. I think I'm just trying to tell myself it's not going to be so bad since AA is likely to keep him around next season.

It looks like AA is going to got with the same flawed approach of bringing in stars and not patching up holes. I expect all the extra money will go to a name pitcher and the lineup will be mostly unchanged with Goins at 2B, Melky in LF, Lind/Derosa at DH and JPA at catcher.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Melky in LF & JPA catching = Season over. I could be wrong and hopefully I am but that's my prediction.
kcjaysfan Verified Member Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 It's incredibly hard to predict what we'll have with Melky. There is such a huge swing in what is possible. The tumor could have been the whole problem this season, and next season we'll get a player more like he was in 2011. Or, he could really just be an old fat ass with stubby legs who can't hit without PEDs.
Convo Verified Member Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Or, he could really just be an old fat ass with stubby legs who can't hit without PEDs. This.
kcjaysfan Verified Member Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 This. We shall see, won't we?
TheHurl Site Manager Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Does anyone actually believe that Melky in LF means zero chance of winning?
Convo Verified Member Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Does anyone actually believe that Melky in LF means zero chance of winning? Never said that. Said JPA and Melky = Slim chance. Does anyone actually think Melky can be an average player without PEDs?
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Never said that. Said JPA and Melky = Slim chance. Does anyone actually think Melky can be an average player without PEDs? If he stays healthy, I think he'll be above average.
